Stop the Delay -- Save Gunnison Sage Grouse

Dear Center Supporter, Since 2000 the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recognized that Gunnison sage grouse -- showy, comical birds with famously elaborate mating displays -- need the legal protection of the Endangered Species Act to escape extinction. But the Service has fallen short of giving them actual protection. Under a settlement agreement with the Center for Biological Diversity, the Service finally proposed to protect the species in January -- along with 1.7 million acres of critical habitat. Sadly, in July the Service bowed to political pressure. It agreed to delay the final rule for six months and reopened the public comment period. Now the fate of Gunnison sage grouse hangs in the balance. Without the legal protections they desperately need to survive, we could lose these charismatic creatures forever. The reopened public comment period closes on Sept. 3. -- we only have one week to make a difference.
