Making Google Glass More Fashionable

Posted: 01 Sep 2013 02:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Google)

Google is trying to improve the appearance of Glass, its wearable computer interface. At CNET, Eric Mack writes:

[...] the above revision of Glass is among the first I've seen that was designed by the Google team and doesn't look like it was lifted from the pages of some old DC Comics.

The new design was posted on Isabelle Olsson's Google+ page a few weeks back. Olsson is the lead industrial designer on the Glass team who the New York Times recently described as "one of a group of women charged by the company with turning Glass into the next It accessory."

Would you rather wear one that looks like modern fashion or something from science fiction?

Simon Tofield shows us how to draw the hedgehog from his Simon's Cat cartoons. He makes it look so easy! I kept expecting the cat to walk in and demand attention, but that doesn't happen in this video. I bet he's busy plotting his revenge. -via Tastefully Offensive

Man Says Cops Weighed His Cocaine Wrong. He Knows Because "That's What He Does for a Living."

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Police in Fort Pierce, Florida arrested a man and a woman for shoplifting at a Walmart. While searching them, police found crack cocaine and pills on the man. The suspect, it turned out, was a professional in the crack cocaine distribution industry:

"While weighing the narcotics on a scale at the county jail, Ames yelled from the back of my patrol car that I was doing it wrong. Ames told me . . . that I needed to press the scale button to grams," a report states. "Ames told me that the reason he knew how to separate/weigh crack cocaine and pills is because that's what he does for a living."

Career paths involving crack cocaine generally are frowned upon by law enforcement.

Mustache Facts

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 08:00 PM PDT

To further your knowledge of facial hair, Doghouse Diaries has supplemented the earlier Beard Facts with things you should know about mustaches. The only thing I would add is that, if your significant other shaves his mustache off, you really should notice and say something about it, even if it was the same color as his face. Otherwise, there will be hurt feelings. Don't ask me how I know. Link -via Tastefully Offensive

Kentucky Fried Chicken Selling Deep Fried Soup

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Is it even possible to deep fry soup? Apparently, and that can only be a good thing. Rocket News 24 reports that KFC outlets in Japan sell deep fried versions of corn potage:

One of the current darlings of the Japanese palate is the creamy soup corn potage. A common fixture in Japanese cafes, its popularity exploded when popular popsicle brand Gari Gari-kun expanded its lineup to include a corn potage flavor, which went on to become such a huge hit stores couldn’t keep it in stock.

But while Gari Gari-kun’s parent company hit upon the idea of freezing the soup, KFC Japan has chosen to run in completely the opposite direction, and will be releasing a deep-fried corn potage fritter next month.

The Stairways to the Stars

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 06:00 PM PDT

As Los Angeles grew in the 1920s, in large part because of the film industry, city planners built hundreds of outdoor staircases into the hills to connect new homes with public transportation at the bottom. They aren't used much anymore, as residents are more dependent on cars.

The film studios were the first to develop the area, building compact bungalows to house their actors and technicians. Both Chaplin and Disney lived here.

Movie carpenters would build sets during the week and homes at the weekend. Charles said this accounted for the local architectural hotchpotch that is often ridiculed. A Moorish castle next to a Spanish villa, next to a Tudor mansion - the carpenters were inspired by whatever they had been building on the studio backlots that week.

Our second staircase was thankfully unobstructed. Here, in 1932, Laurel and Hardy tried and failed to move a piano to the top in The Music Box. The film won an Academy Award. I'd seen it over and again as a child and remembered it fondly.

There were now buildings either side but it was still quite recognisable. For such a historic landmark it was still remarkably unkempt, its history simply marked by a defaced granite plaque inset into one of the lower steps.

Take a tour of those staircases both then and now with Charles Fleming of the L.A. Times and Zeb Soanes of the BBC. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

A Close Call in a Rock Slide

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 04:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

A heavy storm in Keelung, Taiwan, dislodges a rock perched at the top of a hill. It comes to rest on the road, in a spot where the white car could have easily been, if the landslide hadn't nudged it over. Go back to the beginning of the clip to see the rock start to move. The white car did not get away unscathed, but it could have been so much worse. Here's what the boulder looked like in better weather. -via reddit

Honeywell Magnet is 17% Off

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

The Honeywell Ademco 944WH-M Magnet is on sale at Amazon for the bargain basement price of $131,299,998.69! But you'd better hurry to snap up this bargain, because there's only three left in stock. You have to wonder how many were sold at the original price of $158,599,998.99. It's possible that only particle physicists with the backing of global supervillains would have use for this. But there are some glowing (and no-so-glowing) customer reviews.

I have been looking at this magnet for a while, but could no longer pass it up after the 17% discount. My personal space program will just have to wait.

I deducted two stars for ineffective packaging, as the UPS delivery driver could not get it loose from the side of his truck. They eventually had to just cut the side out of the truck. causing me to have to pay for repairs. On the upside, I now have a 1' by 1' square piece of UPS truck, which I use for a night stand.

Oh, also, when I set the box on my kitchen table, it pulled my fridge across the room, my car from my driveway, and the collar and tags from my neighbor's Cocker Spaniel. It compressed all of these into a Higgs Boson.

Shipping and handling is an extra $6.95. On the bright side, I hear it cures cancer. Link -via b3ta

Pirate-Themed CT Scanner in a Children's Hospital

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Macey J. Foronda/Buzzfeed)

It might almost make a kid want to go to the hospital! The New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital redesigned its CT scanning room, adding pirates:

“There aren’t scary pirates — there’s a pussycat pirate and one that looks like Curious George,” says Dr. Carrie Ruzal-Shapiro, chief of Pediatric Radiology. “The parents have been really positive too. It makes it less scarier for the kids.”

On average, New York-Presbyterian has about 200 inpatients per day, treating about 150 kids each day in the pediatric emergency room. And every day kids ranging from newborn to age 21 come in for CT scan for ailments from neonatal abnormalities to abdominal pain to head trauma. “Our more adult patients ages 17 to 21 ask for the pirate scanner, too,” Ruzal-Shapiro says.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Thank you for joining us on this Labor Day weekend! Monday is the holiday set aside to recognize the workers that made America great. Generally it has come to symbolize the end of summer, and many schools start their year after Labor Day (my kids have been in school four weeks already). Whether you celebrate with a picnic, parade, family gatherings, or just kicking back and watching movies, you should have some time to catch up on everything that's been going on here at Neatorama.

Alex posted the 10 Most EPIC Photos from Red Bull Illume 2013 on the Neatorama Spotlight blog.

Eddie Deezen wrote about Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas.

Pottering About Bezoars was from The Annals of Improbable Research.

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader gave us the story of The Great Boston Fire.

The Cheese Doctor is In came from mental_floss magazine.

Don't you miss out on our regular columns, either, like Questions in Need of Answers. This week, David Israel asked What Blogs Are Worth Bookmarking? We got some really good suggestions!

Hy Conrad was back with another Whodunit, called The Poker from Nowhere.

We had one BRI list this week, Beauty Secrets from the Good Old Days.

In this week's What Is It? game,  the mystery object is a tool for binding corn shocks. Read more about it at the What Is It? blog. But we were looking for funny answers this week. Ewach said it was obviously a narwhal prosthesis. Ladybugs said they are "whatsits and dinglehoppers from Ariel's collection. Or at least that's what she tells Flounder, Sebastian, & Scuttle. Ariel doesn't want them to know those are actually spear guns." Ha! Those are both worth a t-shirt from the NeatoShop. Congratulations! Thanks to everyone who entered, and thanks to the What Is It? blog.

The post with the most comments this week was Questions In Need of Answers - No. 7: What Blogs Are Worth Bookmarking? Coming in second was "If You Want the American Dream, Go To Finland" and Hey Girl by Edison came in third place. Those threads are still open if you want to contribute your two cents worth.

The comment of the week was when Toyvo Bassman Nachesa reacted to the post Who Will Ascend to the Keyboard Throne by saying, "Game of Thrones? Nah, Throne of Games."

The most popular post was Japan World Cup 3. Following was I Forgot My Phone and Meet The World's Oldest and Largest Wombat.

The most ♥ed post was Awesome Dad Hacks Wheelchair So That His Son Can Control It. In second place was Love Song Written by a 96-Year Old Man to Honor His Wife of 72 Years, and Couple, Married for 66 Years, Died Hours Apart in "Final Act of Love" was third.

And the most emailed post this week was Love Song Written by a 96-Year Old Man to Honor His Wife of 72 Years, followed by Ponies Chillaxin' at the Beach and Meet The World's Oldest and Largest Wombat.

It's easy to share our posts on social networking sites with just a click. There's a row of buttons that appears at the bottom of individual posts to help you share it on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, G+, as well as email. I took at look at those stats this week.

The posts that produced the most likes on Facebook were Love Song Written by a 96-Year Old Man to Honor His Wife of 72 Years and Breakfast Bacon Taco.

The most shares on G+ went to Meet The World's Oldest and Largest Wombat and Skulls Made from Vinyl Records.

And Meet The World's Oldest and Largest Wombat and Love Song Written by a 96-Year Old Man to Honor His Wife of 72 Years were the most-Tweeted posts.

Coming up this week, we have not only Labor Day on Monday, but also Rosh Hashanah beginning Wednesday. Happy New Year! Also, I'm looking for the perfect opportunity to make fun of Texas in retaliation for one of John's posts. Holidays or not, Neatorama will have new stuff for you to enjoy every day, around the clock!

Book Bookends
