4 Movies and TV Shows That Lied Their Way Into Creation

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

Imagine Aqua Teen Hunger Force (or Aqua Something You Know Whatever) actually being a detective show like Scooby Doo only with more weird things occuring during the episode and the main characters being food instead of teens. That's pretty much what the show would have been like if the show actually stayed true to the creator's original pitch to the network. Fortunately, they never actually intended to follow through with that idea and the show has since evolved into the utterly bizarro mishmash it has become.

And that's only one of the many shows that were created thanks to a lie featured in this great Cracked article.

When the Actors in Planet of the Apes Donned Their Makeup, They Spontaneously Segregated Themselves

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

(Photo: 20th Century Fox)

Here's a fascinating story from the filming of the 1968 science fiction film Planet of the Apes. In that movie, there are 3 ape species: chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans. When the actors for the ape characters put on their makeup and costumes, they segregated themselves by species:

During the filming of Planet of the Apes in 1967, Charlton Heston noted “an instinctive segregation on the set. Not only would the apes eat together, but the chimpanzees ate with the chimpanzees, the gorillas ate with the gorillas, the orangutans ate with the orangutans, and the humans would eat off by themselves. It was quite spooky.”

James Franciscus noticed the same thing filming Beneath the Planet of the Apes in 1969. “During lunch I looked up and realized, ‘My God, here is the universe,’ because at one table were all the orangutans eating, at another table were the apes, and at another table were the humans. The orangutan characters would not eat or mix with the ape characters, and the humans wouldn’t sit down and eat with any one of them.

This Bunny Loves His Baths

Posted: 15 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

(Video Link)

What's more relaxing than a nice warm bath after a long, stressful day? Pretty much nothing, right?

Well, believe it or not, bunnies feel the same way...or at least, this bunny does -especially when they are paired with soft, gentle massages. Little Cloody here even fell asleep during this relaxing massage session.

While rabbits don't usually need help bathing because, like cats, they clean themselves. Cloody certainly loves his occassional bath time and you can tell just by looking at this bundle of relaxation.

You Are Being Watched

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST

There are now cameras everywhere. So you can't just roll out of bed, put on sweat pants and drive to the McDonald's anymore. There are people there who will judge you. So you have to impress them by putting on a fedora that matches your sweatpants.

We wanted flying cars. We wanted robot girlfriends. This isn't the future that any of us, including Kris Straub of Chainsawsuit, wanted.

Old Phone Booths Converted Into Beautiful Aquariums

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 09:00 PM PST

Now that everybody and their grandmother has some sort of cellular phone most people no longer have any use for public phones, let alone the metal and plastic armor shells we call phone booths.

So what are we to do with these big metal blights on our urban cityscapes? Benedetto Bufalino and Benoit Deseille have a great idea of how to repurpose phone booths- they turn them into giant aquariums.

Now the street corners get a bit of colorful life, the phone booth avoids ending up in the scrap pile, and the fish get a giant box to swim around in, to the delight of passersby.

The Deep Fried PBR Burger

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST

We've talked about Philadelphia's PYT burger restaurant before as they have made a name for themselves by serving spaghetti burgers, deep fried Twinkie burgers and a deep fried lasagna bun burger. Now they're at it again, serving up burgers that are actually topped with deep fried beer in their Beerger. That's right -not beer batter, but frozen PBR wrapped in wontons and crushed pretzel breading and deep fried. The burger has so much beer that the restaurant will actually card you before you order it.

Profile Info

Have you read the new TOS (terms of service) for Facebook or Google? Since they have a wealth of users, they are leveraging those profiles for advertising purposes. You can allegedly opt out of Facebook, and Google has an opt-in step, but who knows who else is out there waiting to use your personal information to sell things. Randall Munroe at xkcd knows how to get around all that no matter what small print you neglected to read.

Comedic Animated Short- Reaping For Dummies

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST

(Video Link)

When the cold bony hand of Death falls upon your shoulder, most people simply accept the end and give up the ghost. But a select few of these departed souls are chosen to carry on the tradition, and a new generation of reapers are born.

One such reaper newbie finds himself hunting a pesky soul across the Old West in this CG animated short entitled Reaping for Dummies. It’s yet another great looking student film, created by students from Idefagskolen in Tonsberg, Norway, and with many of the big animation studios experiencing financial setbacks the next generation of 3d filmmakers look like they're ready to take over.

Awesomely Intricate Rivendell in LEGO

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST

Alice Finch (previously at Neatorama) and David Frank have created a replica of Rivendell, the Elvish realm ruled by Elrond in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. The work contains over 200,000 LEGO bricks!

Their research involved watching the movies frame by frame and examining a Rivendell model that was made by Weta Workshop in New Zealand. Then came experimental builds for each of the components, from horses to windows to water. The finished work is 10 feet by 5 feet. Read about how they did it (even though the two artists live an hour apart) and see plenty of pictures at The Brothers Brick. -via Gamma Squad

Cocktail Recipe: Smaug's Breath

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 04:00 PM PST

Smaug from The Hobbit has a fiery breath, but maybe he can put it to good use by lighting this cocktail from The Drunken Moogle. To make your own, you'll need Goldschläger, which is a type of cinnamon-flavored schnapps, Fireball Cinnamon Whisky, a splash of grain alcohol and a bit of flame.

Burglar Left Hanging

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

A Mr. Wilson of Howden, Yorkshire, England, went to bed on November 19th, leaving his bathroom window open so the cat could get in. When we awoke the next morning, he found more than cat came in- there was a burglar hanging upside-down in his bathroom, with his foot still stuck in the window! Daniel Severn asked the homeowner to call police, which he did. Crown barrister Mark Kendal explains what happened.

"As he approached the door he could hear moaning on the other side. As he opened the door he saw a man dangling inside his bathroom.

“One foot was trapped in the window. Daniel Severn’s head was resting on the toilet.

“The police were called and Daniel Severn remained where he was

“He told them his name and that he had been trying to ring the police himself because he had been stuck for over an hour.

“He had a shopping bag in his trousers. He told the complaint he was heroin addict looking for items to sell. He said he got his foot stuck climbing in the house.

“He had a mobile phone with a torch on it, but it had fallen in the bath. He had two pairs of gloves on so as not to leave finger prints and a Stanley knife.”

The court heard Severn had 80 previous convictions, but that he was not a very good criminal.

That would be my opinion as well. Severn pleaded guilty to burglary and drug charges and received a sentence of two years and four months. -via Arbroath

Elf Told in 8-Bit In 120 Seconds

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

(Video Link)

There seems to be something about Elf that makes people love it or hate it. You can count me among the many who love the movie and I certainly enjoy this 8-Bit Cinema take on the film.

If you haven't seen it yet, perhaps this 120 second take on the film can help you decide whether or not you actually would like the storyline. Of course, this animation does lack the delightful humor of Will Ferrell, which is exactly what makes the movie so fantastic.

21 Fascinating Things You Might Not Know About Mary Poppins

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

It's been almost 50 years since the Disney film Mary Poppins premiered, and Disney is getting a jump on the anniversary with Saving Mr. Banks, a film about Disney acquiring the rights to the book, coming out next week. That's not the only interesting story about the movie. Whether you were around when Mary Poppins was new, or you grew up with the home video version, you'll enjoy this list of trivial tidbits about the production. For example:

6. Julie Andrews agreed to make the film after she was rejected for the role of Eliza Doolittle in the film version of My Fair Lady.

Andrews’ had originated the role of Doolittle — to much critical acclaim — playing her on both Broadway and London’s West End.

Julie Andrews was considered a shoo-in for the film, but then-Warner Bros. President Jack Warner decided she was too much of an unknown to carry the film and cast Audrey Hepburn instead.

A year later, Andrews won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Mary Poppins, beating Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle. Take that, Warner Bros! Read the rest at Buzzfeed.

Artist Transforms Her Studio Into Fourteen Different Fantasy Landscapes

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

Artist Jee Young Lee just can’t seem to decide how she wants her studio to look, so she’s made the small workspace over in fourteen fantastic ways in her installation series Body Of Work.

From surreal dreamscape to full blown visual art installation to nightmare imagery cubicle, her re-imagined rooms are simply magical to behold, and to make sure we’re able to appreciate the glorious nature of each space she photographed each room and shared them with the world via the interwebs.

Jee created each scene by hand, and aside from a bit of color correction there is no photoshop involved in these incredible redesigns of an otherwise ordinary space.

Horrifying Early Images of the Michelin Man

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

(Images: Michelin)

The Michelin Man—the mascot for the Michelin tire company—is a happy, jovial fellow. He’s always been that way, but you may find early photos and illustrations of him scary.

His name is Bibendum. That’s a reference to a line by the Latin poet Horace, who said, “nunc est bibendum.” That means “now is the time to drink.” Michelin did not adopt this phrase in order to promote drunk driving, but to express that Michelin tires eat up obstacles on the road.

He doesn’t anymore, but Bidendum used to drink heavily, smoke cigars and wear pince-nez glasses. He was drawn gray when tires were usually gray in color, then black when tires were commonly black. You can see more early images of him here.

A LEGO Version Of The Last Of Us

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

(Video Link)

Naughty Dog Studio’s post apocalyptic video game The Last Of Us created quite a stir when it debuted this summer, due in part to the mature storyline, the horrific fungus faced creatures called Clickers and the gritty gameplay.

Since the debut artists of all kinds have drawn inspiration from the game, and now we’re finally presented with a LEGO version of the game thanks to animator Brian Anderson. While this is just an animated short and not an actual LEGO game, Brian does a really good job of capturing the dark essence of the game, and he really knows how to blow up those building blocks in style.

Google Buys Boston Dynamics

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Boston Dynamics, the company that develops new robots for DARPA and other military clients, has been acquired by Google. Now the biggest entity on the internet owns Atlas, Cheetah, PetMan, Big Dog, AlphaDog, WildCat, Sand Flea, RHex, and other terrifying robots.

Google confirmed on Friday that it had completed the acquisition of Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that has designed mobile research robots for the Pentagon. The company, based in Waltham, Mass., has gained an international reputation for machines that walk with an uncanny sense of balance and even — cheetahlike — run faster than the fastest humans.

It is the eighth robotics company that Google has acquired in the last half-year. Executives at the Internet giant are circumspect about what exactly they plan to do with their robot collection. But Boston Dynamics and its animal kingdom-themed machines bring significant cachet to Google’s robotic efforts, which are being led by Andy Rubin, the Google executive who spearheaded the development of Android, the world’s most widely used smartphone software.

Obviously Google is betting on automation as the wave of the future. What more evidence do we need that the company will soon will use its many robots to take over the world? Read more at the New York Times. -via Boing Boing

The Magical Wedding Unicorn

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

The other day we showed you the Beericorn -the unicorn-shaped keg dispenser featured at Erin and Shayne's wedding. But if it's possible to have something cooler than that, it's the flame-shooting, lemonade-peeing and glitter-snorting unicorn featured at Anna Schumacher's wedding

Sure, it might seem a little weird to drink the urine of a unicorn (or any creature for that matter), but when it's something this amazing, even drinking its urine can imbue you with the creature's magical powers. Or at least, that's what I would tell my self before drinking about 12 glasses of unicorn urine lemonade.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 14 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

Yeah, you should be out Christmas shopping today, but it's cold and you'd rather just read great articles and watch videos at Neatorama, right? I know I would. You've put in a long hard week at work, and you deserve some relaxing entertainment and edification. I'll help out by hitting the highlights of what you may have missed this past week at Neatorama.

Jill Harness brought us 14 Fantastic Pieces of Art Based on The Hobbit.

John Farrier collected Great Works of Girls und Panzer Fan Art for us.

He also told us about The Confederate Navy's Crazy Plan to Raid the Great Lakes. He's had a great series of historical geography stories lately -or would you call it geographical history?

Eddie Deezen wrote Frank Sinatra: The Ladies Man, in honor of what would have been the singer's 98th birthday.

The story of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue was from mental_floss magazine.

Plain Dressing, about the Amish and other plain groups, came from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us R.T. Grace's Patent Application Proposal.

We also has a Bathroom Reader list posted just last night in Hilarious Warning Labels.

Our weekly Pzzlr was called Rainy Dilemma.

The Conceptis puzzle this week was Hitori Light.

Our Whodunit was the tale of Crazy Kate.

This week's What Is It? game gave us a strange old object that turned out to be a loose coupler for radio reception. It was used as the primary tuning device in an early receiver. No one here knew that, but we had some funny answers to win a t-shirt! One goes to ladybugs, who said, "Want to surprise the person sitting next to you? The kinetic energy from this ambush style Jack-in-the-Box will spring the dowel out from the side and smack them." The other goes to Rubinsky, who had a funny (but long) description of how this was used to train Victorian circus mice -read it here. Congratulations! You'll see the answers to all this week's mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

We noticed you really like movie trivia lists. So far, we've found several of you, on Die Hard, Home Alone,Christmas Vacation, and even The Wizard of Oz, although it's not specifically a Christmas film. What other Christmas movies would you like to know more about?

The (non-giveaway) post with the most comments wasGreat Works of Girls und Panzer Fan Art.

This week's most popular post was Plain Dressing. In second place was 13 Weird and Terrible Christmas Ornaments, followed by The Worst Photoshop Fails of 2013.

The most hearted posts were Why We Need the Oxford Comma and Second Grader's Cure for Playground Loneliness: The Buddy Bench, which tied. The most emailed post was I'm Climbing Up the Christmas Tree Neow.

The most-liked post on Facebook this week was French Cafe Charges Extra for Poor Manners, although McDonald's Will Sell Poutine in Its Canadian Restaurants and The Baby Name "Cheese" Increased in Popularity 450% Last Year did exceptionally well, too.

If Tim Burton Animated Doctor Who was our biggest post on both Twitter and Google+, and the most-pinned post on Pinterest was Wonder (Woman) Bread.

We have our own social media sites, too! Join us at the Neatoramanauts Facebook page, where you can discuss the question of the day and see fun stuff that doesn't show up on our main page, like this simple gingerbread house. Even I could pull this one off! Check out our Pinterest boards, too!

Whatever successes we have each week are due in large part to you, our readers. We write, collect, and find the most interesting things we can for you, and when you repost, link, email, or share our stuff on social media, it all helps us to 1. survive and flourish, and 2. know what you like best, so we can bring you more of it. We appreciate your feedback, too! Let us know what you like and how we can do better.

There are always people on your list that are difficult to buy gifts for, because they don't need anything, but you want to show them some love. That's when you go to the NeatoShop and select something different and audacious that you won't find at your local shopping center. Everyone can use a t-shirt, especially one that has a clever twist on the recipient's favorite pastime or pop culture obsession. Right now, you can take advantage of the NeatoShop's last t-shirt sale of the year and get more for your money! Get them something they'll be proud to show off -and support independent internet artists (and Neatorama) at the same time.
