| Posted: 09 Sep 2013 04:00 AM PDT The trick of attracting insects by resembling insects is a genius move by a many species of orchids. But there can be danger in such specialization. | Raccoon Pool Party! I Want to Play Posted: 09 Sep 2013 03:00 AM PDT These little critters live in the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation center in Colorado, where they were adopted as orphaned babies. Now that they're all grown up, they'll soon be released back into the wild. Before that happens though, they get to celebrate their time together with one last summer pool party! | ||||||||

It's like a sharknado made out of pork! Tornado hot dogs are spiral cut potatoes threaded over long hot dogs. They're often served at fairs and carnivals. You can see more photos of these culinary wonders at the link.
| School Misspells Own Name on Yearbook Cover Posted: 09 Sep 2013 01:00 AM PDT Moorhead High School in Moorhead, Minnesota, received the finished yearbooks for 2013, and found their school -and town- was misspelled. On the cover. It said Moorehead.
There has been some discussion of making a label to cover it up, but how unique would that be? The class of 2013 will look back at this in twenty years and laugh. Link -via Laughing Squid
| A Crystal Ball Ring Perfect for Halloween Posted: 09 Sep 2013 12:00 AM PDT I predict you will have a good Halloween -at least if you make your own delightful crystal ball ring like this one. Trinkets In Bloom can tell you how to make your own ring, which would be a great accessory for a witch or fortune teller costume. | ||||||||

| Should Hide and Seek Be an Olympic Sport? Posted: 08 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT
According to Yasuo Hazaki, it should. That's why he's organized a committee to advocate for the traditional children's game at the Olympics:

| Halloween Costumes of Children's Book Characters Posted: 08 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT Alanna George made this Very Hungry Caterpillar costume for just a couple of dollars, and it looks just like the caterpillar in the book! It's just one of many literary costumes that put kids in their favorite books. See twenty more at Buzzfeed. Link | ||||||||

| Posted: 08 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT As Dana Barzilay said, "When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water." But, Dan Piraro of Bizarro Comics warns, not always. | ||||||||
| Posted: 08 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT They died 400 years ago, and were never dressed this fancy in life. They remain dressed and bejeweled, hidden away in catacombs and storage lockers. These skeletons were revered as martyrs of the Catholic Church in their time. Some were even considered saints, even though they weren't canonized.
That's when the bones were dressed in finery, decorated with jewels, and put on display for local church members to venerate. In the 19th century, many of them were discarded or hidden away in storage. Art historian Paul Koudounaris, author of the book Heavenly Bodies, found and photographed dozens of jeweled human relics. Read about them at the Mail Online. Link
| Posted: 08 Sep 2013 05:00 PM PDT Apparently, this wolf is pretty damned concerned about the happiness of this baby. In fact, whenever she starts crying, the pup starts singing to help calm her down. | ||||||||
| Topographical Map of Greenland under the Ice Cap Posted: 08 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT
Greenland is covered with a sheet of ice, but that hasn't stopped scientists from examining the land beneath. A recent study led by geographer Jonathan Bamber mapped an enormous valley in the interior of the island:

It's hard to improve upon the magnificence of the ice cream sandwich, but chefs in Los Angeles have done just that. At the Churro Borough, you can eat ice cream sandwiches made between pieces of fresh churro:

| The Strange Life Cycle of the Maleo Bird Posted: 08 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT The Maleo is not like other birds. It lays its eggs in the warm sand of Sulawesi island inIndonesia and then takes off -never to return until its lays more eggs. The eggs hatch, and the merging birds are on their own. Their survival depends on the skills they are born with, which includes flying! But these birds are endangered because of geographic isolation and the fact that people dig up the eggs to eat. | Posted: 08 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT I do this and it definitely works. Cartoonist Sebastien Millon is right: dogs radiate contentedness. Just lie down next to your dog and do nothing (a canine skill) for a few minutes. | ||||||||
| Sheep Teaches Young Bull to Head-butt Posted: 08 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT The sheep is handling his students with patience and gentleness. The bull, being a bovine and therefore pretty stupid, doesn't seem to be learning much. -via Tastefully Offensive |
