Register Today! | | Today's Top Stories An Android vulnerability could enable an attacker to bypass a secure virtual private network (VPN) connection and divert traffic from the Android device to a system controlled by the attacker, according to researchers at Ben-Gurion University's Cyber Security Labs in Israel. Enterprises use VPNs to provide security access to corporate networks for mobile and remote workers. A VPN establishes an encrypted tunnel into the corporate network using the public Internet. However, utilizing this Android vulnerability, hackers are able to bypass the encryption altogether, the researchers argue in a blog. The study found the vulnerability initially in the 4.3 Jelly Bean build, but subsequent investigation revealed the same problem in 4.4 KitKat. "We were able to reproduce the same vulnerability where a malicious app can bypass active VPN configuration (no ROOT permissions required) and redirect secure data communications to a different network address. These communications are captured in CLEAR TEXT (no encryption), leaving the information completely exposed. This redirection can take place while leaving the user completely oblivious, believing the data is encrypted and secure," the researchers explain. The researchers said they contacted Google about the Android vulnerability and were waiting for a response. In an Editor's Corner a few months ago, I pointed out that Android malware is a growing concern for IT pros, particularly with the flood of personally owned mobile devices coming into the enterprise. Recent research by security firms has identified a rapid rise in Android malware. "Android malware can place a company's future at risk by exposing strategic information or stealing passwords," Sophos warns in its Security Threat Report 2013. Register before Jan. 31st and be entered to win Google Glass. | Chinese PC and smartphone maker Lenovo has agreed to buy phone manufacturer Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.9 billion, Google announced on Wednesday. The $2.9 billion price includes $660 million in cash, $750 million in Lenovo shares to be tendered at the close of the deal and $1.5 billion in a three-year promissory note. Motorola Mobility's smartphone portfolio includes Moto X and Moto G as well as the Droid Ultra series. The transaction will not transfer most of Motorola Mobility's patent portfolio, including current patent applications and invention disclosure. Google retains ownership of those assets, but will license them to Lenovo. Google is selling Motorola Mobility at a deep discount, having paid $12.5 billion to acquire it less than two years ago, notes the New York Times. "The deal is not a total financial loss for the extremely wealthy Google. In addition to keeping billions of dollars' worth of patents, it essentially turned Lenovo into a factory for its Android operating system, and also picked up some cash," the newspaper observes. Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Partners, tells the New York Times that Google makes its money "from people watching YouTube ads and doing searches. They don't necessarily need to be the hardware maker ... Motorola's been a millstone and a drag on results." Jack Gold, principal analyst at J. Gold Associates, believes the deal makes sense for both Google and Lenovo. Google doesn't "need to be in the device business, and [the deal] got them into some hot water with their leading OEMs. Lenovo gets to buy into a major brand with still substantial channels outside of Lenovo's primary mobile presence in China. And it gets an engineering staff that knows phones for worldwide sales," Gold said. In 2013, 217.1 million tablets were shipped, up 50.6 percent from 2012, according to IDC stats. In the fourth quarter of 2013, 76.9 million units were shipped, up 62.4 percent from the previous quarter and 28.2 percent over the year ago quarter. "It's becoming increasingly clear that markets such as the U.S. are reaching high levels of consumer saturation and while emerging markets continue to show strong growth this has not been enough to sustain the dramatic worldwide growth rates of years past," says Tom Mainelli, research director for tablets at IDC. Apple had its most successful quarter to date, shipping 26 million tablets in the fourth quarter, up 13.5 percent from the year ago quarter, according to IDC. Yet, Apple still lost market share to Samsung, which shipped 14.5 million tablets in the quarter, up 85.9 percent from the year ago quarter. By contrast, third place Amazon saw its tablet shipments sink by 1.7 percent, down to 5.8 million units in the fourth quarter. At the end of the year, Apple held 33.8 percent of the tablet market, Samsung, 18.8 percent, and Amazon, 7.6 percent. Asus followed in fourth place with a 5.1 percent market share, and surging Lenovo, which saw a 325 percent year-over-year increase in tablet shipments, was in fifth with a 4.4 percent market share. "Lenovo's access to the Chinese whitebox manufacturing infrastructure has helped it drive more low-priced tablet products into the market, growing its share from just 1.3 percent in the same quarter last year. The company's strength in emerging markets, and its increased market share in adjoining markets such as PCs and smartphones, makes it well positioned to see additional tablet gains in 2014," says Jitesh Ubrani, research analyst for IDC's worldwide quarterly tablet tracker. One-quarter of all Android smartphones shipped in the fourth quarter of 2013 were of the forked variety, which is a significantly different version of the Android OS. Examples include Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook tablets. The growth of forked Android OS smartphones is "significant for Android's owner Google, because AOSP does not offer Google's services (due to their unavailability in China), impacting Google's ability to monetize the Android ecosystem," comments Nick Spencer, senior practice director, mobile devices.
