| | | Investors Are Fatigued
I've had some interesting conversations with institutions in recent days. After commiserating about the stock market, we agree on a few key issues.
First and foremost, it is patently obvious that investors - particularly retail investors - are fatigued. We may not see it in meaningfully lower volumes across the board, and it may seem like an obtuse thought given the recent major index highs. But it is clear, nonetheless.
This fatigue stems from this summer's stock trading. Typically, we see lower trading volume in July and especially in August, followed by increasing interest in September. After a tough June this year, however, there was so much interest in stocks in July that the market roared higher and investors became very engaged. When August arrived, many of the same drivers from July still held true, which in turn made September unusual as well.

How to Play Stocks in Q4
I can't be the only one who's noticed the scary amount of negativity in the financial media during the past few days. I've seen as many as a dozen negative or pessimistic-leaning articles and columns in the Wall Street Journal and Barron's alone. Alas, the federal shutdown, the schism among political party leadership, vagaries of Obamacare and a multitude of other stories are enough to drive one to drink.
But such feelings can be a good thing. Uncertainty may be a negative for the market, but it can create opportunities in stocks, especially those recently having had a bit of a run. What's more, in the next 10-14 days we will begin to see the start of 3Q13 earnings season and get the last bout of guidance for 2014.
With the backdrop of the quarter's end and the macro issues, we recommend taking a Rip Van Winkle approach to stocks. Take five ... or at least take a nap for a couple of days to ride out the volatility. There may be more throughout the month as we wait for clarity on the macro issues and company financials.
