Today's Top News

1. Comcast installing Wi-Fi at Philadelphia train stations

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) said Tuesday that it plans to install Wi-Fi hotspots at 70 train stations in Philadelphia over the next five years.

The MSO also said it now offers Xfinity Internet subscribers free access to more than 300,000 Wi-Fi hotspots. That figure includes wireless access points installed by Comcast, neighborhood hotspots deployed through new wireless gateways in subscriber homes and the Wi-Fi hotspots subscribers have access to through Comcast's roaming agreements with MSOs such as Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Cablevision (NYSE: CVC).

Cablevision recently struck a deal with New Jersey Transit to install Wi-Fi transmitters on train stations and trains. It's still working on a similar pact with the Metropolitan Transit Authority, which oversees train services in Long Island and New York suburbs.

2. SCTE pushes distributors to invest in disaster recovery

After Hurricane Sandy left Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and other distributors scrambling to repair damaged networks and restore service for subscribers, organizers at last weeks' SCTE Cable-Tec Expo made business continuity and disaster recovery planning a key focus of the convention.

"Our threats are not getting any better. They're getting worse," SCTE CEO Mark Dzuban told FierceCable during an interview last week near the SCTE central exhibit at the Georgia World Congress Center. The showcase included the mobile command center RV that Cox Communications brought in May to Oklahoma City, where tornadoes destroyed many homes of Cox subscribers and the MSO's employees.

Alpha Technologies showed equipment packages that local cable operators could purchase to help respond to disasters, including trailers containing generators, fuel tanks and first aid kits.

Fuel shortages impacted both consumers and telecom providers in New York and New Jersey in the weeks following Hurricane Sandy. The SCTE exhibit featured fuel storage tanks from Performance Petroleum that operators could place at local facilities. Time Warner Cable is one of Performance Petroleum's customers. The company was showing fuel storage tanks and safety equipment that cost $40,000, which owner Jon Mayer noted is comparable to the cost of a new pickup truck operators may purchase for field personnel.

SCTE also hosted a luncheon on the opening day of the convention that featured a speech from Brian Allen, Time Warner Cable's chief of security, who discussed some of the lessons the MSO learned from Sandy.

"While we'd like to think of Sandy as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the reality is that we can expect to be faced with similar challenges again. By documenting our efforts, we expect to improve our ability to maintain and quickly restore essential services when natural or man-made events threaten our networks in the future," Allen said in a prepared statement.

3. Comcast looks to jolt multiscreen advertising at 'Impressions Everywhere' event

Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) said Monday that it will host a multiscreen advertising event at its Philadelphia headquarters on Nov. 7, which will include panels featuring executives from ESPN, comScore, MediaVest and Comcast.

The MSO's Comcast Spotlight ad-sales division is organizing the media event, called "Impressions Everywhere." Comcast Consumer Services EVP Marcien Jenckes will detail its multiscreen advertising strategies during a keynote address, the MSO said.

Comcast has been one of the more aggressive distributors when it comes to striking deals with programmers and tech vendors aimed at monetizing content though distribution on tablets, smartphones and other IP-connected devices. In May, it announced that it was teaming up with Disney's (NYSE: DIS) ABC to deliver targeted advertising to subscribers using the Watch ABC app so they could watch live programming from local ABC stations. Earlier this month, Comcast announced a deal with Twitter which could help it drive viewers and ad revenue to its NBCUniversal networks by letting subscribers set remote DVR recordings by clicking on a "See It" link in Twitter feeds.

The Impressions Everywhere event will include a panel about ESPN's Project Blueprint measurement initiative with comScore and Arbitron. Kelly Johnson, ESPN's senior director of audio, integrated media and promotion research, and Joan FitzGerald, comScore VP of television and cross media service, will speak on the panel.

Comcast said the event will feature a panel on "Impressions Everywhere Strategy," which will include Nielsen Director of Integrated Solutions Sarah Calkin Ward, Interactive Advertising Bureau SVP of Research for Analytics and Measurement Sherrill Mane, MediaVest EVP and Research Director David Shiffman and Comcast Media 360 Group VP Andrew Ward. Executives from Civis Analytics will also speak at the event, Comcast said.

4. Time Warner Cable to double speed of Ultimate tier to 100 Mbps in Los Angeles

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) said Monday that it has doubled the speed of its Ultimate Internet tier to 100 Mbps in Los Angeles, and that it will offer Ultimate 100 in New York City and Hawaii by the end of the year.

The MSO doubled the speed of its Ultimate tier to 100 Mbps in the Kansas City area earlier this year, where it faces competition from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Fiber's 1-Gig product. Launching faster speeds in New York and Los Angeles could help TWC compete with Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) FiOS Quantum tiers, which range in speed from 50 Mbps to 500 Mbps.

TWC said it'll expand Ultimate 100 to more markets in 2014, but didn't specify the individual markets or give more details about the timing of the rollout. The MSO also announced that it is replacing its 1 Mbps Lite Internet tier with a 2 Mbps tier which will cost $14.99 monthly.

The speed upgrades will meet demand from subscribers to "stream, download and connect simultaneously across multiple devices," Steve Cook, SVP and GM of TWC's residential Internet division, said in a prepared statement.

Look for TWC to discuss how the speed upgrades will impact capital spending on Thursday, when it reports third-quarter earnings.

5. Dish using iPad loaners on Southwest flights to market Hopper

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) said Tuesday that it is beginning to supply passengers from Southwest Airlines with free iPad 2 loaners that they can use to watch TV programming during their flights.

The move, aimed at helping Dish market its Hopper multiroom DVR and other products, comes about three months after Dish announced that it had signed a marketing agreement with Southwest. Dish said the iPads are available at Southwest terminals at Chicago-Midway International Airport, Denver International Airport and Oakland International Airport.

SPOTLIGHT ON... FCC issues order on 700 MHz interoperability solution

In today's spotlight, FierceWireless takes a look at the FCC's decision to approve an order implementing a 700 MHz interoperability solution that will eventually give smaller carriers access to the same 700 MHz LTE devices AT&T (NYSE: T) use. The order--which puts the FCC's imprimatur on an industry-led solution first announced in September--effectively settles an issue that had bedeviled the industry for years. It also represents a set of interlocking commitments and promises that will ultimately give Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) more time to build out a network on the 700 MHz spectrum it owns. Read more
