Rumor Mill: Microsoft urging HTC to support Windows Phone on Android devices Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is petitioning handset maker HTC to support its Windows Phone mobile operating system as a second option on devices already powered by Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, Bloomberg reports. Sources with knowledge of the matter said that Windows Phone Corporate Vice President Terry Myerson has discussed reducing or even eliminating Windows Phone licensing fees to make the pitch more attractive to HTC executives. The talks are preliminary and no decision has been made, two insiders added. The technical details are also murky, and it's unknown whether HTC phones would run Windows Phone and Android at the same time, or let users select their default OS. A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment. HTC did not respond to a request for comment. While Taiwan-based HTC has supported both Android and Windows Phone, the manufacturer has not unveiled a new Windows Phone device since June 2013 and no additional releases are planned, a source revealed. HTC has struggled to remain competitive in the mobile device market as rivals like Samsung Electronics have gained momentum: HTC shares have lost close to 90 percent of their value since April 2011, when the company was second only to Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) in U.S. smartphone sales. According to ABI Research, HTC was the world's 12th largest handset maker in the second quarter. Indeed, HTC reported its first-ever quarterly loss, of $120 million, according to Reuters. The results stand in stark contrast to Samsung, which is predicting better-than-expected quarterly earnings. In August, The Wall Street Journal reported HTC is also developing its own custom mobile operating system targeting the massive Chinese consumer market, complete with deep integration with popular Chinese apps including the Twitter-like microblogging service Weibo. Insiders said HTC is currently testing smartphones running the software and prototypes are in the hands of Chinese officials, with a commercial launch expected by the end of 2013. Microsoft has also struggled to gain a foothold in the hyper-competitive mobile segment. Windows Phone currently makes up just 3.9 percent of the global smartphone market and is expected to climb to only 10.2 percent by 2017. Last month, Microsoft reached an agreement to purchase Nokia's (NYSE:NOK) mobile phones business and a license to its patents and mapping software for $7.2 billion, a move that promises to give Microsoft the flexibility to accelerate the development of Windows Phone-powered devices, allowing the company to compete more effectively against Apple and Google, which in 2011 acquired Motorola's mobile phone business for around $12.5 billion. Android and Apple's iOS together account for an estimated 93 percent of worldwide smartphone sales. Report: Google Play Music All Access expanding to Apple's iOS this month Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is poised to roll out a version of its Google Play Music All Access streaming service optimized for archrival Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS, Engadget reports. Sources with knowledge of Google's plans said the company is currently testing the native iOS app internally, with a commercial launch expected by the end of October. Insiders said the app will include the same features integrated into the original Google Play Music All Access app for Android, highlighted by personalized recommendations and customized radio stations tailored to users' music collections and previous listening behavior. After Google first unveiled the All Access app at its annual Google I/O developer event in May, product manager Paul Joyce told Engadget he hoped to someday expand the service to the iPhone and iPad, but explained that its digital rights management restrictions hinge on Adobe Flash technologies, and Apple has famously refused to support Flash across the iOS platform. It is unclear how Google has overcome that obstacle; the company did not respond to a request for comment. Google Play Music All Access is available now to U.S. consumers with Android devices. After a 30-day free trial, the service costs $9.99 per month. Google has continued building out the app in the months since its initial launch, last month adding new genre-specific radio stations allowing listeners to access unlimited music across a range of categories encompassing pop, jazz, country and beyond. Google Play Music All Access competitors include Apple's fledgling iTunes Radio as well as Pandora. Last month, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) released native Xbox Music applications for both Android and iOS, offering premium subscribers on-demand streaming access to more than 30 million songs. Apple acquires personal assistant app Cue to challenge Google Now Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has acquired personal assistant application Cue. Financial terms were not disclosed, although insiders told TechCrunch that Apple paid between $40 million and $60 million. Apple confirmed the purchase to The Wall Street Journal, issuing its boilerplate response: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Cue--already removed from Apple's App Store--provided customized daily schedules leveraging information collected from across the user's applications and accounts, including email, contacts and calendars as well as Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) posts, Dropbox files and LinkedIn updates. From there, Cue allowed users to change or cancel reservations, check into flights, track shipments or notify contacts of schedule changes. Cue appears to complement Apple's existing Siri voice assistant service and the new Notification Center, introduced in conjunction with the company's iOS 7 mobile operating system, launched last month. Cue also recalls the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Now personal assistant service, introduced for Android in mid-2012. Google Now presents a series of virtual "cards" containing information about local weather, traffic, events and nightlife, each automatically generated in relation to a user's present whereabouts, the time of day and information in the users' Google account. Twitter files for $1B IPO, mobile users fueling 65% of ad revenues Less than a month after revealing its plans to go public, Twitter has made its S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission public, revealing the microblogging platform aims to raise $1 billion on close to 473 million shares of common stock. According to the S-1 document, Twitter revenues almost tripled to $316.9 million in 2012, fueled largely by its advertising efforts, with net losses reaching $79.4 million. In the first half of 2013, revenues increased to $253.6 million but losses totaled $69.3 million. Twitter's monthly active users now exceed 215 million, up 44 percent from 151.4 million in June 2012; MAUs post more than 500 million tweets per day, and 75 percent access the platform via mobile device. Mobile traffic now drives 65 percent of all Twitter ad revenues, the filing adds. In mid-September, Twitter acquired mobile advertising exchange MoPub for a reported $350 million in stock in an effort to further accelerate its mobile aspirations. Twitter pulled in average revenue per user of 64 cents during the second quarter of 2013, compared to $1.60 for social media rival Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), according to Reuters calculations. Losses are "a non-issue," according to Brian Wieser, analyst at Pivotal Research Group: "It would have been a surprise if they had a profit. Here's the number that really matters. It's the revenue per customer. The question is how much is the typical commitment they're getting from advertisers at this time." Twitter will trade under the stock symbol TWTR. Co-founder and former CEO Evan Williams holds 12 percent of the company; chairman and co-founder Jack Dorsey controls 4.9 percent, and current CEO Dick Costolo holds 1.6 percent. Peter Fenton, the board member representative of investment firm Benchmark Capital, controls 6.7 percent. Facebook Home adds Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr support Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) continues building out its much-maligned Home launcher for Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android, adding support for the social networking giant's own Instagram photo-sharing app as well as rival media sharing platforms Pinterest, Tumblr and Flickr. Facebook Home, unveiled in early April, is an alternative homescreen that pushes the company's mobile services to the forefront of the Android user interface. "When you wake up your phone, swipe through photos and posts from Flickr, Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram, in addition to Facebook," said Facebook engineering manager Tom Alison. "Connect these apps to Home to get started." The new integrations will begin testing within the Facebook for Android Beta program, Alison added. Facebook acquired Instagram for $715 million last year. More than 150 million Instagram users worldwide now capture and share images each month, an increase of 50 million users over the last six months. Yahoo owns both Flickr and Tumblr, purchasing the latter for $1.1 billion in May 2013. Insiders say independently-owned Pinterest is setting its sights on an IPO after kicking off advertising sales last month. Close to six months after Facebook Home launched, the app remains limited to only a handful of Android devices, and among the roughly 24,000 consumers who've submitted Home reviews to the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Play marketplace, close to half have awarded it just one star, the digital storefront's lowest rating. Facebook said last month it would bolster Home with content from other social networks. "Home is slower rolling out than I would have hoped," Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg confessed at that time, but maintained it is too early to call the app a flop. "One of the toughest things is determining when something isn't going to work versus just hasn't worked yet," he explained, noting that consumers "loved" Chat Heads, a messaging feature since ported from Home to other Facebook mobile apps. "We're patient. It's early. I still fully believe that [Home] is going to be something a lot of people want over time," Zuckerberg said. "Getting content delivered to your homescreen and being ambiently aware of what's going on I think is a very valuable thing." Facebook now boasts 819 million mobile active users, increasing 51 percent over the second quarter of 2012. Mobile daily active users exceed 469 million.
