Dear Center Supporter, This week marks the sad anniversary of the death of Yellowstone National Park's most famous wolf -- the charismatic female 832, the Queen of Lamar Valley. Safe for years in the park with her family, this fearless alpha female crossed the invisible park boundary one year ago -- and was cruelly gunned down, a victim of Wyoming's first wolf hunt in decades. Without the protection of the Endangered Species Act, wolves are under assault from hunting, trapping and even gassing. What happened to Yellowstone's alpha female should be a wake-up call: We must protect wolves before it's too late. That's why we're fighting tooth and nail to make sure all of America's wolves keep their federal protections. I'm asking you to heed the urgent call to save wolves and make a generous gift today. Because our work to save wolves is so important, a wildlife champion has pledged to match every contribution given by Dec. 31 to the Endangered Species Act Protection Fund. She'll double your gift because she knows this is a life-or-death battle for wolves. For years the mother wolf known as 832 led the Lamar Canyon Pack with her two mates. She created an extended family that enchanted millions of park visitors and revealed to scientists the socially complex world of these majestic animals. Her sudden death shocked the world, but it's no surprise: When wolves are only protected in part of their range, they're never going to be safe. What happened a year ago when this mother wolf was killed should teach us that we still have a long way to go to safeguard these animals. Help us keep wolves out of hunters' crosshairs -- give today and your gift will be doubled. Bloodthirsty wolf-hate groups continually post disturbing images of dead wolves on social media, and anti-wolf forces are now getting support from the deep-pocketed Koch Brothers' Americans for Prosperity and other special-interest groups. They're pushing hard to make sure wolves are delisted once and for all. As we've seen in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, without strong federal protection wolves will be mercilessly shot, trapped and even gassed in their dens. Since wolves lost protections in the northern Rockies and the Great Lakes, state-sanctioned hunts have slaughtered more than 2,200 wolves, including alpha female 832. Please take two minutes today to save a life and help us oppose this deadly plan to strip wolves of federal protections so that what happened to alpha female 832 doesn't happen again… and again and again. We need to raise $150,000 from you and other Center supporters by Dec. 31 to reach our special matching gift goal. From red wolves in the Southeast and Mexican wolves in the Southwest to Alexander Archipelago wolves in the Alaskan rainforest and gray wolves across the country, we're the only group working to save all of America's wolves. With your support, our lawyers, scientists and activists will continue fighting the devastating proposal to end the federal wolf recovery program -- both in the streets and in the courts -- and make sure we stand up against the killing of alpha female 832. Help us take advantage of this extraordinary matching offer by giving now and then passing this appeal on to your friends and neighbors.
