With the combination of a growing demand for faster broadband but a lack of competition to motivate Internet providers, local communities are taking it upon themselves to use whatever leverage they may have to lure new and existing ISPs on board the fiber movement.

A recent news post on the Muskogee Phoenix website revealed that the city of Muskogee, Okla. is set to undergo a public Wi-Fi initiative that will distinguish it from other cities when it comes to attracting economic development. As explained by Interim City Manager Roy Tucker, the Wi-Fi proposal, which is expected to become a reality during the next 12 to 48 months, is designed to increase the quality of life and educational opportunities of [its] citizens.

When it comes to ultra-broadband, cable MSOs have stayed out of the speed-race picture so far, preferring to linger around the 100Mbps mark for their top-end customers. Honestly, why bother when their competition largely consists of copper-bound telcos and limited fiber services that they can match handily? Consumers are poised to radically change the market, however, and the launch of DOCSIS 3.1 should give the sector an answer to any impending 1Gbps demand.

You may never have heard of a company called Level 3 Communications. It's headquartered in Broomfield, Colo., and it's the world's largest Internet backbone provider. The company's networking equipment is housed in 200 U.S. datacenters, 100 European datacenters and 14 Latin American datacenters. In other words, Level 3 controls much of the worldwide fiber optic cable system that makes up the Internet.

It's clear that there is a surge of interest in solutions that will protect against unwanted attempts to reach users' private information. The main source of this recent anxiety has been the National Security Agency (NSA) - which created controversy over its surveillance techniques and continues to sort through private information. Also, the NSA continues to bypass encryption used by many businesses and individuals. In fact, recent news reports claim the NSA spent billions of dollars on data surveillance over the recent decade.

Lightwave Logic, Inc recently announced that preliminary tests carried on a prototype SOH device covered with Lightwave's organic nonlinear electro-optical polymers could push the emergence of Silicon Photonics only Solutions. The 1-millimeter square SOH chip which was tested has opened up possible avenues for integration of advanced optical circuits within a single silicon substrate. Furthermore, the waveguide base was about 1/20 the size of an inorganic-based silicon photonics modulator waveguide.

The Q3 retail colocation revenues in EMEA have grown 10 percent from 2012 to reach almost $1.5 billion, says a new data from Synergy Research Group.
