2013 In Play-Doh

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

What the Fox Say? Well, it's probably not Play-Doh, but the two certainly have something in common -they are two critical components of this great Mental Floss round up of the top ten moments of 2013 as recreated in Play-Doh. Obviously, What the Fox Say was part of the top moments, but you'll have to visit the link to find out what the rest are.

I do have one issue with the list though. How is Jennifer Lawrence a moment of 2013? Especially when she started getting famous before this year?

Zippo Lighter Menorah

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

(Photo: Klemen Skubic)

Luka Pirnat, an industrial designer in Ljubljana, Slovenia, made a seven-branched menorah with Zippo lighters. He calls it the Zippo Gasolier, which is a reference to gas-burning chandeliers and candelabras that were once common before electric lighting. It’s an elegant, carefully-crafted piece of metalwork.

On the 12th Day of Christmas, the Die

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

While a lot of people think the Twelve Days of Christmas refers to the twelve days before the big day, it's actually the twelve days after. That means you still have enough time to order these great twelve-sided Days of Christmas dice made by Eric C. Harshbarger. He only charges $4 per die, which is a great deal for 11 pipers piping, 5 golden rings and all the rest.

He has all kinds of other great custom dice on his site as well if you prefer Wonderland, Zodiac signs and rock, paper, scissors instead.

Crane Operator Captures Stunning Aerial Images Of Shanghai

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST

Chinese crane operator Wei Gensheng saw many incredible photo ops while working on a crane over 2000 feet above the city of Shanghai, and there he found the perfect subject for his photography- the city itself.

These soaring sky high shots are quite literally breathtaking, especially when you consider the perspective of the photographer, and it’s safe to say nobody has ever seen the city of Shanghai captured photographically in this way before.

Shanghai Tower is now the second tallest building in the world, making Wei one of the bravest photographers in the world for even attempting to take some of these amazing shots!

Dorkly illustrates the additions to each verse. Doctor Who fans, try to guess what else is in the song before you go to the full comic and see what's there. Oh, while you're there, mouseover each picture and see how it changes!

A Handy And Printable Drone Survival Guide

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST

Since our neighborhood skies are going to be populated with pilotless drone robots someday soon, drones which are meant to make our lives easier by relieving us of our burdensome freedom and privacy, we’d better learn what they look like now so we know who or what is watching.

Here’s a handy Drone Survival Guide which identifies the silhouettes of the most commonly used drones in the air today, and denotes which ones are strictly observers and which ones are killers. Think of it as flying robot hunter’s field guide- it’s printable, easy to read at a moment’s notice, and will make things much easier when they start issuing hunting licenses for drones.

The Gävle Goat Has Been Burned

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 05:00 PM PST

Every year, the people of Gavle, Sweden, erect a huge Yule goat made of straw. And most of those years, arsonists manage to burn it down before Christmas. It's happened again, early Saturday morning.

The massive straw goat, which this year had been beefed up with flame retardant liquid, has long been a target for arsonists since the first one was erected in the central Swedish city in 1966.

Police authorities were alerted at 4am that the 13-metre tall Gävle goat (Gävlebocken) was on fire and emergency services were quickly on the scene.

"We are out looking with patrols and as usual keeping an open mind on this matter," Fredrik Nilsson of the Gävle police told Aftonbladet.

The last post on the Gävle Goat's blog is quite emotional. It begins:

My dear friends!
Unfortunately, I have to make my last post for this year. I´m now writing to you from goat heaven.

I´m so sorry that I already have to leave you! I had really thought and hoped that I would celebrate Christmas with all of you and get to go with you into the new year but unfortunately it was someone who did not think so! Last night just after four pm it got really hot. Someone set fire on me, ugh! terrible!

The goat has been torched at least 24 times in its history. A record was set in 1977 when the goat started to burn only six hours after it was completed. Local authorities and the goat committee are asking for the public to come forward with any information on the perpetrators. -via Boing Boing

Parents Recreating Famous Movie Scenes With Their Baby

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 04:00 PM PST

Every parent wants to capture every moment with their baby, but your baby's pictures probably aren't all that fascinating to everyone else you know no matter how many likes you get on Facebook. On the other hand, Lilly and Leon — of Cardboard Box Office figured out a clever way to make their baby's pictures entertaining to just about everyone.

That's because they recreate famous movie scenes with their baby and household objects and the resulting images are both adorable and hilarious. Seeing little Orson take on the role of Tom Hanks in Castaway, Mark Hamill in Star Wars and Bruce Willis in Die Hard is simply fantastic and a lot more entertaining than all the baby photos you are probably used to seeing.

The Christmas Can Can

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

(YouTube link)

I've skipped most of the musical Christmas light displays this year because they all seem to look and sound alike after a while. But the music and choreography on this one made me laugh! Music teacher Tom BetGeorge put up 70,000 lights on his home and programmed it to "The Christmas Can Can," sung by the a cappella group Straight No Chaser. If you are near Newark, California, you can see the house perform at the corner of Lafayette and Rushcin. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Incredible Inverted Drawings Of Wolverine

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

There are times when an artist uses a gimmick to draw our attention towards their art, which most of the art lovers in the world find rather annoying, but as it turns out some gimmicks are worth our time.

Take these inverted Wolverine drawings by Brian Lai for example- they can only be seen properly when the pic’s black and white levels are reversed, creating a negative version that reveals all the linework hidden to the naked eye.

Pencils are normally supposed to create lines we see, but Brian decided to flip that concept and create contours that we can’t see until the negative space is made into the positive, and the results are really quite uncanny.

It Happens Every Year

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 01:00 PM PST

Artificial tree or real, every year, cats everywhere think Christmas trees are great new cat condos their loving owners bought them to play with. Unfortunately, Christmas trees just aren't made with that kind of weight in mind and most ornaments aren't made to survive a crash to the ground.

Fortunately for little Sesshomaru here, this tree doesn't have any ornaments on it yet, so he gets to learn his lesson about Christmas trees without suffering any serious injuries or crashing loud noises.

Santa School

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

The Charles Howard’s Santa Claus School has been training Santas since 1937, and is still operating today! IN 1961, LIFE magazine published an article about a class of Santas, with photographs by Alfred Eisenstaedt. MessyNessyChic has a collection of those whimsical pictures of would-be Santas learning to give a jolly laugh, dance, interact with children, and wear a beard with style. -via Digg

Santa Claus Meatloaf

Charles Phoenix is a chef and performer in love with 1950s and 1960s Americana. His test kitchen “puts the kitsch in kitchen.” This is the inevitable result for Christmas. The Santa Claus Meatloaf is the perfect treat for Santa to enjoy when he visits your home. It’s certainly a healthier alternative to cookies.

Scroll down and you can see that the Santa Claus Meatloaf bakes well.

100 Pieces of Advice from 100-Year-Olds

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

When someone turns 100 years old, it makes the newspaper and they are inevitably asked for the secret to longevity and their advice to others. Some of that advice comes from years of wisdom; some comes from a great sense of humor. And I've heard that a sense of humor contributes to longevity, anyway, so DeAnna Kerley compiled advice from quite a few centenarians to make a list of 100 bits of wisdom. Here are some of my favorites:

6. “Fall in love, get married. Sex is to be encouraged.”

29. “Love people. Find something to like about the person—it’s there—because we’re all just people.”

36. “Don’t die too early.”

43. “I put my health down to whiskey and cigarettes. I only drink when I’m out, but my doctor said I wouldn’t be alive without them. I’m still alive, and I can lift my elbows—it’s great.”

51. “Don’t be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: you don’t know when your number is up, and you can’t take it with you to the next place.”

63. “Try not to eat anything that’s healthy. It’s true. I eat whatever I want. The secret to longevity is ice cream.”

76. “Take naps every day.”

Of course, there's a lot more that you might find even more helpful. Read the entire list at mental_floss.

Wall Street Banker Captures NYC Underworld In Photo Series

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

The average Wall Street worker slips straight from their world of stock quotes and ticker tape to their comfortable home without paying any mind to the slums and underworld elements that surround their brokerage house or trading floor.

Chris Arnade, on the other hand, saw a chance to document humanity in the raw when he left work each day, shooting photos of New York City’s underworld that are both moving and a bit unnerving. This is street life at its core- prostitution, drug abuse, homelessness and rampant mental illness.

His pictures dare you to look away, yet force the viewer to realize that ignoring the problem won't make it go away. Chris is hoping that spreading awareness will shed light on the problems facing modern urban society, New York in particular, and he’s creating some incredibly powerful street photography at the same time.

Belka Learns to Howl

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

YouTube member patkandiurin posted this video of Belka, a 20-day-old Malamute-husky mix learning to howl, with lessons from her son. That's adorable -and interesting enough on its own, but read her comment!

Belka means "Squirrel" in Russian...my husband named her that for the colour of her coat...her mom's name is Laika, which means "Barker" in Russian and was one of the first animals sent into space by the Russians.  Laika is actually a very quiet dog and usually only barks when a Polar Bear is near our yard, as we live in Churchill Manitoba...Polar Bear Capital of the world :)

As if a polar bear in the yard is a normal everyday occurrence. Maybe for her, but the rest of us are impressed! See another video of Belka here. -via Viral Viral Videos

Celebrate Your Wedding with Spinning Donuts

Kay-Leigh and Gervan Diaz got married last Saturday. To mark the occasion, they had a driver perform burnout donuts around them in a BWM E46 while they kissed. It's romantic like the concluding kiss of an action movie as well as a demonstration of trust in the driver's skill.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 21 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

We're sliding into the home stretch of Christmastime, and the kids are out of school. Do you have all your decorating, shopping, and baking done yet? No, I don't, either. You remember when you were a kid, and it took forever for Christmas to get here? The older you get, the faster December whizzes by. And the New Year. And years fly pretty fast, too. We hope you are enjoying the holiday season, and hope you have the most wonderful Christmas ever! Get yourself some eggnog or some spiced cider and take a few moments to catch up on the great stuff you may have missed this week at Neatorma.

Jill found us Awesome Examples of Anchorman Fan Art.

John Farrier wrote In 1814, This Massive Warship Cruised Lake Ontario.

We had a guest post from Daven Hiskey at Today I Found Out called Why We Sing Auld Lang Syne on New Year’s Eve.

Eddie Deezen told us about The Biggest-selling Christmas Album of All Time.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders came from Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us A Theory of Absolutely Everything.

Chasing the Cicada: Exploring the Darkest Corridors of the Internet was from mental_floss magazine.

This week's Puzzlr was about Graduation. Our Conceptis puzzle was Color Link-a-Pix. And our Whodunit this week was Aunt Penny's Brooch. We bring you these puzzles every week, and they are all archived in the sub-blog NeatoPuzzles. But one has a real prize:

The What Is It? game gave us an odd contraption that was an apple parer, corer, and slicer, patent number 122,553. Several people knew that, but we're looking for the funniest answers. Phil and Buster had a good one: "This, to me, looks like a bean extractor. The child is told the end-piece is a fragrant flower. Upon sniffing, the extractor is slowly inserted and rotated to acquire the bean. Once extracted, the child is usually left none the wiser." Once I realized he was talking about the child's nose instead of the ear, it made sense! Then marcintosh also had a great story about a prototype automobile that you need to go here to read. Both win T-shirts from the NeatoShop! See all the answers for this week's What Is It? items at the What Is It? blog.

The post with the most comments this week was This Bunny Loves His Baths, which was largely a discussion of John's pet rabbits. In second place was a 3-way tie between 33% of US Tourists Think That Haggis Is an Animal, He was Only Three Days from Retirement! and The 50 Most Popular Toys From The Last 50 Years.

The comment of the week was David H Szondy's response to John's haggis post.

That sheep's bladder thing isn't a haggis. What you've been eating is the infamous "false" haggis that was invented in 1844 to make up for the shortage of the true haggis after it was almost hunted to extinction in the aftermath of the outbreak of the Burns Night craze. The common or garden variety haggis is, in fact, a shy little globular animal that lives in the highlands and whose planitive, squealling bleats can be heard over the lonely hills as it roams from distillery to distllery to beg a wee dram. It's much prized for its bright tartan pelt, which is used to make bag pipes and its platypus-like beak that was once the basis of the sporran industry.

The most popular post was 50 Kick Ass Funny T-Shirts Every Geek Should Have, followed by The Giant Horse Conch is the Death Star of the Mollusk World. Coming in third was 21 Fascinating Things You Might Not Know About Mary Poppins. It was a good week, as we had a half-dozen other posts that outdid anything from earlier in the month.

The post with the most ♥s was Young Man with Down Syndrome Accepted into College, Reacts Joyfully, with Chasing the Cicada: Exploring the Darkest Corridors of the Internet in second place, and third was This Bunny Loves His Baths.

The most emailed post was Christmas Lights for the Lazy followed by The Nativity Cats of Brooklyn.

Keep in mind that the stats I post here are mainly for fun and to let you know what you might want to go see in case you missed it. Stats change, and we know that anything posted on a Friday will never make it in here, even if it becomes a hit later. Still, your ♥s and shares and comments let us know what kind of posts you like best, so we can bring you more of them. We are always looking for feedback!

The social networking post of the week was 50 Kick Ass Funny T-Shirts Every Geek Should Have, which was our top post on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+. Turducken? No, Thanks. I'll Have the Cthurkey and 50 Geektastic Christmas Gift Ideas also did rather well on Facebook this week.

On our own social networking sites, you will want to check out our special Pinterest board on Christmas. And over at the Neatoramanauts Facebook page, you'll find treats that aren't on the main blog, like this scheme ---> for protecting your Christmas tree from the resident cats.

Usability Tip of the Week:Each post has tags that can help you find more posts on the same subject. At the bottom of an isolated post, see the word salad between the sharing buttons and the related posts. Click on any of those and get a list of other Neatorama posts with the same tag. This time of year, you might be interested in the posts tagged "Year End List" to see how 2013 is shaping up.

In the next four days, I'll probably have plenty of opportunities to wish you a Merry Christmas, but this is still an appropriate place to say it, and a big thank you to everyone who bought a t-shirt or other gift from the NeatoShop, because that helps to ensure that we will be here next year! You can still order Christmas gifts for the USA, if you use Express Mail or USP Next Day Air. Otherwise, you can order something neat and present the recipient a picture of it and then blame us for it arriving late.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
FROM ALL OF US ATNEATORAMA!
