14 Hilarious Family Christmas Photos

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

For some people, Christmas is a time for a quiet, solemn reflection on the deeper meaning of the holiday, but for others, it’s just another excuse to get silly with their families. Here are a few of our favorite funny family Christmas photos.

All is Calm

Plenty of parents dream of a silent night while their little angels are up in bed dreaming of sugar plums, but it rarely happens, especially when the kiddos are all ramped up on Christmas sugar cookies and the prospect of seeing Santa in the flesh. Michelle Jones thought up one way to guarantee she has at least one silent night this year –a little duct tape.

Ahhhh…Heavenly Peace

Here’s another take on the duct tape Christmas photo, this one complete with children tied in Christmas lights. Huffington Post reader adrianalizd claims this was the only way she could get the kids still and quiet enough to take a family photo.

Comfort and Joy

Don’t believe me that Christmas is never quiet with kids around? Just look at this joyous bunch photographed by Jamilia Jean.

Peace on Earth

Well, at least between humans. As Doctor Peter Venkman would point out though, when dogs and cats live together in harmony, it’s actually a sign of the apocalypse. So this card by Redditor Balls in A Blender’s cousin’s friend really just says everything is right with the world.

On the Naughty List

Of course, just because two animals are the same species doesn’t mean they’ll get along any better during the Christmas photo as Redditor ktgrl264’s picture proves.

This Card is on Fire

Everybody run! Christmas is over! If the scene in this picture by Michael Herb wasn’t staged, it would actually be a sad scene, but as it is, it’s just a silly look at how crazy and stressful things can be during the holidays.

The Ghost of Christmas Punching

Redditor ToddGakkkk finally got his family together for a Christmas photo this year. Supposedly, this is the only portrait they have as a family.

More Toys! More Joys!

Huffington Post user Chase Patrick sent in this picture of his kids protesting Mall Street and the practice of only having one stocking per child back in 2010.

Blame the Elf

If Tom Jordan’s Christmas photo teaches us anything, it’s that you should never trust a tiny, tattooed elf.

I Call Judas!

The problem with framing your family Christmas portrait like the last supper is that one person gets to be revered as Jesus and one person has to be Judas. This great Awkward Family Photos picture was submitted by their reader Robert.

Get it All Over With at Once

Why limit yourself to only one holiday when your card can actually cover every celebration coming up over the next year? Redditor Stumbling_Sober created what is essentially the most effective greeting card ever created for his 2011 holiday card.

What Happens Behind Closed Doors

Some people just don’t want to take Christmas photos and sometimes, their family should just leave them alone about it or they just might end up getting a holiday card like this one, by Redditor Drixislove, in the mail.

A Merry Canadian Christmas

Redditor evtaylor posted this picture of their family spending Christmas morning together on a brisk Canadian morning. I assume they ran into the house to cuddle by the fire right after the shutter clicked.

Adam and Eve Part 2

This might just be the most awkward family Christmas photo ever taken. It was sent in to Awkward Family Photos by reader Herman, but whether or not Herman is actually in this pic is hard to say. He certainly didn’t step forward to identify himself if he is.

From Us to You

Finally, one from a few of the Neatorama staff (we're not above looking silly). Here's Zeon and I with our dearly departed pup, who didn't understand the whole sitting stil for a photo thing.

Did you guys take your Christmas photos yet? If so, did you take any silly ones? Feel free to share them in the comments or email them to jill@neatorama.com if you have one you’d like to share!

Models Of Famous Artists At Work Inside Their Studios

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 02:00 AM PST

People who enjoy viewing works of art rarely think about the person who created the pieces they’re enjoying, much less the workspace utilized by the artist during the creation process, but sculptor/model maker Joe Fig thought it was about time somebody let us see what life is like inside the artist’s studio.

Joe created a series of miniature dioramas which depict various artists, from Jackson Pollock to Henri Matisse to Joe Fig himself, working away in their tiny little studios creating those iconic works of art we all know and love. And while the scenes are small in scale the details are large as life, and full of whimsical additions that make each scene feel like a voyeuristic peek into the lives of these iconic artists.

Peanuts Christmas Dance in Real Life

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

We all know the dance sequence from the TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas. After all, it's been aired every year since 1965! And the song, "Linus and Lucy" by Vince Guaraldi, became the theme for every Peanuts special that followed.

Mashable took a dance crew out in the streets of New York City to perform a flashmob version of the dance exactly as Schoeder, Linus, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang did it. Lucky passers-by were delighted! And those of us, like myself, who never get to see unexpected entertainment, get to see it on video. -via Viral Viral Videos

Artists Create Their Interpretations Of Yule Logs

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 10:00 PM PST

When 65 different artists were asked to create their interpretations of Yule logs the results are as you would expect- very diverse, creative and a bit odd. Some holiday traditions, it seems, were in desperate need of a makeover, and the simple image of a Yule log crackling in a fireplace all pleasant and peaceful like had to go.

Enter Yule Log 2.0, logs that give off the warmth of imagination, instead of heat and carcinogens, and will sit there looking cool and artsy all year long. So seal up that fireplace, give those logs back to the forest from whence they came and let these 21st century editions become the new tradition.

Marvel Super Heroes as Cute Animals

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST

Loki as a fox? Deadpool as a giraffe? Wolverine as ...a wolverine? This is not fan fiction. These are real covers of real Marvel comics, with super heroes and villains re-imagined as cute pets and woodland creatures.

To celebrate the launch of All-New Marvel NOW!, the publisher’s big 2014 promotion that will relaunch, renumber or revive almost its entire line, Marvel is running a series of special variant covers that re-imagines the lead characters of each series as an animal, with art by the likes of Mike del Mundo, Chris Samnee and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’s Katie Cook. Think of it more like “Marvel MEOW!”

Which is just what you'd expect after Disney bought Marvel five years ago -but we didn't think it would take this long! See 23 of the covers at Wired. -via Geeks Are Sexy

Introducing Quirky the Blind Kitten

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST

(Video Link)

We've already seen just how adorable and capable blind kittens can be when Oskar the Blind Kitten hit the scene back in 2011. But now following in his footsteps is Quirky, an adorable kitten who was born blind. Like Oskar though, little Quirky is still living a full, happy life.

The little kitten was born back in July and his owners adopted him when he was only five weeks old after the shelter considered putting him down because of his disability. Fortunately, now he is having a great time playing with toys and exploring the world in his own way.

Lunar Baboon finds happiness in the most unexpected places. Unfortunately, this kind of joy is only available to those who work outside the home. Still, there's something to be said about a sturdy lock on the home office door.

16 Awesomely Geeky Gingerbread Houses

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

We've already seen quite a few great geek gingerbread houses this year (Optimus Prime, the Breaking Bad motorhome, the Doctor Who/Sherlock mashup and Hogwarts), but this great Mashable article has plenty more that are still new to us -like this fantastic gingerbread TARDIS by Reddit user Fortunekitty.

I'm also partial to this great Shrodinger's Cat in a box by Redditor Cybertrash's parents. Of course, you have to be careful eating this one because you don't want to accidentally munch on a dead gingerbread cat just because it might be alive.

The Ultimate Christmas Wish

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 12:00 PM PST

(YouTube link)

Get your handkerchief for this one; you're going to need it. The radio station Star 102.5 in Des Moines, Iowa, has a tradition of making Christmas wishes come true. Their latest wish came from a woman who died two years ago. Brenda Schmitz wrote up her wish as she was suffering from ovarian cancer, and left it with a friend, with instructions to submit it to the station after her husband David found someone else to love him and help raise their sons. Watch as David Schmitz is presented with the posthumous wish. -via Metafilter

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

The comic book industry had one heck of a year in 2013, full of comic book movies being released and tons more movies in the works, and things seem to be looking up for the little publishing industry that could.

If you show up to your local comic book store every Wednesday to peruse the latest issues and continue adding to your favorite series collection then you’re probably already be familiar with the fifteen titles that made Gamma Squad's list of Best Comic Books of 2013, but if you’re a casual reader, or just looking for a decent title to read, then this list is for you.

2013's Biggest Science Discoveries

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

Since you read Neatorama, you are probably more familiar with the items in this article than the average person, but seeing the biggest discoveries of 2013 all in one place will make you feel better about the current state of scientific inquiry. From the exploration of distant space to the manipulation of DNA, we know more now than we've ever known before. And "we" have traveled farther than we ever thought possible.

One of the year's biggest announcements came from news that actually happened in 2012. The aftershocks of a pair of solar storms in September confirmed that NASA's venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft had actually entered interstellar space. (See "Voyager 1 Leaves Solar System, NASA Confirms.")

"It is an incredible event, to send the first human object into interstellar space," study lead author Donald Gurnett, of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, told National Geographic.

Why U.S. Parks Are Full Of Squirrels

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

It seems like every National Park in the U.S. is full of them- they’re cute, always hungry and occasionally brave enough to pull a food heist against the humans that visit the park. We’re talking, of course, about squirrels, those bushy tailed little buggers that are so cute you can’t stay mad at them after they try to make off with your ham sandwich.

It turns out squirrels are present in abundance within our National Parks for a very good reason- people love squirrels, and having lots of squirrels around is meant to teach people how to get along with nature while entertaining them with squirrelly antics. Read on to discover how squirrels have become an integral part of parks across the U.S.
