I recently had the privilege of attending the annual Alcatel-Lucent Technology Symposium. Along with a fascinating tour of Bell Labs (News - Alert) which allowed press and analysts a rare peak into the future of things like quantum computing, work on a lens-less camera a host of other really cutting edge R&D on things optical and wireless, it was a chance to hear in detail the rationale behind the company’s much-publicized “The Shift” plan.  This is the reorganization roadmap put forth by new CEO Michel Combes aimed at turning Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) (ALU) from equipment generalist into specialists in key growth markets including Ultra-broadband, software defined networks (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV), and all things relating to next generation wireless.

While the two-day event went into explicit details about the restructuring and repositioning, what caught my attention were the opening remarks of CEO Combes. In a rare opportunity to hear first-hand from the architect of the strategy, Combes clearly articulated his views on why the shifting nature of our industry speaks to the rationale behind his plans for shifting the emphasis and resources of the company.

Turning Points: Mapping ALU’s Future

The title of Combes talk was the one in the subheading above.  He led off with the provocative assertion that what he and his team were looking at went beyond the three years of The Shift.
