Pundits are attacking scientists—to scare them into silence. Help give them the tools and support to stand strong. | Dear UCS supporter, When news broke that climate scientist Dr. Katharine Hayhoe was helping Newt Gingrich write a book addressing climate change, people who reject climate science went on the attack. They attacked her in the press. She started receiving hate mail—some of it unprintable. Rush Limbaugh demeaned her as a "babe named Hayhoe."1 A group with ties to the billionaire Koch brothers tried to invade her privacy by suing for access to her emails.2 People like Limbaugh and the Koch brothers know they can't win on the facts—so they try to bully scientists into silence. By becoming a UCS member today, you help researchers like Dr. Hayhoe stand up to the politicians, front groups, and pundits who harass scientists and demean their work. Help scientists in jeopardy—join the Union of Concerned Scientists now to be one of the 750 donors needed by Monday to power campaigns to defend science. The support you provide is decisive—and appreciated. Dr. Hayhoe said she "received a lot of advice about how to respond to the attacks, but the Union of Concerned Scientists was the group that had my best interests as a scientist at heart." Scientists under attack are especially grateful for your support—because UCS members understand the value of scientific integrity. When bloggers vilified Dr. Shaun Marcott for his groundbreaking study of global warming—because they didn't like what his data showed—UCS members helped Dr. Marcott focus the media on his findings, not on the false controversies peddled by climate-denying front groups. "I never expected this to happen," said Dr. Marcott. "I'm glad there's a group like UCS that can be there for scientists when they're attacked for their work." Here's how you're helping scientists when you become a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists: - You're protecting scientists who speak the truth. UCS members were instrumental in passing groundbreaking whisteblower protections—in part by showing lawmakers over 400 federal experts uncomfortable with their agency's censorship of science.
- You stand up for the facts. UCS teaches scientists how to clearly communicate their research to the public and respond to attacks.
- You're helping empower scientists to make a difference. The 20,000 scientists and technical experts who are members of our Science Network are given unique opportunities to connect with policy makers, directly impacting laws that protect our planet.
The next round of attacks could happen any day—for Dr. Hayhoe, Dr. Marcott, or another courageous scientist. We need experts who are willing and able to stand up to the bullies and defend their work—to advance a cleaner, healthier, safer future. And these scientists need you. Be part of the solution. Join the Union of Concerned Scientists now. On behalf of all the scientists we work with, thank you for your support. | Sincerely,
