Minson: TWC seeing increased wideband and broadband-only subscribers Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) is seeing an increased number of subscribers order wideband Internet tiers, along with customers who cancel pay TV service but keep a cable modem, CFO Arthur Minson said Wednesday at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecoms Conference in Barcelona. "We have seen about a 100 percent increase in the aggregate number of wideband subscribers that we have," Minson said, referring to TWC subscribers who take its 30, 50, 75 or 100 Mbps high-speed Internet tiers. "As people consume more, they're willing to pay more," he added. TWC counts 14.5 million total customer relationships, including pay TV, high-speed Internet and telephone customers. About 9 million subscribe to a bundle of more than one service, and TWC has 5.5 million "single-play" subscribers, Minson said. About 3 million of those single-play customers take a pay TV subscription, and 2.5 million are high-speed-Internet-only customers, Minson said. "I look at that entire group of single-plays as an area where we can go back and market to, and upsell," Minson said. He noted that about half of TWC's broadband-only customers buy a pay TV subscription from a competing provider, and that some terminated their pay TV subscriptions. When asked to describe the profile of a typical broadband-only customer, Minson said many of them are younger and live in multiple dwelling units. "In general they tend to move a little more… they tend to maybe live in more MDUs, which sort of implies a younger, more mobile customer," he added. Google Fiber launches subscriber acquisition push in Kansas City Google Fiber (Nasdaq: GOOG) launched a campaign aimed at boosting its subscriber count in the Kansas City area by the end of the year, announcing Wednesday that it will give new customers who order its 1-Gig Internet and pay TV service by Dec. 22 a free Nexus 7 tablet. "The tablet will eventually double as your Google Fiber remote, but we bet that you'll be able to find some other useful things to do with it in the meantime," Rachel Hack, Google Fiber Kansas City community manager, wrote in a blog post. She noted that Google may not be able to install its service in new homes until spring 2014. The promotion is available to all 180 Google "fiberhoods" in the Kansas City area, including those where deadlines have already passed for signing up for Google Fiber, Hack said. Google's move could help it compete with Kansas City incumbent Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), which recently kicked off a promotion with Samsung in which it is offering new subscribers free Galaxy tablets. Google is charging $120 monthly for its Internet and pay TV bundle, the same price it placed on Google Fiber when it launched in fall 2012. Verizon Wireless opens destination store at Mall of America Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) opened its first "destination store" at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., Wednesday. | Verizon opened a destination store at the Mall of America. | While the store features a display promoting joint pay TV and wireless products that Verizon markets through a partnership with Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA), the company isn't marketing its FiOS pay TV or Redbox Instant streaming video service at the store. "The idea of showing customers how they can utilize video on their devices is still an important concept. We will continue to evolve our video strategy," Verizon Wireless EVP and COO Marni Walden told FierceWireless reporter Phil Goldstein in an interview at a press event Verizon held at the Mall of America on Tuesday. The destination store features several zones that tout devices that can be connected to Verizon's LTE network. Verizon Wireless said it will soon open similar stores in Chicago, Houston and other cities. Verizon also operates FiOS retail stores in markets where it offers fiber-based pay TV and high-speed Internet service. A Verizon spokesperson didn't respond to a request for comment about whether Verizon also has a new retail strategy for its FiOS stores. LRG: Comcast, Charter, Verizon led broadband subscriber growth in Q3 2013 Broadband subscriber growth slowed in the third quarter, with 17 of the largest cable operators and telcos gaining about 520,000 net high-speed Internet subscribers, a decrease of about 10 percent compared to Q3 2012, Leichtman Research Group said Tuesday. Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) led cable operators in net high-speed Internet subscriber additions, gaining 297,000. It was followed by Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), which posted 98,000 net subscriber additions; Suddenlink (21,900); and WideOpenWest (16,000). Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC), which lost both pay TV and broadband subscribers during its dispute with CBS Corp. (NYSE: CBS), lost 9,000 broadband subscribers in Q3, including customers signed by its commercial division, LRG said. While telcos continue to grow fiber-based broadband subscribers, losses from their DSL businesses have impacted growth. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) led telcos in broadband subscriber net additions in Q3, picking up 56,000, LRG said. It was followed by CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), which gained 33,000, and Frontier, which had 26,500 net subscriber additions. "With top providers now having over 83.6 million subscribers, the broadband industry continues to grow, but at a slightly slower pace than a year ago," LRG President Bruce Leichtman said. Distributors, networks work to create TV Everywhere experience In today's spotlight, FierceOnlineVideo editor Josh Wein takes a look at the nascent TV Everywhere industry, which he argues is finally starting to take off. Aside from gaining the rights to programming and distribution agreements, Wein identifies the battle between distributors and networks, both of which are trying to create independent apps for their subscribers, as one of the main conflicts in TV Everywhere. "If distributors are successful in negotiating the rights for more out-of-home streaming, they'll eventually be able to offer what amounts to their full pay-TV lineup on any device, anywhere," Wein writes. "Meanwhile, networks are pushing their own branded apps so that when viewers power up their iPad or Roku, they interact only with the network's own app and content."
