Grumpy Cat Wins Top Honors at Internet Cat Video Festival

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

The second Internet Cat Video Festival was held this week at the Minnesota State Fair, and a good time was had by all. The highlight of the event was the meeting between Lil Bub and Grumpy Cat. The top honor of the festival, the Golden Kitty Award, was bestowed on Tard, also known as Grumpy Cat. Last year's winner was Henri, le Chat Noir.

Elsewhere at the festival, seven “celebricats” were inducted into a “Hall of Fame”: Keyboard Cat, Nyan Cat, Henri Le Chat Noir, Kittens Inspired by Kittens, Maru, Boots and Cats, and Lil Bub, a toothless litter runt whose documentary aired at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the more than 10,000 fans who turned out seemed more excited to be there than the cats. Some held up cat masquerade masks on sticks, while others painted their faces to look like jungle cats – and even Grumpy Cat. One woman wore a leopard print tunic and cat ear headband, while another sported white leggings with rainbow-colored cat faces. According to the Star Tribune‘s live blog, there were cardboard cutouts of cats everywhere, Grumpy Cat crop art, and people dressed in cat onesies.

A Professional Artist Collaborates with Her 4-Year Old Daughter

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

One day, Mica Angela Hendricks, a professional illustrator, bought a new sketchbook. Her 4-year old daughter liked it and added her own contributions. Soon the two were working together, each, Ms. Hendricks insists, adding essential elements:

Sometimes I would give her suggestions, like “maybe she could have a dragon body!”  but usually she would ignore theses suggestions if it didn’t fit in with what she already had in mind.  But since I am a grownup and a little bit (okay a lot) of a perfectionist, I sometimes would have a specific idea in mind as I doodled my heads.  Maybe she could make this into a bug!  I’d think happily to myself as I sketched, imagining the possibilities of what it could look like.  So later, when she’d doodle some crazy shape that seemed to go in some surrealistic direction, or put a large circle around the creature and filled the WHOLE THING in with marker, part of my brain would think, What is she DOING?!?  She’s just scribbling it all up!  But I should know that in most instances, kids’ imaginations way outweigh a grownup’s, and it always ALWAYS looked better that what I had imagined.  ALWAYS.

For Once in My Life Bass Line

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 12:00 AM PDT

(YouTube Link)

James Jamerson was one of the most influential bass players in American pop music. He played on many of Motown biggest hits, usually uncredited. In this video, his recreated bass line from Stevie Wonder's "For Once in My Life" is examined visually.

Wonder’s version of the track is often singled out by bassists as the greatest example of James Jamerson’s playing style, with no two bars of music played alike during the whole song; a completely improvisational line that is both melodic and complementary to Wonder’s vocal.

Hearing it to enjoy it; but seeing it is to be really impressed. Link -via Metafilter

Librarianship: The Role-Playing Game

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

Tumblr user Yitzus came across this amazing find:

LOOK WHAT I FOUND! A TABLETOP LIBRARIAN GAME! WHO NEEDS DUNGEONS AND/OR DRAGONS WHEN YOU COULD BE FILLING OUT BUDGET SHEETS, DEALING WITH DRUNKEN PATRONS, AND FILING FOR GOVERNMENT AID!

What is this thing? Well, I logged into the library database WorldCat and did a search. This is a game published by the consulting firm Harwell Associates in 1977. It's designed to simulate the experience of a library director.

It's fun! I'm already a third-level cataloger/mage. The encumbrance rules are a pain, but we are talking about 70s-era data storage.

Fuggerei: The World's Oldest Housing Project

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 10:00 PM PDT

The world's oldest continuous "social settlement" is der Fuggerei in Augsburg, Germany. It was established 1521 by Jakob Fugger, a wealthy banker, merchant, and mining investor, to house the needy. The rent is the same as it was then, one Rhenish Guilder, which is less than one euro. Per year. The 67 houses of Fuggerei hold 140 apartments, with 150 residents. The neighborhood is a gated community, so to speak, with enclosed walls, its own church, and a museum. It is still supported by the Fugger Foundation, through returns on its investments over almost 500 years, supplemented by admission to the enclave and museum, which costs 4 euros. Disagreeing with Bill Watterson in the Style of <i>Calvin and Hobbes</i>

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT

The artist Bill Watterson is most famous for his comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. In 1990, he gave a speech at Kenyon College about the ideals of an artist. Gavin Aung Than illustrated a portion of it, which went viral through the internet this week. You can read it here.

They were nice words and Mr. Than illustrated them very well, but the entire piece struck me as more than a little naive. David Willis, the artist behind Shortpacked, apparently agreed. This is his delicious rebuttal.

The Story Behind Stockholm Syndrome

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT

You've probably heard of "Stockholm Syndrome," in which a hostage begins to sympathize with his or her captor, such as in stories about the Patty Hearst case. But where did the syndrome get its name? From a case of bank robbery in Sweden a year before Hearst was kidnapped.

The whole thing went down over a period of six days, from August 23 through August 28, 1973. On the first day, Jan-Erik Olsson strolled into Kreditbanken in central Stockholm, Sweden, and single-handedly held the place up. Of the two policemen who responded to the call, Olsson shot one in the hand and made the other sit in a chair, ordering him to sing something. (The policeman chose “Lonesome Cowboy,” in case you’re interested.) Olsson then took four hostages and started making demands: He wanted his friend and expert bank robber Clark Olofsson brought to the bank. He wanted 3 million Swedish Kronor. And he wanted a couple of guns, some bulletproof vests, some helmets, and a fast car.

Over those six days, the hostages came around to trusting the bank robbers more than the police. Read the rest of the story at mental_floss. Link

Chimp Wins $10,000 Art Prize

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The Humane Society of the United States held an art competition for chimpanzees. The winner was announced yesterday. Brent, a 37-year-old retired laboratory chimp who lives at Chimp Haven in Louisiana, won the top prize: $10,000 for his sanctuary!

A Chimp Haven spokeswoman said Brent was unavailable for comment Thursday. “I think he’s asleep,” Ashley Gordon said.

Brent has his own unique painting technique. He only paints with his tongue. Chimp Haven's president Cathy Willis Spraetz, says the chimps paint canvases that are held outside their enclosures.

Some other chimps use brushes or point to the colors they want on the canvas, but Brent comes up to smush pre-applied blobs of child-safe tempera paints with his tongue, she said.

“If we handed the canvas to them where it was on the inside, they might not want to hand it back,” she said. “They might throw it around and step on it.”

Cheetah, from Save the Chimps in Fort Pierce, Florida, won the second place prize of $5,000 -and an additional $5,000 as the winner of Jane Goodall's personal choice award. Link -via Fortean Times

Artist Fled Russia After Painting Putin in Lingerie

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Photo: Olga Maltseva

What do you say to a Russian artist who has just painted President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in lingerie? Three words: "You better run."

Artist Konstantin Altunin fled to Paris, where he's applying for political asylum, after his paintings were seized from a recently opened Museum of Power in St. Petersburg:

According to the Museum of Power's director Tatyana Titova, a group of more than 10 security personnel carrying machine guns confiscated Altunin's paintings on Monday night and forced the museum to close. [...]

Altunin's painting entitled “Travesty” shows Putin's and Medvedev's heads atop women’s bodies. In another painting, Russian parliamentarian Vitaly Milonov, the initiator of a controversial "gay propaganda" ban introduced earlier this year, stands against a rainbow background.

Don't speak ill of the Commonwealth of Kentucky in her presence because Miss Cellania never took that oath. And I bet she'd be proud to own one of these silkscreened prints made on vintage road maps of her state.

Fat But Fit: Metabolically Healthy Obesity

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 11:35 AM PDT

Photo: Suzanne Tucker/Shutterstock

Can you be fat and healthy at the same time? Apparently so, according to a new study by University of Pennsylvania physicians and obesity researchers who say that there are people with "metabolically healthy obesity."

Many obese people are classified as such when their body mass index or BMI reaches a certain value. BMI, a formula based on a person's weight and height, was invented by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the early 19 century and has garnered wide acceptance as a simple way to measure "fatness." It's quick and easy to administer - requiring only a scale and a ruler - and allows for comparison for broad populations, taking in age and country-by-country variations. Indeed, BMI is a good statistical measure of the obesity of a whole population of people.

Doctors have noted, however, that some people with BMI in the obese range are actually quite healthy and that in many cases, fat people fare better than thin ones with the same ailments. In the "obesity paradox," researchers noted that diabetic patient of normal weight are twice as likely to die than those who are obese. Others have pointed out that thin dialysis patients are more likely to die than heavier ones.

In recent years, the medical field has began to accept that BMI is not a reliable measure of health in individuals, and that some people who are obese do not have nor are they in any danger of developing obesity-related diseases.

But how many people are actually "fat but fit" and "not fat but not fit"? The answer may surprise you. For 1 in 5 Americans, BMI may actually tell the wrong story:

- 8% of normal-weight adults in the United States are actually metabolically unhealthy
This translates to 19.2 million people whom doctors may not currently worry about but should.

- 10% of obese adults are actually metabolically healthy
This means that 24 million chubby Americans are not in any danger of dying because of obesity-related illnesses, but are probably badgered by their family, friends and employers to lose weight.

When Judges Fight

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 11:34 AM PDT

Forget the gavel! When push comes to shove, Mexican judge Justice Miguel Angel Falcon decided that trial by combat was better than all that lawyerly stuff:

A Mexican judge sprang from his chair to push and punch two fellow justices during a court session, adding to a string of embarrassments for Mexico's scandal-plagued judicial system.

The head of the Morelos state appeals court said Thursday that Justice Miguel Angel Falcon had brought shame upon the court and faces possible impeachment, though he couldn't be immediately suspended following the Wednesday attack.

The stocky Falcon got mad at fellow judge Ruben Jasso, at one point calling him "stupid," and then became enraged when Jasso accused Falcon of insulting him.

As Jasso spoke, Falcon suddenly leaped from his chair, rushed over to Jasso and began pummeling him, apparently knocking him to the floor. Another justice who got in his way was knocked back into his chair.
