Stay Warm without Freezing Your Assets Off
Stay Warm without Freezing Your Assets Off
Set in a world where seasons rule, last year's HBO "Game of Thrones" series features characters who ominously warn that "winter is coming." In Vermont, it's much the same: We're steeling ourselves for a wicked long spell of terminal cold. Up here, you can lose your shirt trying to stay warm. Fortunately, we're getting good at staying warm without going broke. And since energy = money, ideas like these light a sustainable fire no matter where you live.

7 Reasons I Turn to Friends Without Kids for Parenting Advice
7 Reasons I Turn to Friends Without Kids for Parenting Advice
Since having a kid, I find that I need advice. A lot. Rarely a week goes by without a, "What are these pink spots?" or "Why isn't he eating dinner?" or "Is it really normal that he sneaks into the kitchen to eat banana bread at 5am?" Though I have plenty of friends with kids, I've noticed that I've been turning to my child-free friends for advice first. Counterintuitive? Crazy? Well, here's why.

It's Not All in Your Head
It's Not All in Your Head
I read recently that memory starts deteriorating at the age of thirty, which means that mine has been going downhill for more than twenty years. It sounds pretty discouraging, but there are many ways to stem the tide of normal, age-related memory loss—quite different from Alzheimer's disease—from which everyone can benefit, whether you're thirty or eighty. And the best way to start is to take care of your body.

Pet Peeve
Pet Peeve
It's been six years, and the FDA is now so thoroughly vexed by the mysterious Case of the Junky Jerky, it's asking the public to help finger the perp. But solved or not, this hairy whodunit has already put a troubling truth about pet food on trial. Currently there are no FDA rules governing the production of pet foods. This may help explain the 31 pet food recalls so far this year. It remains largely up to us to protect our pooches and coddle our kitties.

Thanksgiving Crafts for Kids
With the holidays on the horizon, getting your home ready for the annual onslaught of company can seem a little daunting – especially if you have kids to keep busy as well. Best By vs. Common Sense: Understanding Food Expiration Dates
"Best By" vs. Common Sense: Understanding Food Expiration Dates
There's been a lot in the news lately about expiration dates on food, the most shocking of which comes from the Harvard Food Law and Policy Center reporting that $165 billion dollars worth of food is WASTED each year when people throw away food that's still good because the "Best By" date has come and gone. Expiration dates on food were never, nor are they presently, meant to be an indication of food safety. So whatever did our grandparents do before they had a date to tell them whether their food was still good?

Recipes We Love: Stuffed Sweet Dumpling Squash
If a vegetable can be described as "cute," then sweet dumpling squash is every bit as adorable as its name. Available throughout the autumn months, sweet dumpling squash is a relatively small winter variety whose size makes it perfect for stuffing and roasting. Our favorite chef, Andrea Todd, shares this simple recipe for Stuffed Sweet Dumpling Squash.

From our Blog:
Thanks for the Tips
Nation member "J" found our tips on cleaning the dishwasher very helpful: Thanks for the tips -- I could use those. I think the Beagle method might be the easiest way to clean the dishwasher, though. I love that picture - it reminds me very much of my dog, who always sneaks a lick no matter how carefully I watch him.

From Our Customers:
Great Multipurpose Spray
We love that "avod" has discovered how useful our Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner is: Says "Bathroom," when the label should read, "Kitchen, Bathroom, Floors, etc." A great multipurpose spray. The scent is not too overpowering. Let's face it-- [...] cleaners are usually accompanied by ridiculous perfumes. If I want a room to smell like a flower garden, I'll use some oils or a candle.
