I Wouldn't Want to Play Roller Derby With She-Hulk

Posted: 07 Oct 2013 04:00 AM PDT

As someone who used to play roller derby, I can tell you, those girls are tough. That being said, I don't think all but the best skater could hold their own against Batgirl and even the greatest blocker in the world would fly across the rink with even the tiniest bump by She-Hulk.

Of course, I would pay all kinds of money to see a roller derby match between Marvel and DC heroines -though it is hard to imagine any rink could actually withstand the brutality their match ups would inevitably result in.

These adorable derby dames were created by delightful geek artist Kevin Bolk.

Butt Pudding

Posted: 07 Oct 2013 03:00 AM PDT

A Japanese manufacturer is selling a kit from which you can make a gelatin/pudding dessert that looks like a shaking butt. For real.

The dessert is a tribute to the character of Shin Nohara  on the Japanese manga series Crayon Shin-chan. The five-year-old Shin apparently shows his butt occasionally. I could not find any source to explain why a five-year-old would wear a red thong, so the tie-in with the character may be window dressing to make the product look respectable.

We can't say how it tastes, but you can watch a video of the process of making it at I New Idea. -via Everlasting Blort

Cats Love Babies

Posted: 07 Oct 2013 01:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Which is cuter to watch in a video: cats or babies? It doesn't matter, because in this compilation video you have both!

It was once "common knowledge" that cats should not be allowed access to babies because they would take their breath, or smother them. It is thought that this old wives tale was born because cats are attracted to the smell of milk in a baby's mouth. It just looks like the cat is trying to suck the breath out of a baby.

In my experience, most cats are pretty tolerant of babies, and will put with their cluelessness. After all, we love babies of other species, too! That said, first encounters between any cats and babies should be supervised by adults. -via Tastefully Offensive

Monument to Lab Mice: Mouse Knitting a DNA Strand

Posted: 07 Oct 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Photo: Anna Gorbunova - via Sib.fm

A lot of what we know about genetics come from studies using lab mice, so scientists at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia, came up with this tribute: a monument featuring a cute bespectacled mouse knitting a strand of DNA.

Prof. Nikolai Kolchanov of the institute said to Sib.fm, that the monument "symbolizes gratitude for the animal that humanity has used to study genetics, molecular and physical mechanisms of diseases, as well as for the development of new drugs."

The mouse was sculpted by local artist Andrew Kharkevich, who said, "It combines the image of the laboratory mouse and a scientists ... [The] mouse is captured in the moment of scientific discovery. If you look into her eyes, you can see that this little mouse has come up with something. But the whole symphony of scientific discovery, joy, "Eureka" have not yet been voiced"

Our Big American Refrigerators

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 11:00 PM PDT

The Atlantic has an article about how Americans developed a preference for large refrigerators. Refrigerators tend to be much bigger in the U.S. than in most countries of the world. On the surface, that may seem to be just one more indication that Americans are rich overconsumers, but the trend has more logic to it than that. Oh sure, we like to have a supply of perishable food that is safe to eat, but consider these differences between the U.S. and other countries.

* In small, denser countries, people shop for food every day. Most of the U.S. is dominated by larger supermarkets and fewer neighborhood grocers. Therefore, shopping more often means more driving. Americans also work longer hours, making daily food shopping difficult.

* The U.S. developed a huge ice industry in the 19th century. Ice vendors convinced us that ice was wonderful, and drinks should be served cold. The soft drink industry benefitted enormously from this belief.

* Americans refrigerate things that other countries do not. In Australia, eggs are not refrigerated. But the USDA requires all eggs to be washed before sale, which removes a protective layer. People in other countries do not refrigerate ketchup, jam, fruit, or fresh vegetables.

Breakfast at the Office

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 10:00 PM PDT

I’ve just discovered the syndicated comic strip Real Life Adventures by Lance Aldrich and Gary Wise. It’s hilarious.

Maybe pancakes really are coming. The 76th Ferengi Rule of Acquisition says, “Every once in a while, declare peace. It confuses the hell out of your enemies.” This can be easily expressed as the well-known management principle: every now and then, be nice to your employees. That way, when you step on them, it takes them by surprise.

You haven’t heard of this leadership approach? Don’t worry. My organizational leadership book is forthcoming. Be sure to secure me for a seminar or on-site consultation.

9 SNL Movies That Were Never Made

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 09:00 PM PDT

No matter how popular the characters are, it's hard to take a two-minute sketch and stretch it into a two-hour feature film. Saturday Night Live specializes in putting strange characters on stage and letting them loose for a minute or two with ridiculous dialogue, and bringing those characters back for more. However, movie demand action, which means changing the familiar setting. Sometimes it works and produces a wonderful movie. But for every Blues Brothers or Wayne's World, there is also a movie like It's Pat, The Coneheads, or A Night at the Roxbury.

The successes lead writers and producers to want to repeat the process, while the failures make everyone skittish. Some sketches get as far as a script, but many were shot down even earlier. Often it was because of other recent SNL movie failures, but the movie that scuttled the planned 1993 Hans & Franz film was Arnold Schwarzenegger's. The Governator was supposed to co-produce the project. Kevin Nealon said,

“Yes, we wrote a musical! Hans & Franz: The Girly Man Dilemma. I wrote it with Conan O'Brien, Robert Smigel, and Dana Carvey. Arnold Schwarzenegger was co-producing with us, and he was going to star in it. We got it written, sold it to Sony. But I think Arnold got cold feet.”

In a 2010 interview with the A.V. Club, Smigel said that the problem really came down to the box office bomb that was Last Action Hero, saying “That movie came out and it was a failure and I was told by his agent that Arnold decided [adopts Schwarzenegger voice], ‘I will never be myself in a movie again! It can’t be done, this is the proof. I can’t play myself in a movie, automatic failure.’”

Hans & Franz was far from the only rejected movie idea. Read about the others at mental_floss. What was your favorite movie that came from a Saturday Night Live sketch? And which ones have you seen that are just horrible?

Snow White's Apple Teapot

Magic Mirror on the wall, what's your favorite Disney film of them all? Snow White? Why come and celebrate Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Drawfs. Enjoy a lovely spot of tea and perhaps just a tiny slice of apple pie. It is apple pie and tea that make the menfolks' mouth water. At least that's what the little old woman in the woods claims.

This beautiful collectible teapot is made of ceramic. Look carefully, the vessel is subtly shaped like an apple. Cheerful scenes from this 1937 classic animated film adorn the sides.

Strawberry-Flavored Cheetos

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 08:00 PM PDT

(Photos: Jeremy Hall)

In 2008, it was possible to acquire in Japan real, licensed Cheetos that had been dipped in a strawberry flavored coating. And what was that coating made of? Let’s not ask questions that we don’t want answers to.

I can readily imagine eating them with a bowl of strawberry ice cream. Jeremy Hall, who took the two photos above, renders this verdict: “I feared for the worst, and thus wasn't disappointed when these turned out to be awful.” That’s a commendable attitude to take for both eating and dating.

These would have been a fine addition to our list of 12 Weird Cheetos Variants, particularly if made into Cheetos marshmallow treats.

Zombie Brains Jello Shots

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 06:00 PM PDT

When you bite open these little brains, you'll find they are filled with delicious but frighteningly red raspberry sauce! If you serve a full platter of them, be sure to cut one open to show your guests what they are in for. The presentation makes all the difference!

The gelatin is flavored with hazelnut and raspberry liqueur in addition to vodka, which both lend a bit of authentic coloring to the condensed milk-colored gelatin. The raspberry filling can be homemade, as the recipe is included, or you can take the shortcut of using raspberry pie filling.

A little raspberry syrup drizzled over the top completes the look. Just pretend you are a zombie, for which brain-eating comes natural. These will work for your premiere party for The Walking Dead next weekend, or for any Halloween party. The complete instructions are at WikiHow. -via Buzzfeed

Roll Tide Volkswagen

A crimson tide sweeps across the driveway, thanks to this customized modern Volkswagen beetle showing the elephant mascot of the University of Alabama. I'm not sure who made this car, but I suspect that it's owned by Ray, the operator of Tide Rides and owner of a vast collection of University of Alabama collectibles.

Do you see the football helmet in that background? I suspect that it is Ray's motorized football helmet, which moves at a surprisingly quick pace:

If you disapprove, then keep your mouth shut about it while in Alabama. You'll be punished cruelly.

Now, it they wanted to name him after a toy, they should have gone with Superball instead of Domino, don't you think? -via Arbroath

China Bans Teenage Romance

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Ah, school. The hormones, the drama, the young love ... But not in China!

Recently, a few Chinese middle and high schools have gone to great lengths to discourage romance in the student body. They want to nip young love in the bud.

According to the BBC, a school in Hangzhou has decreed that boys and girls should maintain a minimum distance of half a meter (about one and half foot) from each other at all times. Boys and girls are also not allowed to walk in pairs. Another school has banned "close interaction" - whatever that means, since the school didn't define it - and threatened students with "severe" discliplinary action for violating the ban.

The Chinese regard teenage romance as something undesirable, calling it Zao Lian, which literally means "early love" but in essence it denotes immature love.

Schools and education authorities are increasingly bombarding young people with information on the "undesirable effects" of Zao Lian.

There are entire websites dedicated to the issue of how to avoid the lure of the opposite sex and focus attention on study. Schools in China also run sex education courses.

Both teachers and parents believe that young people in schools must not deviate from learning and must concentrate on studies to lay a good foundation for building a future.

Well, China didn't get to be 1.35 billion people without a little love, so the reaction to the schools' ban on young love has been swift and brutal. Some are outraged whereas others poked fun at the ban on China's social media and blogs. They've also pointed out that the banning teenage romance is probably futile anyhow.

POLL: But the central question remains: Should school try to discourage romance in its student body?

  • Yes - Teenage Romance Should be Banned
  • No - School Has No Business Banning Young Love

Long-lost Doctor Who Episodes Found

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT

In the 1960s and '70s, the BBC lost 106 episodes of the TV series Doctor Whoin an effort to clean house and make space. These episodes were from the earliest part of the series, in which actor William Hartnell played the first Doctor, and Patrick Troughton played the second. It was thought that the film was destroyed and the episodes were permanently lost.

But now those films have been found -in Ethiopia! The original tapes had been sold to the the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency after being aired just once. Now the BBC is negotiating the return of those episodes, and hopes they may be back in the UK in time for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary celebration.

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was no market for home video. In fact, the concept did not exist. Even more, few TV programmers could envision a time in which decades-old TV shows would be used to fill hundreds of round-the-clock TV channels. But to legions of Doctor Who fans, the return of the missing episodes is an exciting chapter in the history of the science fiction series. Here's a list of the missing episodes.

There's no word yet on how soon they will be available for illegal download. -via Digg

Mr. Chemex: The Eccentric Inventor Who Reimagined the Perfect Cup of Coffee

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT

The Chemex Coffeemaker is trendy, but it's not new. Dr. Peter Schlumbohm developed it more than 70 years ago! Schlumbohm patented more than 300 devices during his lifetime, making appliances that were simple, functional, and beautiful.

Schlumbohm developed his products by stripping appliances down to their essentials and making them work better. In the vein of modern inventors like James Dyson, Schlumbohm didn’t overload his creations with a jumble of new features—he reshaped the industries he entered through the sheer force of innovative elegance. Maybe that’s why the Chemex still feels so fresh; in a world of overly complex and smirking technology, the Chemex remains a quiet anomaly.

Read more about Schlumbohm and his philosophy of design at Collectors Weekly.

When An Eagle Takes Down A Deer

Posted: 06 Oct 2013 07:00 AM PDT

At one point or another, you've probably been to a buffet and took way more food than you could ever consume. But humans aren't the only ones who sometimes find that their eyes are bigger than their stomachs. That's precisely what this golden eagle found when he tried to scoop up a full-sized deer.

He may not have gotten far, but amazingly, he actually was able to take down the deer, as its carcass was discovered only a few yards away from where this picture was taken -half eaten by the eagle. Back in 2004, researchers found one that had taken down a brown bear cub, so this outrageous behavoir isn't unheard of.
