1. Time Warner Cable first distributor to license TV Everywhere content from Discovery


Discovery Communications (Nasdaq: DISCA) is finally launching TV Everywhere content, announcing a deal Monday with Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) that includes "authenticated access to Discovery content in the near future."

Discovery CEO David Zaslav told analysts on Oct. 31 that the programmer was close to signing its first carriage deals that included access to multiplatform content. "What will most likely happen, because we're supportive of TV Everywhere, is as we do renewals in the future, if we get the right value, we'll do it," Zaslav said on Discovery's third-quarter earnings call.

TWC and Discovery didn't say if authenticated subscribers would be able to watch full-length programs from Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and other networks through mobile apps and websites from Discovery, or whether TWC would be able to add Discovery content to its TWC TV app.

"Our customers will continue to enjoy Discovery's networks, in addition to a robust VOD experience, and we look forward to continually working with Discovery to provide more expansive out of home access to their content," TWC SVP of Content Acquisition Andrew Rosenberg said in a prepared statement.

In addition to carriage of Discovery's linear networks and TV Everywhere content, TWC and Discovery said the deal will give TWC subscribers access to video-on-demand programming from several Discovery-owned networks, including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, Science, Hub Network, Military Channel, Velocity, Discovery Fit & Health and Discovery en Español.

2. CNBC launches live streaming app for Comcast, AT&T, Dish, Verizon subscribers


CNBC said Monday that it launched a new app for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and iPhone that will offer a live feed from its cable network to subscribers of several major distributors, including Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), Cablevision (NYSE: CVC), AT&T (NYSE: T) U-verse TV, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) FiOS TV and Charter Communications subscribers.

The network hasn't yet reached deals with Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) or DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) which would allow their subscribers to watch CNBC anywhere with an iOS device, according to Variety. But it did announce deals with mid-sized providers, including Suddenlink, Mediacom and WideOpenWest.

The new CNBC app for iOS devices also offers access to on-demand versions of original series such as "The Suze Orman Show" and "Mad Money." CNBC said it is also developing an Android version of the app.

3. Mediacom to deploy Pace MG1 gateway with TiVo interface


Mediacom Communications said Monday that it will soon deploy a media gateway from Pace (LSE: PIC.L) that runs TiVo's (Nasdaq: TIVO) user interface.

The MSO is using Pace's MG1 gateway, formerly marketed as XG1. The hybrid QAM/IP set-top, which is a generic version of the gateway that powers Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) Xfinity X1 platform, contains six tuners that can transcode QAM channels into IP video that can be delivered to multiple IP-connected devices in subscriber homes.

Mediacom began deploying TiVo's four-tuner Premiere Q DVR earlier this year. While it is opting to deploy the Pace gateway instead of TiVo's hardware, Mediacom said it will still use TiVo's whole-home software on the Pace devices.

Subscribers across Mediacom's footprint will get access to the MG1 later this month, including those on its systems in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Georgia and Florida, Mediacom said.

4. Sling expanding to Roku and Windows 8.1 devices


EchoStar's Sling Media subsidiary said it launched a channel on Roku's over-the-top video platform that allows pay TV subscribers to watch live programming and DVR content, and that it will introduce an app for Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Windows 8.1 devices in December.

Sling also introduced a new version of its software, SlingPlayer 3.0, which the company said is designed to be used by viewers who are watching content on TV and mobile devices at the same time. "SlingPlayer 3.0 turns the iPad into the first screen and second screen at the same time," the company said in Monday's announcement.

EchoStar has marketed its Sling place-shifting set-tops and mobile video apps directly to consumers, and last month it struck a deal with Arris (Nasdaq: ARRS) which makes the set-top vendor the exclusive distributor of Sling devices to pay TV distributors.

Sling's mobile video apps are currently available on Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android devices. Sling said its Windows 8.1 app will allow users to access content from Sling devices on the Microsoft Surface tablets, in addition to PCs and laptops.

5. Scripps promotes Page to GM of home category


Scripps Networks Interactive said Monday that it promoted company veteran Allison Page to GM of its home category, which includes HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country.

Page, who joined the company in 2001, reports to Kathleen Finch, who is president of the division. She has also worked previously at production companies that supply programming to Discovery, A&E and Lifetime.

"Allison has the right combination of innovative thinking and 'straight-from-the-trenches' expertise that will keep us focused on maintaining our current ratings trajectory," Finch said in a prepared statement.
