Apple confirms iMessage glitch in iOS 7, vows fix coming soon Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) confirmed that it is aware of a glitch affecting iMessage users who've upgraded their device to its revamped iOS 7 operating system, promising a fix in the works. iMessage lets consumers send free text messages, photos and videos between all iOS devices, offering an alternative to conventional operator SMS offerings. Since late September, consumers have turned to Apple message boards and Twitter to report issues like messages going unsent, unreceived or erroneously formatted. The problems appear to impact a variety of iPhone models running iOS 7, launched on Sept. 18. "We are aware of an issue that affects a fraction of a percent of our iMessage users, and we will have a fix available in an upcoming software update," Apple said in a statement. "In the meantime, we encourage any users having problems to reference our troubleshooting documents or contact AppleCare to help resolve their issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes impacted users." Apple introduced iMessage in mid-2011. The computing giant said in July that customers have sent roughly 900 billion iMessages since the app's inception. Apple CEO Tim Cook has called iOS 7 "the biggest change to iOS since the introduction of the iPhone," highlighting the elimination of skeuomorphism, the longstanding iOS design aesthetic that leverages real-world images and metaphors like linen-textured backgrounds, wooden bookshelves and spiral-bound notebooks. iOS 7 also heralds the launch of multitasking for all apps, AirDrop wireless file sharing and the iTunes Radio streaming music service. Last week Apple rolled out iOS 7.0.2, a supplemental operating system update that resolved a security vulnerability enabling anyone to bypass the device lockscreen to access personal data. Facebook retools mobile app install ads to boost engagement, conversions Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) is overhauling its mobile app install ads program, unveiling a series of new features built to help businesses increase engagement and conversions within their applications. The Facebook install ads, introduced last fall, promote Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android applications based on the apps and games consumers already access on their smartphones. The new features aim to reach users that have already downloaded a given app and direct them back into specific features, content or products within the software framework--businesses may choose from seven different calls to action, including universal actions like "Open Link" or "Use App," along with more vertical-specific prompts such as "Shop Now," "Play Game," "Book Now," "Listen Now," or "Watch Video." According to Facebook, retailers can leverage the new options to notify existing mobile app users of a current sale or promotion--a game can alert existing players to new levels and features, a music app can deliver a new playlist and travel apps can offer discounted fares and getaway packages. "Our aim is to provide an end-to-end mobile solution that helps app developers reach the right people, acquire new users, keep those users engaged, and measure the performance of their campaigns," said Facebook software engineer John Ketchpaw. Facebook mobile app install ads have now driven more than 145 million downloads across Apple's App Store and Google Play, Ketchpaw added. Facebook now boasts 819 million mobile active users, increasing 51 percent over the second quarter of 2012. Mobile daily active users exceed 469 million. According to a recent eMarketer forecast, the social networking giant will surge from 5.35 percent global mobile ad share in 2012 to 15.8 percent this year, trailing only Google at 53.2 percent. Facebook recently announced that mobile ads now generate 41 percent of its total revenues, up from 30 percent in the first quarter of this year. Google Chrome for Android adds new touch gestures Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is introducing a new version of its Chrome browser for Android, adding new touch gestures letting users more quickly navigate open tabs and access the menu. The retooled Chrome, available for devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and higher, enables users to swipe horizontally across the top toolbar to switch tabs. Dragging vertically down from the toolbar brings up the tab switcher view--users may also drag down from the menu to open the menu and select the desired item without lifting a finger. Google software engineer Kibeon Kim said the new features will roll out over the next few days. Google unveiled Chrome in 2008 and expanded the browser to Android and Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS last year. Chrome for mobile touts many of the same features as its desktop counterpart, and it enables users to port bookmarks and saved tabs from PCs to smartphones and tablets. Earlier this year Google launched Blink, an open-source rendering engine spinning out of WebKit, the engine powering Chrome as well as Apple's Safari browser. Google and Apple collaborated on WebKit for years, with each contributing to the same open-source codebase. With the decision to fork WebKit into Blink, that cooperation is over: Google and Apple are now working separately to introduce new browser features and enhancements. Trend Micro: Android malware threats, high-risk apps eclipse 1M mark Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android mobile operating is under attack by more than a million malware threats and high-risk applications, according to new data from security software firm Trend Micro. | | Click here for a bigger version of this chart from Trend Micro. | Seventy-five percent of questionable apps identified by Trend Micro perform outright malicious routines like sending messages to certain numbers and registering users to costly services, while the remaining 25 percent exhibit dubious routines, including adware, said the company's technical communications editor Gelo Abendan. Malware family FAKEINST led all malware threats at 34 percent, followed by the OPFAKE family at 30 percent. "FAKEINST malware are typically disguised as legitimate apps. They are also premium service abusers, which sends unauthorized text messages to certain numbers and register users to costly services," Abendan explains. "The OPFAKE malware is similar to FAKEINST, particularly in mimicking legitimate apps. However, a variant showed a different side of the malware, as it was found to open an .HTML file that asks users to download a possibly malicious file." Shifting the focus to high-risk apps, ARPUSH and LEADBLT combined to represent 60 percent of threats to Android user security. "Both are known adware and infostealers, collecting device-related data such as OS information [and] GPS location," Abendan notes. Trend Micro adds that mobile device threats are not limited to rogue versions of popular apps and adware: "Threat actors are also pouncing on mobile users' banking transactions, with the likes of FAKEBANK and FAKETOKEN malware threatening users," Abendan states. Security experts have blamed Android fragmentation for the platform's vulnerabilities, noting that the vast majority of devices run older versions of the Android OS, preventing them from receiving new security measures delivered by Google and leaving users exposed to threats. Critics also maintain that Google has failed to sufficiently police its Google Play digital storefront, making it easy for attackers to distribute malware via Android apps. Nokia launches incremental HERE map updates to reduce data consumption Nokia (NYSE:NOK) is revamping offline mapping across its HERE real-time location services platform, introducing incremental updates designed to reduce data consumption. "When an update is available, you don't have to download all your maps anew, only those roads and other map features that have been updated will be downloaded," explains Nokia Maps team member Pino Bonetti. "On average, this means 85-90 percent less data and therefore a much faster update process. If, say, you have downloaded 1.5 GB of maps, you can expect updates to weigh in at roughly 216 MB." Nokia is rolling out HERE incremental updates to all of its smartphones running Microsoft's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 8. "To see whether incremental updates are available, you can download the latest offline maps by going to settings > applications > maps > check for updates," Bonetti says. Nokia launched the cloud-based, platform-agnostic HERE in late 2012. HERE aggregates a variety of location-specific services including maps, directions and local deals, also touting indoor mapping options. The service processes 20 billion real-time GPS probe points each month--almost half of all HERE data is less than one minute old, and more than three-quarters of it is under five minutes old. In late August, Nokia unveiled HERE Auto, an embedded, in-dash navigation system arriving alongside a companion smartphone application for Windows Phone and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android. The HERE Auto suite delivers mapping information with and without a data connection: Drivers may access turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation spanning 95 countries as well as 2D, 3D and satellite map views including street-level imagery. The HERE Auto Cloud service also offers motorists always-on access to real-time traffic updates, dining recommendations and fuel pricing alerts, as well as information on where to park and where to recharge an electric vehicle. Yahoo acquires mobile sports app maker Hitpost Yahoo is acquiring Hitpost, the developer behind sports-themed mobile social applications including Sports Bet and Fantasy Football Polls. Hitpost is the latest in a series of recent Yahoo acquisitions intended to boost the company's mobile presence.
