Reader Holiday Photos

Posted: 25 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST

I've been inviting readers to send in photos of their families and pets over the last week. Little Cooper here's owner has sent in great photos of the budgie every time I've asked for reader pictures and they never disappoint.

This happy little birdie knows how to have herself a Merry Little Christmas -complete with a tree and presents just her size.

Cooper and her owner are the only readers who submitted great Christmas photos to us. Here is Greg Williams' great Christmas card for the year showing what happens when the pets take over for the holidays. Nothing's scarier than dogs and cats living together in harmony trying to destroy us all.

Subversive Snowglobes Featuring Scenes From New York City

Posted: 25 Dec 2013 12:00 AM PST

Snowglobes usually depict idyllic scenes of winter wonderlands or important landmarks from around the world, but this series of snowglobes by artist Miss Heather depict those colorful, messed up and non-tourist friendly moments that take place in New York City, making them the opposite of what a visitor to the city would buy in a gift shop.

From Hurricane Sandy to Santacon, stop and frisk scenes to people taking a stand for public nudity, Miss Heather’s subversive snowglobe series Urban Renewal celebrates the diversity of good and bad that makes up life in NYC.

The Pointer Brothers Are Ready For Christmas

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 08:00 PM PST

Dogs don’t generally get in the Christmas spirit without a little encouragement from their owners, but Gus and Travis the German Shorthaired Pointers seem to enjoy celebrating the holidays, even if their stoic expressions say otherwise.

Known as the Pointer Brothers, these two fashionable pooches are very photogenic, and they stand there staring into the camera no matter what their owners put on them. From hats and beards to Christmas lights and plastic toys, Gus and Travis are serious about Christmas, and modeling for their owner Steph McCombie really makes them smile...on the inside.

Reindeer Games

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:00 PM PST

We all know that line in the song where the other reindeer wouldn't let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games. Did you ever wonder what kind of games those might be? Grant Snider at Incidental Comics let his imagination run wild and has more of the Arctic wildlife joining in: seals, walruses, rabbits, lemmings, puffins, and even narwhals! Notice you don't see any polar bears -they tend to not play well with other species. I'm glad they all learned their lesson about including others. -via Laughing Squid

11 Things You Didn't Know About Santa Claus

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 04:00 PM PST

You probably think of him as a fat guy in a big red suit, but you'd be surprised at how much you don't know about both the real St. Nick and his traditional legend. For example, his red suit was only standardized in 1931, thanks to an ad campaign by Coca Cola.

According to legend, he fought saved young women from prostitution, fought off a cannibalistic butcher and even spoke immediately after being born, exclaiming, "God be glorified." Find out more about Old St. Nick over at io9.

Don't Ask George R. R. Martin To Grant Your Christmas Wishes

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 02:00 PM PST

When making a list of all the stuff you want for Christmas, be careful what you wish for, especially if you express those wishes to George R. R. Martin, author of the blood soaked epic fantasy series Game Of Thrones and a man who's commonly mistaken for Santa Claus.

If you run into Mr. Martin you shouldn’t tell him anything, because George tends to take things way too far. George’s idea of helping generally involves dismemberment, murder and treachery, so whatever you do don’t let him in your house!

He's not Santa Claus, and he will bring you nothing but regret, that is if you believe this comic strip by Anna-Maria Jung and Andrew Bridgman. Have a bloody good Christmas everyone!

This Video Will Hurt

You've heard of the placebo effect, of course, but the converse has been observed as well. CGP Grey explains the "nocebo effect." When pharmaceuticals started being advertised on TV, under regulations that the side effects had to be advertised as well, I predicted that those side effects would become more common because of the nocebo effect. I don't know if there are any studies on exactly that, but I know some people who seem to develop every possible side effect when trying a new medicine. There are links to quite a few studies and stories on the nocebo effect at Metafilter. Grey is holding a discussion on this video at reddit.

Make Your Own Minecraft Snowflakes And Avoid The Creepers

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Anybody who has tried their hand at a bit of digital block farming knows that Creepers don’t like to celebrate Christmas, or anything else that involves happiness, and if those blockheads had their way they’d blow the whole holiday up!

Thankfully you can now make your own paper Minecraft snowflakes and celebrate a very blocky Minecraft themed Christmas at home. Just pull out some scissors and paper, follow the handy dandy instructions over at Instructables and fill your home with Minecraft themed snowflakes that won't leave a wet spot on the floor but may give you a paper cut if you're not careful.

Christmas Eve Comic Strip Proposal

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Frank Page, the cartoonist behind Bob the Squirrel (previously at Neatorama), relegated Bob to just an observer in today's strip. Frank himself took center stage to propose to his longtime love Lezley.

In case you were wondering, she said yes. The live proposal took place in their favorite coffee shop in front of a crowd of patrons. Frank says that the monologue in today's strip is exactly what he said to her that night. Do you think maybe she said, "Yes, if you run this proposal in the strip on Christmas Eve"? Naa…  Anyway, we wish Frank and Lezley both all the happiness in the world!

It's time for our weekly collaboration with Conceptis Puzzles, and this week we have the Skyscraper Light game, where you get to arrange skyscrapers in a grid so their skyline is visible according to the clues.

The object is to place a skyscraper in each square so that no two skyscrapers in a row or column have the same number of floors. In addition, the number of visible skyscrapers, as viewed from the direction of each clue, is equal to the value of the clue. Note that higher skyscrapers block the view of lower skyscrapers located behind them. There is only one unique solution for each puzzle.

Game Instructions: Click mouse on the desired square to open dial pad and then click on the desired number. To remove a number, repeat the above using X at the bottom of the dial pad. Numbers can also be placed by pointing mouse on the desired square and then typing with the keyboard.

So go ahead and check it out! Then visit Conceptis Puzzles for more neat puzzles.

Google's Santa Tracker

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 07:00 AM PST

If you have children obsessed Santa Claus and his annual whirlwind trip around the globe, Google has an online tracker that keeps up with his journey. Since we are well into nighttime Christmas Eve in the Eastern Hemisphere, the tracker is going strong! When I took these screen caps, he was through with Australia, and was zipping between Indonesia and The Philippines, delivering gifts and laying tracks at lightning speed. Of course, when he gets near your location, it will be time for good little boys and girls to be in bed, dreaming of sugar plums or game consoles or such.

The Santas of Inglewood Drive

Posted: 24 Dec 2013 06:00 AM PST

(YouTube link)

What is going on here? Is this some HOA gone out of control, or was there a particularly big sale on inflatable Santas at the local department store? No, this is a case of a neighborhood having fun. The residents of Inglewood Drive in Toronto have 29 giant inflatable Santas in front of their homes. Amy Westin had considered an inflatable when she found a "14-foot, totally Griswolds, obnoxious-looking Santa" and bought it for laughs. Another neighbor asked if she minded if he got one, too. Then came the neighborhood party, when Westin told everyone she'd gotten her Santa at a Canadian Tire store.

After a few holiday libations, someone else decided they’d buy a Santa. And another.

Within a few days, seven goliath Santas — some taller than the houses — dotted the lawns on Inglewood.

Eventually, Canadian Tire stores in Toronto sold out of their inflatables, but the company rounded up more from far-flung locations to satisfy the demand.

A minivan showed up one day to deliver 23 brand new inflatable Santas, a gift from Canadian Tire. A Christmas party was then held on the street, including a Beavertail truck, carolers and mugs of hot cocoa.

Keeping with the giving spirit, residents brought canned food items to the party and filled seven bags for the food bank.

Now, people are coming from all over to drive down Inglewood in Moore Park to see the giant inflatable Santas for themselves. -via Arbroath
