10 Evidence Based Wedding Vows

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

(Reluctant Groom Cake Topper now on sale at the NeatoShop)

One of the best pieces of marital advice that I encountered while I was engaged was, "Take your wedding vows seriously."

Samantha Joel has a similar idea. She's a doctoral student in psychology and is engaged to be married. She's written ten phrases that can be used in wedding vows. These reflect what psychological research reveals to be successful traits of enduring relationships. Each of her vows are followed by a psychological explanation and footnotes to support her claims. Here's an example:

6. I promise to nurture your goals and ambitions; to support you through misfortune and celebrate your triumphs.

This vow covers the other side of being a good attachment figure: being there for your partner when they’re not distressed. Basically, my partner and I both want to know that we can take risks, make mistakes, and come home to a supportive partner at the end of the day. Letting your partner go out and conquer their goals, knowing that you’re there in the background cheering them on, is called being a “secure base”.7

Selling Shame: 40 Outrageous Vintage Ads Any Woman Would Find Offensive

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

Advertising has always invented problems that can be solved with your money and their product. This is especially true when targeting women. We are too fat or too skinny, we have bad skin, dishpan hands, and most of all, we smell bad. Ads are a bit more subtle these days, but through most of the 20th century, they shamed us into buying more and more personal and household products.

Cynthia Petrovic collects vintage ads to post at her blog Do I Offend? the "web's largest collection of degrading, ridiculous, humiliating ads from yesteryear!" She talked to Collectors Weekly about the era of advertising that destroyed a woman's confidence for the sake of sale.

Collectors Weekly: According to vintage ads, what are some of the consequences of not using these products?

Petrovic: One is, of course, you’ll be lonely and you won’t have any dates. That’s the worst. The second is that your female friends will talk about you behind your back because you stink. In the 1930s, ads would have a little photos of the bridge game, and the women are whispering, “Oh God, I wish she used deodorant.” The third is that you will not get jobs. You’ll be passed over for promotions because the boss really thinks that you smell, but he’s not going to say anything. A lot of these ads were done during the Depression so you had women desperately trying to get work. Somebody finally tips them off that they need to take a bath because they stink. I’m not saying that this is all ridiculous. There might be some truth to it, but it’s magnified to the point where a woman is taught to blame herself for everything.

Read more about the many ways marketers targeted a woman's insecurities and see a gallery of ridiculous ads at Collectors Weekly.

Miles O'Brien Has the Worst Job on the Enterprise

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

Miles O'Brien was a recurring minor character in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He was an NCO who ran the main transporter room. He was in that room, alone, for long, long periods of time. Cartoonist Jon Adams suspects that O'Brien felt unfulfilled and deeply depressed. He has created a series of comics showing O'Brien's lonely existence in that room. They are funny! You can read the first one here.

Eventually, O'Brien was promoted. He became Chief of Operations on the space station Deep Space 9 on Star TrekDeep Space Nine. That's awesome, right? No. For seven years, the writers of that show played a constant game of "How can we destroy O'Brien's life this week?" One of the more inventive responses was to lock him in prison for 20 years.

Tips for Russians Visiting America

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST

Therese Oneill found some Russian guides for those traveling to America and sent it through Google's translator. What resulted was some eye-opening differences between the two cultures. A couple of examples:

“When Americans are talking, they might put their foot on a nearby chair, or even a table. They might cross their legs so that one foot rests on the opposite knee. In American culture, it is considered an acceptable norm, but often causes irritation in other countries.” (Национальные особенности этикета в США)

“Welcome and introductions: men and women tend to shake hands. Mutual kissing and kissing ladies' hands is not accepted. Also, women play a greater role in business. Often they insist to be treated exactly as an equal and not as a lady. In this regard, it is not acceptable to be excessively gallant, and you should avoid personal questions (do not find out whether she is married). (Национальные особенности этикета в США)

Did you know that crossing one's legs was irritating in other cultures? The article also addresses the American habits of smiling a lot and not wanting to listen to complaints. Read the rest at mental_floss.

Watch This Woman Destroy the World Record for Eating 72 Ounce Steak

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST

(Video Link

Our hero of the day is Molly Schuyler. Last Friday, she sat down before a 72 ounce steak at Sayler's Old Country Kitchen in Portland, Oregon. The Guinness World Record for eating one was 6 minutes and 48 seconds.

Molly Schuyler got the entire steak down her throat in under 3 minutes.

It wasn't even planned. She did it "on a whim."

Since 1948, the restaurant has challenged diners to try to eat one of their four and a half pound steaks in an hour. Only 611 people have ever succeeded.

Thanks to Molly Schuyler, they'll have to raise their standards.

25 Things You Didn’t Know About The Movie Fight Club

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST

You might think you know all there is to know about the 1999 movie Fight Club, but even so, you will find trivia to blow your mind in this list. I still haven't seen the movie, and it was at least ten years old before I ever knew there was a twist in it. Now I see there are easter eggs in almost every scene, stuff that you have to look for. And after reading this list you'll have an excuse to go watch it again because you have to check out and see if these things are real. Some content NSFW.

Celebrating A Baby's Birthday With Awesome Gamer Pics

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST

What do you get your one year old baby if you want to make sure they'll actually remember the present when they get older? How about a great set of photos that put him in the lead role of some of today's top video games.

The pics were taken by proud geek papa Ben Stirling, who obviously loves gaming almost as much as he loves his little baby boy.

They're kind of like those photos we saw last month showing the baby starring in top films only this time the parents aren't there and the pics are all photoshop, no actual props -which makes more sense for gaming anyway.

MakerBot Toy Lines You Can Download And Print

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST

One of the greatest things about the 3D printing revolution is that everyone’s ready and willing to share their creations. Those who are busy making models to be printed aren’t looking to make a fortune on their creations, they’d rather contribute to the cause by sharing their creations with the world for a low price, if not free, via download.

MakerBot has just released a bunch of different toy sets which can be bought for cheap via their website then printed at your leisure- if you're lucky enough to own a 3D printer. The sets range from super kiddie Chunky Trucks to fun retro styled sci-fi rocket ships in the Cosmic Cadets series and, my personal favorite, the fantasy series Dragons of Glastonbury, and at ten bucks a set they're just begging to be purchased, printed and played with!

On The Edge Survival Jacket

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

When worn normally, this jacket looks like your everyday, mild-mannered coat. But when the apocalypse hits, it turns into a Swiss army knife of fashion! Designer Marie-Elsa Batteux Flahault calls it On The Edge. The hidden features include:

* A fold-out visor and mask
* Inflatable sections to be used as floatation devices
* Diagrams in the hood on how to use the drawstring as a weapon or a trap
* Bright orange warning flags
* A foil thermal blanket folded into the hem
* A knife hidden in the sleeve

That last feature will keep this jacket out of airports, but doomsday preppers don't frequent airports all that much. Oh, there's more, which you can read about at Dezeen. -via Nag on the Lake

Behind The Magic- The Visual Effects Of Pacific Rim

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 04:00 PM PST

Audiences were blown away by the incredible CGI visuals in Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi flick Pacific Rim, so it comes as no surprise that they were created by one of the best visual effects companies in the biz- Industrial Light & Magic.

ILM spent two years creating the mind blowing viz fx for the film, and boy does their time and effort show in the finished product! Here’s a treat for both fans of the film and those who are interested in a behind-the-scenes peek at how ILM creates their digital magic-a three and a half minute long peek at how digital effects brought the dystopian world of Pacific Rim to life.

Nice Webcomic You Got There. It'd Be a Pity if Anything Bad Happened to It.

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST

When you post an artist's work, if it is at all possible to identify the artist, provide his/her name and link to the site. And certainly don't remove the artist's name from the work or, worst of all, add your own watermark after removing the artist's name.

Pictures in Boxes expresses the frustration that a lot of artists, especially webcomic artists, experience.

P.S. Avoid going to the pokey.

10 Most Unexpected Plot Twists in Movie History

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST

Oh yes, the linked post contains spoilers, you betcha. Chance are that you've seen a lot of the films on this list, but surely not all of them. You can skip through this slideshow and find out what the films are without reading the description of the unexpected twist. That way, you can decide whether to read the spoiler in the description or not -the pictures won't give it away. Well, maybe the last one, but you've seen it.

If you are like me, knowing the twist does not ruin the experience, but instead makes me want to see movies I'd skipped the first time around. Pictured here is the movie that surprised us all in 1968, but has since been rendered completely un-shocking due to its age and numerous sequels and reboots. Read about all ten movies at New Scribol.

Learn to Make Your Own Super Bowl Snack Stadium

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST

We've featured snack stadiums on Neatorama before, but we've never actually talked about how to make them because up until now we never knew how. But thanks to Neatorama fan Heather Arment of A Lil' Curious, we can make our own this year.

The great thing about learning how to make your own snack stadium is that it means you can fill it with all your favorite snacks, so while I think Heather's stadium looks absolutely delicious, I think I would find a way to add in some ranch dip and spinach dip to compliment the bread and veggies.

7-Year-Old Girl Asks Scientists for Dragon; They Comply

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

Sophie, a 7-year-old girl in Queensland, Australia, wrote a letter to the Australian national science agency CSIRO. She asked for a dragon.

Hello Lovely Scientist

My name is Sophie and I am 7 years old. My dad told me about the scientists at the CSIRO. Would it be possible if you can make a dragon for me. I would like it if you could but if you can’t that’s fine.

I would call it toothless if it was a girl and if it is a boy I would name it Stuart.

I would keep it in my special green grass area where there are lots of space. I would feed it raw fish and I would put a collar on it. If it got hurt I would bandage it if it hurt himself. I would play with it every weekend when there is no school.

Love from Sophie

Sophie received a public reply which reads, in part:

Over the past 87 odd years we have not been able to create a dragon or dragon eggs. We have sighted an eastern bearded dragon at one of our telescopes, observed dragonflies and even measured body temperatures of the mallee dragon. But our work has never ventured into dragons of the mythical, fire breathing variety.

And for this Australia, we are sorry.

But that's not the end of the story! The agency's additive manufacturing facility in Melbourne went to work, and created a titanium 3D-printed dragon named Toothless in Lab 22.

The dragon is being shipped to Sophie in Brisbane. See a video of Toothless' design process at Geeks Are Sexy.

Shot Putters Must Be Strong And Make Crazy Faces

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST

The strain, the concentrated effort and the energy behind that heavy ball of iron thrown across the field by shot putters during competitions make the moments right before the shot is put priceless when they’re captured on film. But unless you record every Olympic event on your DVR and play back the seconds before the toss frame by frame you're not likely to catch these fleeting moments of facial madness.

Thanks to some fine folks from Reddit you can bask in the glory of shot putter's facial expressions with a series of candid photos, taken at just the right moment to capture all the greatness of those who launch iron balls for the sake of glory.

Protect Your Battle Cat With This Leather Suit of Armor

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

Is your kitty a little gladiator? Then celebrate her purrfect killing methods with this fantastic suit of armor made by Etsy seller schnabuble. Finally, she can become a "unstoppable force for slaughter" like she's always dreamed of.

I can't help but wonder how this armor will hold up against the guinea pig suit of armor that was one of the most viral stories on the internet last year. After all, the cat is obviously a better warrior, but I believe the metal armor would be better when it comes to protection. And before anyone gets all riled up, no, I don't think cats and guinea pigs should get in fights -I'm just curious how the armors would hold up against one another.

Can a Quiz Predict Your Politics?

Posted: 10 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

How well do you fit into stereotypes that lean in a particular political direction? TIME magazine put together a 12-question quiz that aims to peg you politically by some parameters that have nothing to do with politics (while other parameters do). Try it out and let us know how accurate you think it is. I thought I would show up as a socialist, as usual, but the results have me at only 69% liberal. The problem seems to be that "agree a little" appears to be weighted the same as as "strongly agree." But I may be wrong, as the accompanying explanation tells us that some questions are weighted more than others. -via Digg

I've just discovered the works of Leonid Afremov and I'm quite taken with them. He's a native of Vitebsk, Belarus who now lives in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. After exploring different media during his career, he has settled into the application of oil paint on canvas with a palette knife.

The results are striking. The choppy forms and vibrant colors are especially convincing in his scenes of cities during rainy nights. You can see more examples of his work here.
