| Today, I’m pleased to share news of a groundbreaking scientific development that you can be a part of. Read this issue on the UCS website.
| Science—and scientists—face attacks every day. But you know that scientific facts are critical to working toward a healthy environment and a safer world. This holiday season, defend science by making a tax-deductible gift to the Union of Concerned Scientists.
 | | | | | | | Dear Friend, Powerful new research now documents that nearly two-thirds of carbon pollution can be directly traced back to carbon extracted from the earth by just 90 entities. And I bet you already know who's most responsible—Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Peabody Coal are all among the top producers, along with state-owned organizations such as Saudi Aramco. This new research can be a game changer in our efforts to reduce global warming emissions—but only if we work together to fully document the effects and damages of climate change and get the message out there. See below for how you can help.—Karla | | | Ask a Scientist | | Roberto Mera, Ph.D., Kendall Science Fellow in Climate Attribution | "How accurate are existing computer modeling techniques and can we be confident that they identify human activities as the primary cause of global warming?"—T. Fulmer, Lititz PA Climate scientists have made many improvements to computer models over the years that have increased their accuracy and reliability. These advances have allowed scientists to show, unequivocally, that human activities are the major driver of global warming. During the last five years, for example, climate scientists have made dramatic advances in their ability to track two key climate indicators—ocean heat content and Arctic sea ice seasonal cycles. Last month, in the shadow of Typhoon Haiyan’s destruction in the Philippines, UCS staff joined delegates from more than 190 nations in Warsaw, Poland, for the annual U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change negotiations. Countries provided the bare minimum needed to move forward on a climate deal and discussed limited, near-term actions to reduce global warming emissions. One shining light in the negotiations was work to reduce emissions from deforestation and tropical forest degradation where parties came together, worked through tough disagreements, and negotiated a program that will save forests, benefit forest communities, and reduce emissions.
