Today's Top News

1. AT&T drops horse racing network TVG from U-verse TV lineup

After failing to agree to terms for a contract renewal, AT&T (NYSE: T) said it decided to drop horse racing network TVG from its U-Verse TV lineup.

The move will see TVG lose distribution in several markets, including Louisville, Ky., home of Churchhill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. TVG, which allows cable and satellite TV subscribers in several states to place bets online and through cable set-tops, is still carried in Louisville by DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV), Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH) and Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC). The MSO picked up the Louisville system as part of its $1 billion cash acquisition of Insight Communications last year.

"Despite our good faith efforts to negotiate and reach an agreement to renew, and to fully resolve an outstanding compliance issue, we were not able to reach mutually beneficial terms and no longer have the rights to carry the content," AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said in a prepared statement.

Siegel declined to comment when asked to explain the compliance issue referred to in the statement.

AT&T said it still continues to offer U-verse TV subscribers rival horse racing network HRTV. Formerly known as TV Games, TVG debuted in 1999. It has offered cable operators a cut of the fees subscribers pay to place wagers.

Rovi (Nasdaq: ROVI), which was then known as Macrovision, sold TVG to Betfair Group in 1999. The interactive program guide technology vendor had picked up TVG as part of its acquisition of Gemstar-TV Guide International.

2. Time Warner Cable targets 'cord nevers' with $30 basic HBO bundle

Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) confirmed that it is beginning to offer subscribers a $29.99 monthly subscription bundle that includes local broadcast channels and HBO.

The MSO is targeting "cord nevers" – young consumers who have never subscribed to pay TV – with its "Starter TV with HBO" package. But it will also likely look to upsell customers that take the package to more expensive programming tiers that include expanded basic networks ranging from ABC Family to USA Network.

Time Warner Cable has stepped up its focus this year on luring new subscribers with low-cost programming and broadband packages, and relying on customer service representatives who are trained in upselling subscribers to pitch additional services. TWC also recently launched a promotion with Samsung in which it is offering new customers a free Samsung tablet.

In addition to local broadcast channels carried in basic cable tiers, TWC's "Starter TV with HBO" package includes QVC, ShopNBC, HSN and public, educational and government (PEG) channels.

TWC's move follows the launch in October of a Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) trial that offers subscribers a package that includes high-speed Internet access and HBO. Comcast is charging $40 to $50 monthly for that tier, depending on the market.

3. DirecTV loses ABC, Fox affiliates in Massachusetts

DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) said that it lost the feeds for ABC and Fox affiliates that cover the Springfield, Mass., market, after its retransmission-consent contract with Gormally Broadcasting expired on Sunday.

While DirecTV's contract had expired in October, the company had reached temporary extensions with Gormally, which is demanding increased fees for its stations.

DirecTV hasn't responded to a contract proposal that Gormally sent the company on Friday, according to a statement that owner John Gormally posted online Tuesday.

"DirecTV has opted to discontinue discussions over the weekend despite our repeated requests to talk and work things out," Gormally wrote.

DirecTV spokesman Tom Tyrer told local newspaper The Republican on Monday that the satellite TV provider is continuing to negotiate a deal with Gormally. "Unfortunately we can't report that this is resolved or about to be resolved. This will be settled, they always are settled," he added.

4. AT&T launches interactive weather app on U-verse TV

AT&T (NYSE: T) said Tuesday that it launched a new interactive weather application for U-verse TV subscribers.

The telco said it developed the service, called The Weather Channel app, internally. The app uses data supplied by The Weather Channel. It's available in standard definition in U-verse channel 225, and the high-definition version runs on channel 1225.

AT&T also offers subscribers an interactive application called Weather On Demand, which uses data supplied by The Weather Channel rival AccuWeather. It will continue to carry Weather On Demand on U-verse TV, a spokeswoman said.

In addition to offering subscribers local weather information, AT&T said the app offers national forecasts and allows viewers to add weather forecasts from up to five additional cities.

5. MSG recruits Billy Joel to perform monthly concerts at Garden

Madison Square Garden Co., which is controlled by Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) CEO Jim Dolan, said Tuesday that it signed a deal which will see rock legend Billy Joel perform monthly at its Manhattan arena indefinitely.

It's a huge score for the company, which also owns regional sports network MSG and the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty WNBA team. Dolan called Joel MSG's "fourth franchise" at a press conference Tuesday morning.

MSG, which announced in September that it was exploring the sale of music video network Fuse, said Joel will kick off his monthly concert series at Madison Square Garden in January.

"This new partnership will ensure that someone who has been such an important figure in our past, will also be a major part of our future. We welcome Billy home and look forward to many unforgettable nights of music at the Garden," Dolan said in a prepared statement.

MSG didn't disclose terms of its contract with Joel.
