Happy Labor Day! The summer season comes to a swinging end this afternoon with highlights from the 2013 Newport Jazz Festival. Chet Williamson is taking a well deserved day off as we transport you to lovely Newport for some great live music. That's 4-6pm today Do your grilling to the sounds of the most famous jazz festival in the world. Artists include Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Terence Blanchard and Eddie Palmieri. Enjoy. Pianist Brad Mehldau opens the Music Worcester season next month. Brad is the Artist of the Month all September on WICN!

Hear Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, October 4th at Mechanics Hall for the first time in Worcester, just days before they play Carnegie Hall. This Grammy-winning orchestra has been earning rave reviews for over 40 years. Brad Mehldau, legendary jazz pianist, and WICN's Artist of the Month for September, accompanies the Orchestra. The program features Mehldau mixing classical symphonies with his own jazz piano concerto in a way that dynamically expands the borders of classical music.

Monday, September 2, 4pm 
HOUR ONE - A set celebrating Wayne Shorter's birthdayHerbie Hancock & Wayne Shorter Quartet, Rez Abbasi Trio, Gregory Porter sings the title song from his soon-coming album Liquid Soul. Terence Blanchard Quintet with guest Herbie Hancock playing "Footprints" by Shorter.
HOUR TWO begins with two bands, each with a foot in New Orleans - one new, one celebrating 35 years. Jon Batiste & Stay Human, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Joshua Redman's "Summertime," Eddie Palmieri Salsa Orchestra with vocals by Herman Olivera and Joseph Gonzalez

Jazz at Lincoln Center: Music of Billy Strayhorn
Monday, September 2, 6PM
Duke Ellington described him as "my right arm, my left arm, and all the eyes in the back of my head." Composer Billy Strayhorn penned some of Duke's most enduring songs, but he himself remained in relative obscurity. Vocalist José James and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra interpret Strayhorn classics including Lush Life, Take a Train and Something to Live For.

 
Soul Serenade: (Hard) Labor Day

Join host Tom Shaker as we celebrate the end of summer with soul songs about work. You'll hear The Isley Brothers, James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, Rose Royce and many others. It all starts at 7 PM!

Voice actor/singer Rachel MacFarlane discusses her role as "Haley" on American Dad and other characters on Family Guy, working with her brother Seth, and her debut jazz CD Haley Sings, celebrating her character's (and her own) love for jazz.


  Song Travels with Michael Feinstein: Barry Manilow
Wednesday, September 4, 6PM
Pop icon Barry Manilow got his start arranging for TV and writing commercial jingles. He was Bette Midler's pianist before he recorded his 1974 breakout hit "Mandy". The rest is chart topping history. Manilow joins Feinstein for this hour, and performs his tune "I Am Your Child".

 

Folk Revival: Labor Songs for Labor Day

Music from the long tradition of topical/ protest folk songs, including Woody Guthrie, the Almanac Singers, Pete Seeger, Barbara Dane, Rik Palieri, George Mann, Joe Joencks, the New Harmony Sisterhood Band, Peggy Seeger, and many more!

Dashiell is a vocal and arranging student at Manhattan School of Music, onstage at the KC Jazz Club with a band of her brothers. Pianist Rodriguez from Cuba amazes with his prowess and originality.

Wheeler Winston Dixon, the James Ryan Endowed Professor of film studies and professor of English at the University of Nebraska visits . In his new book Streaming: Movies, Media, and Instant Access, Professor Dixon declares that we are now in the "postfilmic era", when movie film will cease to exist and all movies will be shot and streamed digitally. Emmy and Grammy Award winning author, composer, and producer Christopher Cerf also joins us with a compendium of everything that is out to get you: Encyclopedia Paranoiaca: The Indispensable Guide to Everyone and Everything You Should Be Afraid of or Worried About. Together with Henry Beard and the staff of the all too aptly named Cassandra Institute, they have produced a grand accounting of all the things to avoid at all costs, completely cross referenced and indexed for your paranoid convenience.

Artist of the Month
Brad Mehldau
 
This month, WICN highlights the musical career of Brad Mehldau, American Jazz pianist and composer. He has been actively recording albums, performing solo as well as with several well-known artists since the mid-1990s. Mehldau is known as an improviser as well as a student of the formal architecture of music. He incorporates spontaneous musical ideas, strong narrative arches, and traditional structure into each of his performances to create a type of "controlled chaos."
