Presenter: Adam Andreassen, PsyD

With the 2013 publication of the DSM-5 comes much uncertainty, handwringing, and controversy. The new manual is the product of a 12 year revision process and includes many philosophical and diagnostic revisions. This presentation will focus on summarizing the specific diagnostic changes, identifying philosophical adjustments, and clarifying likely short and long-term implications for patients, clinicians, and administrators. The workshop will also briefly focus on current controversies surrounding the DSM-5 and discuss the potential impact on its use and adoption in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to -

  1. To summarize key diagnostic criteria changes in the DSM-V from the DSM-IV-TR.
  2. To provide a working understanding of philosophical shifts and adjustments in the DSM-V compared to the DSM-IV-TR.
  3. Briefly identify the process of research and empirical foundation underlying the DSM-V creation.
  4. Acquaint participants with current issues and controversies associated with DSM-V publication.
  5. Explore and summarize important practical considerations and adjustments relative to adoption of the DSM-V.
