| | | How to Play Stocks in Q4
I can't be the only one who's noticed the scary amount of negativity in the financial media during the past few days. I've seen as many as a dozen negative or pessimistic-leaning articles and columns in the Wall Street Journal and Barron's alone. Alas, the federal shutdown, the schism among political party leadership, vagaries of Obamacare and a multitude of other stories are enough to drive one to drink.
But such feelings can be a good thing. Uncertainty may be a negative for the market, but it can create opportunities in stocks, especially those recently having had a bit of a run. What's more, in the next 10-14 days we will begin to see the start of 3Q13 earnings season and get the last bout of guidance for 2014.
With the backdrop of the quarter's end and the macro issues, we recommend taking a Rip Van Winkle approach to stocks. Take five ... or at least take a nap for a couple of days to ride out the volatility. There may be more throughout the month as we wait for clarity on the macro issues and company financials.

Cheers!
Since we live in a very "PC" society, one has to be careful what one says. We must be mindful of addressing or initiating certain conversation topics, lest they offend another party. Regular readers of The Stock Junction have probably figured out I rarely adhere to such nonsense. Not only have we profiled "sin stocks" involved in marijuana, gaming, and guns, but we even recommended a company that produces and sells female condoms.
In the absence of highlighting a strip club chain (yes, there is such a stock), I realized that the only category I seem to have omitted is the booze business ... or as it is more properly referred to in the marketing world - beer, wine and spirits.
I confess I am not much of a drinker. While I do not drink a lot of beer, I find that I usually have a taste for ale unless I am at a bar watching sports, where I tend to migrate toward lighter beers. I actually prefer spirits to wine and beer. In fact, my liquor cabinet is stocked with more scotch than wine, as I am part of a single-malt scotch club with some friends.
