For nearly a decade, most pay TV distributors have deployed DVRs containing two tuners and a maximum of 250 GB of storage space. But with the rollout of their respective Hopper and Genie DVRs in 2012, Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) and DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) forced rival cable operators and telcos to invest in new gear. Cox began deploying the Cisco hybrid video gateway this summer, and Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) launched X1, a super DVR manufactured by Pace (LSE: PIC.L), last year. But it's been mostly small and mid-sized cable operators such as Atlantic Broadband, WideOpenWest, BendBroadband and Buckeye CableSystem that have been the first to market super DVRs. While Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) and Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) FiOS TV have said they are testing new super DVRs, neither pay TV provider has deployed a DVR commercially that contains more than two tuners. And Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR) may have a new brand--Charter Spectrum--but the MSO still hasn't deployed a super DVR...continued Check out our full feature on the Web Read more about: DirecTV, Bendbroadband, Cablevision, WideOpenWest back to top | | Today's Top News 1. HBO first cable programmer to stream to Google Chromecast HBO said its HBO Go TV Everywhere app can now be accessed on Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Chomecast device, which allows subscribers using Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS or Android devices to mirror content from several applications they are viewing on a smartphone or tablet on an HDTV. HBO Go is the first cable programmer to integrate with Chromecast, which debuted in July. Costing just $35, Chromecast is about the size of a USB flash drive. It connects to the back of a TV through HDMI ports, and uses home Wi-Fi networks to link to smartphones and tablets. Chomecast also allows viewers to stream Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), YouTube, Hulu Plus and Google Play Movies on HDTVs. But pay TV distributors such as Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) don't yet support Chromecast with mobile apps such as Xfinity TV Go and TWC TV, so the device isn't yet something that could be used to replace cable set-tops. Jeff Bewkes, the CEO of HBO parent Time Warner Inc. (NYSE: TWX), has been one of the biggest proponents of TV Everywhere, and has pushed distributors to allow subscribers to access subscription video content on new devices and interfaces. In addition to iOS and Android mobile devices, HBO Go can also be accessed on connected TVs from Samsung, Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) Kindle Fire, and the Roku and Apple TV streaming video set-tops. Comcast develops method for dynamically extending wireless broadband reach Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) engineers are exploring how to eliminate wireless broadband "dead zones" by boosting the signals of Wi-Fi transmitters and connecting to 4G networks in areas that can't be reached by Wi-Fi, and even using data culled from social networks, emails and phone calls to determine where its subscribers will need access to the Internet, according to a patent application published today. Comcast states in the application, "For example, local office may search information included in an electronic communication (e.g., e-mail message, travel itinerary, hotel reservation, etc.) to identify information indicating that the user will be traveling to a particular location at a particular date and time (e.g., an email or IP phone call in which the user states, 'I will be driving to Kentucky tomorrow')." Comcast VP of Business Development Tom Nagel said earlier this month that the nation's largest cable MSO now offers subscribers more than 350,000 Wi-Fi access points. Comcast is also deploying new Wi-Fi gateways in subscriber homes that can transmit a second SSID capable of enabling neighborhood hotspots. The patent application details how the company could expand Wi-Fi coverage based on demand from subscribers, and use Wi-Fi and 4G networks from other providers in areas where it needs coverage. "In some embodiments, the coverage area of the wireless network may be extended by transferring service to another wireless network or, when multiple wireless networks are available, selecting one of the available wireless networks and instructing the user device to transfer service to the selected wireless network," Comcast states in the patent application. Comcast has filed some unique patent applications involving technology for expanding its Wi-Fi reach. In July, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office published a Comcast patent application that detailed how it may be able to place Wi-Fi transceivers on rental cars, buses, bicycles and even humans. The MSO's latest application, titled "Wireless Network Supporting Extended Coverage of Service," was filed in May 2012. The inventors named on the patent are Comcast engineers Frances Bevan, David Markowitz, Michael Rekstad, Jae Sim and Christopher Stone. Time Warner Cable rebrands regional news channels Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) said Wednesday that it is changing the names of its 16 regional news networks. All of the MSO's news networks will be called Time Warner Cable News, except its network in New York City, which will be called Time Warner Cable News NY1. Director of Digital Communications Jeff Simmermon said the brand will help subscribers identify the news networks with Time Warner Cable. "Our 24/7 news networks consistently rank among the highest viewed channels among our subscribers in many of these markets. Yet a recent customer survey showed that only 40 percent of our customers could identify Time Warner Cable as those news networks' parent company," Simmermon wrote in a blog post. Simmermon said the new brands would be rolled out in all TWC markets by the end of the year.
