When server virtualization was less mature than it is now, backing up a virtualized machine was even more daunting. VMware was the undisputed leader in server virtualization, and its rudimentary VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) was an IT team's only option. In those days, leading data protection products were being appreciably reengineered to back up VMware environments -- but without the benefit of the robust backup APIs they could leverage with Windows- hosted applications. Thus, a new data protection segment arose, focused on backing up virtualized environments.
