Hey Guitarist,
The guitar is so much fun because its
like an endless world to explore and
new things.
Today I'll show you one of my favorite
chords and talk a little bit about it.
One thing that you might know is that
the same chord can have different names.
Yep... Well, take even a single note for
example.
What's the note between F and G? It could
be called F sharp (F#) or G flat (Gb).
Same thing with chords. You can have
various names for the same chord.
Anyway, here's the chord:
-----5-------
-----5-------
-----5-------
-----4-------
-------------
-------------
I'm sure that there's many other names
for this, but I like to think of it as
either a D9 chord or an Amin6 chord.
Let me show you a few other chords
and how you can derive this one.
First take an A minor 7 chord like this:
-----5-------
-----5-------
-----5-------
-----5-------
-------------
-------------
The lowest note in this voicing is the 5th fret
D string, which is a G. That's the seventh!
Now if you lower that 5th fret to the 4th fret,
you have your 6, hence Amin6.
Ok, now where the heck do I get "D9" from?
Well , if you take this D7 chord:
-----5-------
-----3-------
-----5-------
-----4-------
-------------
-------------
and take the D note on the 3rd fret B string,
and raise it up to the 5th fret, that's an E
note, which is the 9th.
Notice there is no longer a D note in the D chord!
But that is not all that unusual when you're playing
funky chords like this.
Anyway, it really helps to know your chord families
all over the neck. That way, figuring out this
kind of stuff is not hard.
I talk more about chord families in Killer Guitar
Control Secrets (www.guitarcontrol.com/main.php)
So what can you do with this chord? Well it sounds
great just by itself with a funky strum rhythm.
You can also try sliding it around and especially
try sliding into it from one fret below.
Sounds like James Brown!
Nice....
Anyway, I hope you had fun with this chord and
