Celebrate the Holidays with History When the trees are sparkling and the window displays enticing, the Freedom Trail® Foundation joins revelers to celebrate the season with the annual Historic Holiday Stroll. While Christmas was not widely celebrated during the American Revolution in Boston, visitors may now enjoy Boston's festive atmosphere on this merry 90-minute tour offered Thursday through Sunday at 3:30 pm now through January 2014. Led by a costumed tour guide dressed in 19th century Dickensian garb, visitors learn how holiday traditions evolved in Boston while experiencing highlights of the American Revolution. The tour concludes with the chance to warm your bones with hot chocolate, tea, or wine and Boston Cream Pie at the historic Omni Parker House. Following the Stroll, guests enjoy 10 - 20% discounts off museum store purchases at Freedom Trail® sites, including the Old South Meeting House, Old State House, Paul Revere House, and Old North Church (valid with any Freedom Trail® Foundation tour receipt from November through February). This special Freedom Trail® Historic Holiday Stroll is offered to the public Thursday through Sunday and may also be booked as a private family or group tour (perfect for company outings). Beginning at the ArtsBoston Bostix Booth at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Stroll tickets are $29 for adults and $19 for children and include a $1 donation to the Freedom Trail Foundation's Preservation Fund. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance. The Foundation also offers daily public Freedom Trail walking tours at 11:00 am and 12:00 noon throughout the season; an African-American Patriots Tour that tells the stories of black Bostonians who played an integral part in the Revolution on Saturday and Sunday in February at 12:45 pm; as well as a Historic Pub Crawl on Tuesdays at 5:30 pm - all about fermenting revolution in Boston's 18th century drinking establishments, which must be booked by reservation. For reservations, please call (617) 357-8300.
Foundation Mourns the Loss of Player and Friend, Bob Jolly The Freedom Trail® Foundation is deeply saddened to report the loss of Bob Jolly. Bob, known on the Trail as "Nathaniel Balch," hatter and friend to John Hancock, was a beloved guide at the Freedom Trail® for over seven years, and a fixture in Boston's history and tourism community for over a decade. Bob was born Jan. 2, 1953 in Baton Rouge, LA, the son of Dr. Henry W. and Jane (Conway) Jolly. He was named for his grandfather, E.A. "Bob" Conway, former Louisiana Secretary of State. Bob grew up in Baton Rouge, attending Catholic High School, and graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL in 1975. He also studied in the graduate Theater Department at Louisiana State University. Bob was a well-known and much-loved actor on Boston stages, and a premiere interpreter of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, as a director and in performances of the comic "patter" roles. He worked with the Publick Theater, Lyric Stage Company, American Classics, Improbable Players, Emerson Stage, Boston Playwrights, New Ehrlich, and other companies in his 28-year career. His final performance was as Koko in "The Mikado" at Lyric Stage in September 2012. He won an IRNE Award "for consistent excellence" in 1997. His television credits include "Unsolved Mysteries," "American Experience," and "American Masters." Bob is survived by two sisters, Eugenia Saurage Jolly Goff of Asheville, NC, and Mary Etta Jolly Fizer and husband Rodney of Mount Blanchard, Ohio; a brother, H. William "Bill" Jolly and wife Margaret Rose (Losavio) of Baton Rouge, LA; a niece, Elizabeth Rose Jolly of Baton Rouge, and a nephew, Charles L. Hustmyre of Baton Rouge, and Marshall Williams of Woonsocket, RI, a close friend of 40 years, was by his side in the weeks before his death. Bob was laid to rest at the historic Mt. Auburn Cemetery in a procession led by a New Orleans-style jazz band on September 21. He is greatly missed by his friends, family, co-workers, and fans. We are saddened by our loss of such a wonderful man who was an integral part of Boston's visitor experience.
Want to Write for the Freedom Trail ® E-newsletter? The Freedom Trail® Foundation produces an e-newsletter seasonally to inform supporters of activities, events, and exhibits along Boston's historic trail! In an effort to offer readers more history, we're looking for short (500-1000) word articles to feature in each issue. Articles must be connected in some way to at least one Freedom Trail® site, and subjects relating to colonial, revolutionary, and early federalist periods will be strongly favored, though we are open to using pieces on subjects as late as the 20th century. Please send queries to mwilding@thefreedomtrail.org. Undergraduate and graduate students, independent scholars, and professional historians are encouraged to submit articles for unpaid publication.
