Bee Orchid

The trick of attracting insects by resembling insects is a genius move by a many species of orchids. But there can be danger in such specialization. This is not the first time that Randall Munroe of xkcd made me go all verklempt over something that has no feelings. Link -via Ed Yong

These little critters live in the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation center in Colorado, where they were adopted as orphaned babies. Now that they're all grown up, they'll soon be released back into the wild. Before that happens though, they get to celebrate their time together with one last summer pool party!

School Misspells Own Name on Yearbook Cover

Posted: 09 Sep 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Moorhead High School in Moorhead, Minnesota, received the finished yearbooks for 2013, and found their school -and town- was misspelled. On the cover. It said Moorehead.

“They proofed the book and the cover, and they missed it,” district spokeswoman Pam Gibb said. “I don’t know that there’s much we can do now. It’s a mistake, and it was made.”

The district can’t afford to reprint the yearbooks, which annually cost about $20,000 to $21,000 to produce, Gibb said, noting final invoices haven’t been paid yet for the 2013 yearbook. Sales of the 2013 book have totaled about $19,000 so far, she said.

There has been some discussion of making a label to cover it up, but how unique would that be? The class of 2013 will look back at this in twenty years and laugh. Link -via Laughing Squid

Should Hide and Seek Be an Olympic Sport?

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Darren)

According to Yasuo Hazaki, it should. That's why he's organized a committee to advocate for the traditional children's game at the Olympics:

Prof. Hazaki set up the Japan Hide-and-Seek Promotion Committee in 2010 and the organisation has around 1,000 members across the country. Many are university students, but the sport can be enjoyed by anyone, he emphasises. [...]

The committee has set formal rules for competitive hide-and-seek, pitting two teams of seven players against each other in a 10-minute match. In the first five-minute half, one team is given two minutes to hide on a "pitch" that measures 65ft x 65ft . The opposing team then has to locate and touch the hiding players.

In the version for children under the age of 12, the pitch measures 55 feet x 88 feet.

POLL: Should the Olympic Games include hide and seek?

  • Yes. It can be a serious, competitive sport.
  • No, it's a children's game.

Jewel-encrusted Skeletons

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

They died 400 years ago, and were never dressed this fancy in life. They remain dressed and bejeweled, hidden away in catacombs and storage lockers. These skeletons were revered as martyrs of the Catholic Church in their time. Some were even considered saints, even though they weren't canonized.

Thousands of skeletons were dug up from Roman catacombs in the 16th century and installed in towns around Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the orders of the Vatican.

They were sent to Catholic churches and religious houses to replace the relics destroyed in the wake of the Protestant Reformation in the 1500s.

That's when the bones were dressed in finery, decorated with jewels, and put on display for local church members to venerate. In the 19th century, many of them were discarded or hidden away in storage. Art historian Paul Koudounaris, author of the book Heavenly Bodies, found and photographed dozens of jeweled human relics. Topographical Map of Greenland under the Ice Cap

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 04:00 PM PDT

(Image: LiveScience)

Greenland is covered with a sheet of ice, but that hasn't stopped scientists from examining the land beneath. A recent study led by geographer Jonathan Bamber mapped an enormous valley in the interior of the island:

The broad chasm is up to 2,600 feet (800 meters) deep and 6 miles (10 km) wide, similar to America's Grand Canyon in scale, the researchers said. The distinctive V-shaped walls and flat bottom suggests water carved the buried valley, not ice, Bamber said. Though it is not the world's deepest canyon, it's the longest, handily besting the 308-mile-long (496 km) Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in China.

Exploding Flowers

Photographer Martin Klimas (previously at Neatorama) has a new art series called Rapid Bloom in which he shows beautiful blossoms mid-explosion!

…he drops flowers into liquid nitrogen and then shoots them with an air gun from behind. Klimas wanted to show the flower, in its entirety, in one single shot, a flower in full bloom turned into a fascinating piece of abstract art.

Mile-High Comedians

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Flying can be scary. That;s why flight attendants and pilots sometimes try to add a little levity (get it?) to the experience. Here are some actual airplane announcements that readers have sent us.

PREPARING FOR TAKEOFF

"As we prepare for takeoff, please make sure your tray tables and seat backs are fully upright in their least comfortable positions."

"There may be 50 ways to leave your lover, but there are only four ways off this airplane."

"Your seat cushions can be used for floatation, and in the event of  an emergency water landing, please take them with our compliments."

"To operate your seatbelt, insert the metal tab into the buckle, and pull tight. It works just like every other seatbelt, and if you don`t know how to operate one, you probably shouldn't be out in public unsupervised."

"Should the cabin lose pressure, oxygen masks will drop from the overhead area. Please place the bag over your own mouth and nose before assisting children or adults acting like children."

"Any person caught smoking in the lavatories will be asked to leave the plane immediately."

"We'd also like to remind you to turn off your cellular phones, computers, video games, or any other electronic device that may interfere with the captain's pacemaker."

IN-FLIGHT GUFFAWS FROM THE PILOT

"Mornin', folks. As we leave Dallas, it's warm and the sun is shining. Unfortunately, we're going to New York, where it is cold and rainy. Why in the world y'all wanna go there I really don't know."

"We are pleased to have some of the best flight attendants in the business. Sadly, none of them are working this flight."

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have reached our cruising altitude of 30,000 feet, so I am going to switch the seat belt sign off. Feel free to move about as you wish, but please stay inside the plane till we land."

"Once again, I'm turning off the seat belt sign. I think I'll switch to autopilot, too, so I can come back there and visit with you for the rest of the flight."

"Folks, if you were with us last week, we never got around to mentioning that it was National Procrastination Day."

"The weather in San Francisco is 61 degrees with some broken clouds, but they'll try to have them fixed before we arrive."

LANDING AND DE-PLANING

As the plane touched down and was coming to a stop, the pilot's voice came over the loudspeaker: "Whoa, big fella. Whoa!"

"Sorry about that rough landing, folks. I'd just like to assure you that it wasn't the airline's fault, it wasn't the pilot's fault, it wasn't the flight attendants' fault. It was the asphalt!"

"We ask you to please remain seated as Captain Kangaroo bounces us to the terminal."

"As you exit the plane, please make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the flight attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses."

"Thank you for flying Business Express. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride."

"Thank you for flying with us today. And, the next time you get the insane urge to go blasting through the skies in a pressurized metal tube, we hope you'll think of us."

"Last one off the plane has to clean it."

Churro Ice Cream Sandwiches

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Los Angeles Magazine)

It's hard to improve upon the magnificence of the ice cream sandwich, but chefs in Los Angeles have done just that. At the Churro Borough, you can eat ice cream sandwiches made between pieces of fresh churro:

Imagine this: warm, freshly fried, spiral-shaped churros the size of cookies—but thicker, like a small donut—holding, ever-so-gently, a creamy scoop of caramel peach ice cream. The churro is fluffy yet crisp, with a thick layer of cinnamon sugar clinging to its delicate surface. The ice cream, made from a custard base, leaves nothing to the imagination. It's rich and cool and just what you've been waiting for all week long.

The Strange Life Cycle of the Maleo Bird

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

The Maleo is not like other birds. It lays its eggs in the warm sand of Sulawesi island inIndonesia and then takes off -never to return until its lays more eggs. The eggs hatch, and the merging birds are on their own. Their survival depends on the skills they are born with, which includes flying! But these birds are endangered because of geographic isolation and the fact that people dig up the eggs to eat. Read all about the Maleo at Ark in Space. Link -via the Presurfer
