If you don't next year, maybe the problem isn't that mobile phones have become so smart. Maybe the problem is that the desk phone has stayed so dumb. "Desktop phones should be the smart ones because they are free of mobile constraints," writes industry analyst Dave Michels on UC Strategies. Plenty of available power, no antennae, room for a larger screen and so on. Most landlines don't take advantage of these options. Michels points to the Cisco DX650 "video endpoint" as a better model of what a desktop phone could be--a real hub for unified communications. The DX650 is Android-based and can run apps from the Google Play store, and offers its own APIs for third-party developers. The Fierce Take: Great point, and reminiscent of the Apple iPad launch. Critics scoffed, but tablets quickly became the fastest-adopted consumer device format in history. Seems the desktop is a missed opportunity--if the price point for better options can drop low enough. (Resellers currently list the DX650 north of $1,000 per unit, whereas $100 will get you a vanilla VoIP set.) Hong Kong's OpenStack cloud an 'onramp' for startups 3. What will the Open Compute Project mean for your data center? The Open Compute Project aims for more modular computing--such that you can buy exactly the capacity you need and nothing more--whether you're talking computation, power, storage or any other component. It's a two-year-old initiative that grew out of a Facebook's data center construction effort, but now includes vendor representation from AMD, Intel and many others. It makes Gartner's Top Ten Tech Trends list for 2014--but what's it all mean for the average Joe? Tom Brewster looks into the question and comes up with the answer 'not much' for the moment, unless the average Joe needs hyperscale computing needs. As the project's origin might suggest, the orientation is toward those with "epic" data center requirements. "We see Open Compute as being very interesting but largely focused around that hyperscale market," Gartner's Adrian O'Connell told Brewster. "In all likelihood there will be very little relevance in the short-term [for smaller businesses]." Rackspace (with its massive cloud hosting requirements) has indicated plans to take advantage of Open Compute specifications; smaller companies will be well-suited to await further developments. Long-term, though, the project may be worth keeping an eye on. For more: - read Brewster's article More on hyperscale computing: Is your data center about to fry some circuit boards? On being dense: Networks, data centers struggle to pack more punch per rack From the data center through the NOC to the wiring closet, every element of computing infrastructure faces increased demand. But companies would like to meet those demands without growing IT's physical footprint. So how do you squeeze more power, ports and CPUs into the same space? Arthur Cole takes up the question from a network perspective at Enterprise Networking Planet. Cole points to a report from Fast Market Research that says you won't be able to do the kind of resource switching intended in virtualized, software-defined environments without 10Gb Ethernet. "Networks are becoming increasingly intertwined with server and storage resources. This intertwining forces them to expand in lockstep with the broader data environment. In other words, the enterprise needs to increase network density not because it wants to, but because it has to," he writes. So high-throughput networks will naturally demand increased density of 10Gb ports per rack unit. Cole gives several product examples--including Extreme Networks' new rack unit (104 x 10Gb ports plus 32 x 40Gb ports for server connections) and Arista Networks' cabinet unit (2,000 x 10Gb ports and 512 40Gb ports). Meanwhile at Data Center Knowledge, Rich Miller looks at density in (no surprise) the data center, catching up on the evolving state of new Open Bath Immersion (OBI) cooling technology. The key in OBI products demonstrated thus far is a 3M-manufactured fluid called Novec, which has a low boiling point and which also condenses easily from gas back to liquid, making it easy to circulate for cooling purposes. OBI is still in the early stages of its development, but shows promise in allowing significantly greater computing density than can be achieved in air-cooled systems.
