1. Google: Our Project Loon wind data will be better than NOAA's


Weather balloons naturally expand as they rise into high altitudes where air pressure decreases, and they eventually get so high that they burst. However, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) indicates its Project Loon airborne broadband balloons should be able to avoid such a frightful and early demise as they surf the stratosphere's winds.

"The altitude that we fly at is actually above 99 percent of the atmosphere, which means that we have a lot of the same physical challenges as flying in outer space yet we still have to deal with the chaotic nature of the wind patterns," said Keith Bonawitz, computational choreographer for Google X, Google's secretive lab, in a YouTube video.

"We need to know where the winds are in the stratosphere so we can surf those winds in order to go different places," he said.

Google been using data from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) regarding predicted stratospheric wind directions. One shortcoming in NOAA's wind data is that it comes from weather balloons, which spend a limited time floating ever higher in the stratosphere before they pop and therefore don't have a lot of ongoing information to share.

Google's test balloons, which the company tracks via GPS and can remotely steer, are flying at the same speed as the wind currents. Because the company intends to keep a fleet of balloons aloft at all times, Google expects it will be able to gather vast amounts of information from its own balloons regarding wind currents, which it intends to share with NOAA.

"As we have better understanding, that's enabling us to fly more balloons with greater confidence and provide ourselves with even more data. So we have this ever-improving understanding of the stratosphere," Bonawitz said.

He noted that as Google's fleet comes fully online, the data it provides should help improve the quality of wind predictions coming out of NOAA. That could make a nice payback for NOAA's ongoing assistance in helping Project Loon remain airborne.

Google announced Project Loon in June, describing the plan as a way to deliver low-cost Internet access via balloons. Early testing is being conducted in New Zealand and California.

2. Facebook, Cisco expand 'logins for free Wi-Fi' effort


Some may consider this the ultimate in convenience while others eye it suspiciously as the ultimate in privacy invasion, but either way Cisco Systems and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) are expanding their initiative that enables people to log into public Wi-Fi networks using their Facebook credentials.

Cisco and Facebook have been testing the concept with small businesses for about a year, giving the two enough confidence to expand it to national chains. They said the service will help large businesses--such as restaurants, hotels, retailers and other public locations--use Wi-Fi to raise their brand recognition and proactively target promotions and advertisements based on customer preferences and demographics.

As soon as a customer's mobile device connects to the Wi-Fi network of a participating business and opens a browser, the Facebook check-in page will appear. After checking in, the customer is directed to the business' Facebook page to receive the latest information or promotions from the venue.

Businesses will also be able to gather aggregated anonymous insights about people's activity on their Facebook page, including demographics such as age, gender, and city. That is likely to raise privacy concerns, at least among folks who think trading that sort of information is high stakes for a wireless connection.

"Businesses can analyze this data to better understand their customer's preferences and deliver targeted promotions--ultimately improving their advertising and marketing campaigns," Cisco and Facebook said in a joint release.

Cisco and Facebook are from alone in their attempt to use wireless technologies for location-based marketing efforts. But linking social media to Wi-Fi logins will likely provide marketers with considerably more information about customers than they would glean from, for example, the collection of MAC addresses from passing smartphones, as some London recycling bins had been set up to do earlier this year before being shut down due to privacy concerns.

And by acknowledging that they are logging into a Wi-Fi network via Facebook, customers will be giving the service explicit permission to use their personal information in an anonymized fashion.

The Cisco Connected Mobile Experience (CMX) with Facebook Wi-Fi is already in pilot testing with national brands such as the Bonefish Grill, which has deployed the system at two of its restaurants.

Cisco noted the new service is built upon its Unified Access architecture. Specifically, CMX for Facebook Wi-Fi uses a software connector on the Cisco Integrated Services Router (ISR) G2 or Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 1000 routers with UCS blades or the Mobility Services Engine to enable end-users to connect to the Wi-Fi network and check-in to the venue's Facebook profile.

Meanwhile, Facebook has been exploring other ways to link advertising and wireless technologies. This past summer, it filed a patent application for a social networking system that would work via a direct link between devices participating in a wireless mesh network and would allow individuals as well as advertisers to communicate with those devices. The system's design would enable it to deliver location-based communications and advertising between devices.

3. Microsoft flaunts WISER method of identifying TV white space


Researchers from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) are touting an alternative to geo-location technology for detecting available TV white space (TVWS) spectrum within indoor spaces.

"The geo-location approach has been studied extensively. While it does work, it has severe limitations," said Minghua Chen, a CUHK professor in the department of information engineering. "As an alternative, we have developed a new system, WISER, that uses sensing technology in a more efficient and cost-effective way than ever before."

WISER, is a somewhat creative acronym for White-space Indoor Spectrum EnhanceR. It is designed to identify and track as much TVWS spectrum as possible within urban, indoor locations without causing interference to spectrum that is in use.

TVWS--the unused portions of TV spectrum--can be used for unlicensed wireless communications. But TV band devices (TVBDs) are often required to use dynamic spectrum access (DSA) technologies, which query a geo-location database to determine available frequencies in particular location. Google (NASDAQ:GOOG)  is among companies operating such a TVWS database system in the United States, having won approval for operation from the FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology earlier this year.

Microsoft contends that approach can be expensive and difficult to implement. Further, the company argues that there is often more spectrum available for use than indicated by a geo-location database, "especially in metropolitan cities such as Hong Kong where the wireless environment is complex."

This is especially true indoors, which is a critical shortcoming given that 70 percent of the demand for spectrum comes from indoor environments.

According to Chen, CUHK and Microsoft first identified the indoor TVWS availability issue three years ago and have been studying the issue since. "On average we found 40 percent more TV spectrum to be available indoors," Chen said.

WISER is designed to make use of this additional spectrum, and a prototype has already been built and tested in the Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building on the CUHK campus.

According to a blog post by Ranveer Chandra, senior researcher at Microsoft, WISER differs from other spectrum sensing technologies in that it "optimizes the position of a limited number of sensors," allowing researchers to "control costs and maximize effectiveness, without losing out on accuracy."

"Our results show that WISER can identify 30 to 50 percent more indoor white spaces than other approaches," Chen said. "With proper regulation in place, any interested building could adopt WISER to optimize wireless communications using TV white spaces."

Chandra noted that WISER techniques can be applied beyond TVWS for dynamic spectrum access in other spectrum as well.

TVWS is available for unlicensed access in the United States and Finland. Further, Singapore's Infocomm Development Authority recently wrapped up a consultation on white spaces, and UK regulator Ofcom is preparing to conduct TV white spaces pilots and has said the technology could be fully rolled out during 2014.

4. Nokia supports NFV with latest OSS upgrade


Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Solutions and Networks said it has virtualized the latest version of its NetAct operations support system (OSS) to provide off-the-shelf management of network functions virtualization (NFV).

NSN NetAct 8 is a virtualized, single OSS for managing radio, core and transport networks. Virtualization enables NetAct 8 to deliver high availability independent of any single hardware platform, thus reducing operators' capex as well as opex, the company said.

"We've brought OSS into the cloud age, using automation and virtualization to cut running costs, add greater flexibility and ensure superior network quality. NetAct 8 covers network operations with tight link to service operations, eliminating the need for multiple management systems," said Peter Patomella, NSN vice president, OSS.

The NFV concept reflects telcos' desire to leverage low-cost, high-power, off-the-shelf servers rather than proprietary, black box hardware.

Jane Rygaard who is head of CEM, core and OSS marketing at NSN, said that due to the performance demands of its customers, NSN over the years has not been able to to be as flexible as is wanted when it came to specifying the hardware that would run its OSS software. "We had to be quite specific on the hardware requirements," she noted.

But the introduction of NetAct 8 has changed that. "We no longer need the dedicated hardware for the different functions," Rygaard said.

NSN has long pitched its ability to conduct simultaneous mutli-technology management for 2G, 3G and LTE networks. Rygaard said the vendor has now made its OSS software more modular, so it is is easier to expand, change and allocate resources as operators extend network management resources across different systems.

According to Rygaard, virtualization of the OSS is an essential precursor for any operator that is considering virtualizing its core network functions.

NSN has been running several proof-of-concept projects involving core network element software running on top of a virtualized infrastructure. To move such projects from the lab into real-world deployments, "you have to make sure that your OSS systems can cope with that," she noted.

With operators looking to virtualize their network cores as early as next year, Rygaard said that "from the OSS side, it has been extremely important for us to say, 'We know how to be ready for that next step when the network side is ready to virtualize.'"

NSN is also launching off-the-shelf integration between its Service Quality Manager and CEM on Demand, with the latter comprising a portal and range of software content packs. Further, the vendor's new Service Fulfillment Introduction Pack was created to help operators launch services in weeks instead of months by linking a service catalog and central repository of subscriber services.

5. Spirent enables real-world testing of positioning technology


The expanding vision for location-based services (LBS) is driving the need for solutions that enable mobile operators and device manufacturers to test location features on devices in real-world conditions. To that end, Spirent Communications has added what it describes as carrier-approved Assisted Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GNSS) record-and-playback capabilities to its Hybrid Location Technology Solution (HLTS).

The new capability records GNSS signals in the field and delivers synchronized assistance data over a radio access interface for testing of the A-GNSS positioning performance of mobile devices in a lab environment. 

"With user location playing a key role in most smartphone services and applications, A-GNSS positioning performance greatly influences the end-user experience," said Nigel Wright, Sprirent's vice president of wireless. He added that accurately testing this technology using real-world field conditions helps ensure high quality LBS and emergency service performance. 

A-GNSS uses an assistance server to provide satellite information to a mobile device. Combining GNSS signals from multiple satellite positioning systems (such as GPS and GLONASS) with assistance data delivered by the network to the device, A-GNSS is regarded as the most universal and precise positioning technology, Spirent said.

LTE to Wi-Fi offloading is driving IEEE's 802.11HEW effort

When it comes to Wi-Fi advancements, a lot of the focus over the years has been on improving maximum data speeds. But IEEE's 802.11HEW initiative is a taking a different tack in that it is targeting enhancements to the efficiency and performance of wireless local area networks to make them even better complements to LTE-based mobile networks.

802.11HEW--the HEW stands for high-efficiency WLAN--officially advanced to the study group (SG) stage at IEEE this past July after receiving approval from the IEEE 802 EC in March. Three meetings have been held regarding the initiative, with the most recent one taking place during September in Nanjing, China.

IEEE is targeting ways to enhance the 802.11 PHY (physical layer) and MAC (media access control) in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrum with a focus on improving real-world, rather than theoretical, spectrum efficiency and area throughput. It is also aiming to improve the performance of indoor and outdoor deployments in the presence of interfering sources and dense heterogeneous networks in moderate to heavy user-loaded access points.

The major driver behind 802.11HEW is "carrier offload," said Bruce Kraemer, who is senior manager for strategic marketing at chipmaker Marvell Technology Group and also serves as a member of IEEE's board of governors and chairs IEEE 802.11. He stressed that his comments to FierceWirelessTech regarding 802.11HEW represent his views rather than IEEE's.

The mission behind 802.11HEW is to improve the behavior, capabilities and feature set of 802.11 "to make it a friendly option for LTE going forward" and "improve offloading from licensed cellular networks to unlicensed Wi-Fi networks," Kraemer added.

According to Veli-Pekka Ketonen, CTO of 7signal Solutions, which provides performance optimization for WLAN applications, "The past standardization work has been very much focused on increasing the maximum speeds, maximum capabilities. This new standard is not so much about improving maximum speeds but improving the practical use and experience."

He added that, "in real-life situations there has to be a better way to handle how access points and radios interact to use all the capabilities of the radios."

Laying the groudwork

French telco Orange was a key driver behind the creation of 802.11HEW, pushing to make 802.11 technology the best complementary pairing with LTE given that Wi-Fi really was not designed for the kinds of dense deployments many mobile operators are envisioning. Many other companies, such as Huawei, Broadcom, Qualcomm, China Mobile and NTT DoCoMo, quickly hopped on the bandwagon.
