We are quickly losing elephants. View in web browser. Dear Friend, The sad fact that I have to report to you today is that we are losing elephants fast. Agricultural expansion, conflicts with people, and poaching are all taking their toll. Because of the demand for ivory, poaching alone is now contributing to the deaths of as many as 25,000 elephants each year. But, with your immediate action, working with our grantees in the field, we can fight to save threatened wildlife like these majestic animals. Your tax-deductible contribution will help support the work of National Geographic grantees in their efforts to protect wildlife around the globe. Some of our grantees are working to stop the loss of elephants by: Tracking and identifying the most vulnerable elephant populations and getting them the protection they need now. Developing tools to help law enforcement stop poachers and those involved in the illegal ivory trade. Implementing innovative, effective, community-based programs that make elephants far more valuable alive than the price of a single pair of tusks. The conservationists we fund are working to protect these sensitive giants by combining the latest technology and scientific research with hands-on programs to change hearts and minds in the communities closest to the areas where elephants roam. For instance, with your support National Geographic grantee Sam Wasser is helping to build a database of elephant DNA. This will enable law enforcement to trace poached ivory back to a specific elephant herd, and help them identify poaching hotspots. Thanks to the support of caring people like you, our grantees are also turning entire communities into elephant custodians. Eventually, these people will become the elephants' early warning system to enable authorities to intervene before poachers start killing. We know, if fully implemented, these efforts will save elephants. But in order to do that, we need your help now.
