If you would like one of these opportunities, and can get there at 6:00 pm, contact me at suzannemoak@yahoo.com ASAP.

Location Notes:

The Saum got its name from the Saum Architects who built this 9-story luxury hotel in 1926. It went into foreclosure during the Depression, but now serves as an apartment with 118 units - all currently occupied. Many of the historical details have been retained including crown moldings and chandeliers in the ballroom, which used to be a restaurant and is now an event space that can be rented. Apartments range anywhere from $465 for an efficiency to $2570 for a penthouse.

Our event will be in the ballroom, the historic lobby which includes a well-tuned grand piano, and the residents' Club Room. See www. www.villagegreen.com/st-louis/the-saum/ . They are currently 100% occupied, so we won't be able to see any Saum apartments. But guests who arrive before 7:00 pm can tour the vacant penthouse in the Hutcheson Arms Apartments with a private rooftop deck a few buildings down the street. See http://www.villagegreen.com/st-louis/hutcheson-arms/

Wine Notes:

South American wines are the "new kids on the block", as they have only recently arrived on the export market in the last few decades. There are several wine regions in South America, each with their own flavor and style of wine.

Argentina: Although Argentina is the 5th largest wine producer in the world and has been producing wine since the 16thcentury; most of the wines were made to be consumed in that country. Historically, the Malbec has been this country's predominant red grape, but recently this grape has been displaced by the Italian Bonarda. The country's number one white varietal is Torrontes, which has a lemony citrus aroma. The red varietals, in general, are considered better than the white wines. New production standards and laws enacted since 1999 have further helped Argentine wines gain credibility and recognition around the world.

Chile: Almost half of all grapes planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, however the Casablanca Valley is known for its white wines. Chilean producers of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay are modernizing to help them capture a share of the international market. Certain areas also produce a good Riesling.

Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul represents 95% of the wine production in Brazil. Some somelliers consider the wine from the south of Brazil even better than French wines.

Uruguay: The source of some interesting wines just now being discovered by the general public. It boasts some 300 wineries, but most produce no exports.Tannat, a red grape, has become Uruguay's leading variety. But most Uruguayan wines are difficult to find in the U.S.

Each guest at this event will bring a bottle of South American wine or an appetizer to share
