Microsoft May Drop Licensing Fees for Windows Phone, Windows RT

Microsoft (News - Alert) is not known to shake things up; on the contrary, the company is often considered behind the times precisely because of its refusal to take drastic steps forward with the times. An excellent example of this is Windows Phone (News - Alert), which was considered late to the game by many when it hit the scene toward the end of 2010.

However, it’s clear that Microsoft has, to some degree, learned its lesson about changing with the times. Windows 8, for example, tried to embrace the mobile paradigm on desktops and tablets alike. Although this move was widely met with disdain, it is a big step for Microsoft. Besides, it seems Microsoft has learned another lesson from the Windows 8 fiasco: How to listen to its users.

All of this change from a company best known for its resistance to change seems to be just the beginning, though, if what The Verge says is true.

For one thing, the rumored “Threshold” update that is expected to further unify Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone may also bring back the Start menu as it used to be, while still offering desktop users more flexibility. More importantly, Microsoft may start giving out Windows RT and Windows Phone to device manufacturers for free. For Microsoft, this is about as big a change as ever, but also a necessary one.
