Stuffing Waffles With Gravy Syrup

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 04:00 AM PST

We've previously discovered an odd array of foods you can prepare in a waffle iron, but we had no idea you could make pre-cooked stuffing into a waffle. If you're wondering why someone would squish stuffing into a waffle iron, then you probably aren't one of those who love the crispy edge bits of stuffing the most. For those that are, this is a great way to maximize your stuffing's crunchy edges. As for the topping, it's precisely what it looks like -gravy blended with maple syrup for a sweet, savory, moist topping for your crispy waffle stuffing.

Street Art: The Boatman

Posted: 17 Nov 2013 02:00 AM PST

Sam3 is a street artist based in Madrid, Spain. He’s most famous for his massive murals, some of which cover entire skyscrapers. He works heavily in black silhouettes. In an interview for UK Adapta, Sam3 explained that his art, like much of the lowbrow movement, is an effort communicate with people who are not artistic sophisticates:

Our society desperately needs new ways to face the dark and difficult near future. Art is the best way to reveal the hidden realities on the today’s way of life. I have always been fascinated by the ideas of symbols, something that contains more than one meaning and that says more than only one thing. All my work is filled with this sort of dualism, like a search mirror, where I try to reach a public that is not specialised.

This beautiful piece in Blanca, Murcia pictured above uses just black paint and proper spacing to create a convincing image of a man punting down a river.

Breaking Bad Alternate Ending

If you didn't think the way Breaking Bad ended, you now have an alternate show wrap-up. This is a featurette on the Blu-Ray version of one of the show's seasons. If you recall the series finale to the show Newhart, this will seem familiar, although the jokes are customized for Breaking Bad. -via reddit

Radiator Bicycle

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 11:00 PM PST

I can’t track down the origin of this sculpture, but I want to high-five the inventive artist responsible. Allegedly, it can be found in the Netherlands. One question: is it a very heavy bicycle with a non-functional radiator or a radiator fixed to the wall and attached to a non-functional bicycle?

In case you haven't found time to watch all the cat videos coming out of Russia, Ignoramusky has compiled the best into one for you. He titled it That's Why I Love Cats (volume 2). You can find volume one here. It's just the best parts of videos showing cats doing funny, confounding, and adorable things. -via Tastefully Offensive

Sit In Your Own Iron Throne

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:00 PM PST

Sure, you can buy a life-size, officially-licensed replica of the Game of Thrones Iron Throne, but that will cost you -$30,000 in fact. If you'd rather not throw down the yearly wage of many American workers just to geek out in your own living room, the balloon sculpture version is nice, but you can't really sit in it. That's why I suggest heading over to Instructables, where user flaming pele can show you how to make a functional Iron Throne with a plastic chair, foam insullation, yard sticks and a few other inexpensive home supply items. It's the next best thing to actually melting down the swords of your enemies.

Learn Math with LEGO

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 08:00 PM PST

Teaching fractions can be easier if you start with something a child is familiar with, like LEGO bricks. This introductory lesson is only good for the simplest fractions fractions based on a total of eight pips, but those are the ones they'll be using the rest of their lives to calculate parts of dollars and gallons (in America, that is). Seems like a genius idea to me, but I've never had LEGO bricks. Is this something schools and parents have been doing all along? -via Geeks Are Sexy

The Warcraft Wedding

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 05:00 PM PST

"Warcraft wedding" are two words that don't come to mind when we think about nuptials, but that's because for most of us, World of Warcraft is just a game. But for some, it's a bit more than that.

Kotaku reader Craig and his wife Zoe from Taiwan belong firmly in the second camp. For their engagement photo session, the duo dressed up as characters from Warcraft (Craig is King Varien Wrynn while Zoe cosplays as Tyrande Whisperwind).

Clam Was Really 507 Years Old

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 04:00 PM PST

Six years ago, we reported on a clam that was found to be over 400 years old. Scientists named the clam Ming, after the Ming Dynasty. Unfortunately, it did not get a name before it was dead.

Fast-forward to 2013. Scientists have now revised Ming's age to 507 years. James Scourse, of Bangor University in the UK, explains how they changed the dating.

The researchers determined Ming's age by counting the number of bands in its shell. This type of clam, the ocean quahog, grows a new band every year.

The 100-year age discrepancy resulted from the 2007 analysis examining a part of Ming's shell where some of the bands were so narrow they couldn't be separated from each other.

Scourse, a marine geologist, says that the new age has been verified against radiocarbon dating and is "pretty much without error."

However, in updating the story six years later, a misunderstanding arose. Many who read the story were under the impression that scientists killed the clam in order to find out how old it was. The truth is that the team collected about 200 clams from the North Atlantic and froze them for study. There was no reason to suspect one was the oldest found living creature on earth before they examined them in the lab. Ming wasn't any bigger than the others. High School Football Player is a 400-lb Running Back

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 03:00 PM PST

How do you stop a 400-lb running back rushing at you? The answer is simple: you don't.

Meet Tony Picard, a White Swan High School senior from Yakima, Washington, who may just be the biggest running back in the history of football. Picard, who at 6'4" and 400-lb is even bigger than famous football player William "Refrigerator" Perry of the Chicago Bears, started out as a lineman, but he was faster than one expected.

White Swan coach Andrew Bush once saw Picard play basketball and realized that the teen was agile in spite of his size. Bush switched him to running back and gave him a simple instruction: don't fumble.

"It's so much fun to have him go out [on the field] as a captain and see him shaking hands before the game," said Bush to Jack McNeel of Indian Country, "They're just kind of staring, like 'Oh my gosh, you've got to be kidding me!'" Bush added that most teams will sacrifice five guys to stop Picard, which left the rest of the White Swan team open to make plays.

10 Places You Can Go To Get Up Close With Your Favorite Animals

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 01:00 PM PST

Did you know that you can walk a cheetah on the beach of South Africa at the Cheetah Outreach education and conservation center? Or that you can hold hands with a chimp at the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Uganda? And these are only two of the great up close encounters you can have with animals as rounded up by The Daily Beast.

Unfortunately, the list does leave out my personal favorite experience -eating breakfast with a giraffe in your hotel room at the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. It can't get much better than that.

If Premier League Team Names Were Based On Their Logos

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST

In the US, sports team logos are usually straightforward, if sometimes over stylized, showing the animal or whatever the team is named. But in England, football/soccer teams are just named by their city, and logos often resemble coats-of-arms. Buzzfeed took a look at Premier League pro football logos and renamed the teams to describe what is actually seen. Arsenal makes perfect sense, and Hull City gets a great new team name, but most of them are just insane. Shown here is the logo for Chelsea.

Old Sow--The Sarlacc of Canada

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST

(Photo: Atlas Obscura)

The Saint Croix River forms part of the boundary between the US state of Maine and the Canadian province of New Brunswick. The river empties into Passamaquoddy Bay, where it encounters a strong Atlantic current. Where the two opposing currents meet--slightly over the Canadian side of the sea border--you can find Old Sow. It’s the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western hemisphere.

Depending on the weather and the sea, Old Sow can be as large as 250 feet across and have a 12-foot drop down its Sarlaac-like mouth.

(Image: Lucasfilm)

You can visit, but you should ask local boatmen when it’s active. Old Sow is a tidal whirlpool, so it appears only during the right tidal conditions. If you take the ferry from Deer Island, New Brunswick to Eastport, Maine, you may get a good look at it. You can also take a boat and earn an official certificate from the Old Sow Whirlpool Survivors’ Association.

I'm Living Like I'm In the Victorian Era

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 09:00 AM PST

Sarah Chrisman was enamored with the Victorian lifestyle since she was a child, and wanted to live in a an old home with polished woodwork. She did not grow out of that obsession; but grew up to live it. She even married a historian who shares her interest in living an anachronistic life.

Not that the course of true love ever has run smooth. We collected antique clothing and although with patience it was possible to find suits which fit my husband's measurements, for me there seemed no hope. Victorian women's clothing, of course, was always made to the measurements of a corseted body, and my natural waistline was anything but that.

When my husband gave me my first corset as a gift for my 29th birthday, I had extreme doubts -- but then, love makes us all do things we would never have expected. There was something enchanting about the image the first time I saw my corseted form in a mirror's silvered glass, as if that figure had at last banished the hex of modernity. I altered my modern clothes to fit my new form and soon I started making replicas of my Victorian clothes to wear every day, doing away with the modern garments altogether.

Now we live in a house which was built in 1888,[ in the historic district of Port Townsend, Washington, a city which prides itself on being one of America's few remaining Victorian seaports. The corner grocery where I buy my milk first opened its doors in 1895.

In an article at XOJane, Chrisman lets us in on more details as she gathers the trappings and practices of 19th century life, like using the shampoos and inks of the era. She and her husband Gabriel are fashion historians, and she's written a book about their lifestyle.

The Jell-innium Falcon

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 08:00 AM PST

She may not look like much, but she tastes great where it counts. Actually, she looks pretty great too. justJENN Recipes made this fantastic Millennium Falcon replica out of nothing but gelatin mix, condensed milk, black dye and water cooled in a great Star Wars mold.

Best of all, you can make your own with the recipe if you happen to get one of those molds, but the most important and difficult part seems to be gently loosening the dessert from the mold so it will not rip or otherwise deform the ship.

If you want to make this a boozy Millennium Falcon, I suggest adding in some vodka and a swirl of Kaluha (that way it will look liks a bit of dirt on the ship) to make a White Russian Jell-o mold.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 16 Nov 2013 07:00 AM PST

Really? We're halfway through November? Some people call this month Movember, which is (I think) short for Mustache November. The entire month is dedicated to men's health, particularly prostate and testicular cancer, with the custom of growing a mustache as a way to raise awareness. You can find lots of information about the campaign at the Movember website. More than two weeks in, how's your mustache coming along? Don't feel bad, more than half the population can't grow one at all! But we've got plenty of reasonable facsimiles at the NeatoShop. Meanwhile, let's go over the highlights of this past week here at your favorite blog.

John Farrier told us about The Indian Stream Republic--A Little Nation on the US-Canadian Border. It's the first I'd ever heard of it.

Eddie Deezen answered the question Why Were There Two Darrins on Bewitched?

Uncle John's Bathroom Reader gave us Here is Your War, a Veterans Day remembrance of Ernie Pyle.

The Eager Pursuit of Sloths came from the Annals of Improbable Research.

Mental_floss magazine contributed The New Kings of Disguise. Which are cephalopods.

Artist Chow Hon Lam showed us a clever set of illustrations of Super Heroes and their Part Time Jobs.

Over at Homes and Hues, we had some neat posts like The Best Star Wars Furniture That Imperial Credits Can Buy.

In the What Is It? game, the unknown object was actually tool is for cutting off the top of the shell of a soft boiled egg. As for your funny and clever answers, it seems most readers had the same first impression (shame on you). The first to bring it up, so to speak, and the funniest, was Matthew Hubbard, who had this funny answer: "It is a "tool" used by Fathers to insure their daughters are safe when a young man came to call. The Father would sit in the living room destroying zucchini with the tool while discussing the "date plans" the young man had for his daughter. While technically illegal, most fathers will support other fathers in the community with an alibi, should the need arise." Sadly, he did not select a t-shirt. The other funniest answer was from Lucas Gentry, who had a reason for this tool's minimalist appearance: "It's a medieval orange-juicer. It did the same job as modern juicers, but the modern juicers looked too wimpy next to the iron maiden, so they used this bad boy." That's certainly worth a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Thanks to everyone for playing this week. See the answers to all the mystery objects of the week at the What Is It? blog.

This week's Conceptis puzzle was Basic Logic Fill-a-Pix.

The puzzle from Pzzlr this week was Let's Shake On It.

Hy Conrad's Whodunit was titled The Missing Link. Pretty soon, we'll see a new protagonist introduced into the Whodunit series!

The post with the most comments was Deny You Are Human with Shreddies, followed by Take Any Number ... and High-Tech Prostate Exam Simulator.

The comment of the week was from Peawatt, who responded to Shreddies with: "Oh how silly and expensive. Why can't you just fill an old tube sock with aquarium charcoal like the rest of us do?"

The most popular post was Grant Snider's comic A Year of Parenting. In second place was Why Were There Two Darrins on Bewitched? andHigh-Tech Prostate Exam Simulator came in third.

The post that people hearted most was A Remembrance Day Funeral with A Sailor’s Dying Wish, as runner-up. Common and Downright Likely Winter Hazards and An Interview with Allie Brosh tied for third place.

The most emailed posts were A Year of Parenting and Russian Police Choir Sings Get Lucky.

Our biggest post on Facebook this week was A Year of Parenting, although High-Tech Prostate Exam Simulator got enough likes to achieved that title in any other week. Did You Know That Blockbuster Once Had a Chance to Buy Netflix for a Mere $50 Million? had the most Tweets. The most-pinned post on Pinterest was Delightfully Geeky Paper Quilling, and His Master's Voice was the most-shared post on Google+. Thanks for all the Tweets, Likes, Pins, and Shares!

At the Neatoramanauts Facebook page, you'll find lively discussions on a range of subjects, like what you love and hate most about your job. And you can contribute your own posts! Sarah ZombieBacon Campbell sent us a picture of the t-shirt she got from the NeatoShop. We love seeing those, even if you do use flash in a mirror!

But be sure to come back here, where there's always something new. Have a great week!
