Disney's Next Princess

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Disney's next princess movie isn't due until 2018, but there's already fan art to enjoy. A leaked piece of concept art was retracted because, according to Disney, it wasn't an official release. We don't know how much development has gone into the character or the story, but Disney movie fans all over the internet have responded by giving us their own visions to Moana.

The animated musical will tell the story of a young Polynesian sea-voyager and navigator, Moana Waialiki, and will be directed by the creators of The Princess and the Frog, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. It apparently includes Moana going on an epic journey and meeting demi-gods from what the Disney wiki somewhat oxymoronically describes as “real mythology.”

Not much else is known about the film (because, you know, it isn’t out for another four years), but the fact that Moana will be Disney’s first Polynesian sea-voyaging princess is enough for many people to be majorly psyched already.

Read about what we know and what we don't know about the character, and what fans are hoping for, at The Daily Dot.

Being Self-Conscious

Are your relationships sufficiently superficial? Can you get your abs down without actually working hard? How far are you falling behind your friends?

Never mind that. A magazine that makes you questions your own value should start with your ethics and personality.

Trailer For Love Child- A Documentary About Internet Addiction

A South Korean couple were so immersed in the multiplayer game Prius Online that they let their child starve to death, raising questions about whether Korea’s “place as the world leader of Internet infrastructure has adversely affected its communal society”.

That’s the story behind the first plea of not guilty due to internet addiction that actually worked- a manslaughter case against Kim Yoo-chul and Choi Mi-sun that inspired Valerie Veatch to create the documentary Love Child, a timely documentary which recently played at the Sundance Film Festival addressing the problem faced by nations across the globe as our daily lives become more integrated with the Internet.

Tattoo Says "Live Long and Prosper" in Vulcan

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

Now I can't personally attest to the translation because I foolishly studied Latin instead of the more widely-spoken Vulcan tongue. I know only enough Vulcan to get into a bar fight.

But this Vulcan language blog seems to attest to the accuracy of Claire Little's tattoo. I hope that she made sure before she got it inked on. It would be embarrassing to later learn that the text read something like "plomeek soup" or "dry clean only."

The Push Up Muscle Shirt

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

Ew. Are my eyes deceiving me, or is this guy's stomach still sticking out beneath his new, uh, girdle? I don't think anyone who knows him would be fooled by such a shirt, even if it worked exactly as advertised. And where does all that stomach go when he puts it on?

But wait -this ad is not what it seems. Go to the website for The Flattering ManPush Up Muscle Shirt, and pretty soon alarms will go off. And then you find out what this website is really advertising. Stay until the end, and you'll see a collection of other similar prank sites. -via reddit

25 Things You Might Not Know about RoboCop

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST

(Image: Orion Pictures)

RoboCop is a great American epic tale of a cyborg police officer who brings justice to the streets of Detroit. It was a huge hit in 1987 and is being remade into a new film that will be released in 2014.

Maurice and Nigel Mitchell, the internet's Geek Twins, rounded up of 25 bits of trivia that you might not know about this 80s classic.

For example, although the movie takes place in Detroit, most of it was shot in Dallas. The only view of Detroit in the movie is aerial stock footage. Nonetheless, Detroit will get a statue of their great hero.

Gang leader Clarence Boddicker (played by Kurtwood Smith) wore rimless glasses. Directors selected them so that he might resemble Nazi leader Heinrich Himmler.

You can read the rest of the list here.

Breaking the Facts of Life

Last night we saw a list of actors who didn't know what their finished movie would be like. How could that happen? Here's how: editing, editing, editing, and music. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, and Anna Gunn had no idea they'd spent all that time filming an upbeat family sitcom when they did their lines for Breaking Bad.

The clips chosen for this mashup of Breaking Bad and The Facts of Life are perfect. I'd watch it! Edited by Robert Jones, who also brought us We Can Neutron Dance. -via Metafilter

Regardless of the Weather, The Sentinel Remains

When Hurricane Sandy struck the eastern coast of the United States, the sentinel remained on guard. Now Winter Storm Janus is battering the Washington, D.C. area with wind and several inches of snow.

Yet the sentinel remains. The guardians of the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery have stood a continuous watch over their charges since 1937. They will continue.

Iggy Pop Shows You Around His New York Neighborhood In 1993

(Video Link)

Iggy Pop once called the city of Detroit home, but since he moved on from his time with The Stooges and became a solo star of stage and screen he’s spent some time in a few major cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles and New York.

In 1993 Iggy was living in the Christodora House in New York’s Lower East Side and loving every minute of it, and in this video tour directed by Bram van Splunteren the original punk rocker gives us a very Iggy tour of his neighborhood, which has changed quite a bit over the last twenty years. How to Draw Adventure Time

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST

A few years ago, Fred Seibert, executive producer of Pendleton Ward's Adventure Time, posted some guidelines from the series for drawing the characters Finn and Jake. For instance, how the characters' elbows bend is important, but where they bend is not. This should help you produce some awesome fan fiction, or else give you some insight into the characters. -via Boing Boing

Miguel Cardona's Fantastic Coffee Cup Art

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

Miguel Cardona Jr. is an artist in San Francisco. He draws images from pop culture on paper coffee cups. Cardona's Iron Man cups are particularly good. And, yes, the one at the top of this post really does glow in the dark.

In an interview with Cool Hunting, Cardona reveals that he is refreshingly unpretentious about his work:

Mostly I like robots and skulls. I'm a total 15-year-old boy when it comes to my art sometimes. I once read a story about a woman who had baby squid growing in her gums and I could envision it so well, I had a mini-series of portraits of folks who were suffering and fighting off tentacles from within their own mouths. It kind of sounds morbid, but to me it felt like a very fitting way to express a lot of what I was going through at that time.

Cardona sells his coffee cups online and donates the profits to Project Night Night, a charity devoted to homeless children.

What Would Happen if Harry Potter Lost

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

We've already seen what happens when Harry defeats Voldemort, but what happens in the parallel universe where that's not the case? Thanks to Imgur user deathbystapler, now we know a little more of the tale...at least, what crimes the resistance is guilty of and the bounties on them and which positions some of Voldemort's loyal Death Eaters are awarded when they win the war.

If you like Harry Potter, you definitely won't want to miss the entire series, even if only to celebrate that Harry and the others won.

Parfüm

Boggie (Csemer Boglárka) is a Hungarian singer. Her song "Parfüm" has a particularly intriguing video. Her video image is "improved" into a magazine-ready image of a celebrity in real time during the song -even while she sings!

On the one hand, it's an illustration of how enthusiastic Photoshop treatments take all the reality out of its subjects to make them adhere to an expected standard of beauty. We've seen that before. On the other hand, the video itself is a technical wonder. And the song is nice, too! -via Viral Viral Videos

This Wombat Just Recieved A Hip Replacement

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

Hip replacements: they aren't just for old people any more. In fact, they're not even limited to humans as adorable Wanda the Wombat just proved. The cutie pie had severe arthritis that resulted in her no longer using her leg at all, so the veterinarians opted to fix her up with an artificial hip.

Ordinarily wombats only live for five years in the wild, so at 22, it's no wonder little Wanda needed a little help from her doctor. And we're glad she got the surgery she needed -we want to keep looking at this precious face for years to come.

Majestic Scrap Metal Lion Sculpture

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST

Creating a sculpture befitting the regal King of Beasts is a tall order, but making one out of nearly 4,000 pieces of hammered metal seems like a virtually impossible task, or at least one that involves a lot of time, patience and know-how.

Turkish artist Selcuk Yilmaz apparently has an abundance of all three, because his metal lion statue titled Aslan took him only ten months to complete and looks absolutely amazing. Aslan is larger than life and weighs 550 pounds, and each piece was hand cut and hammered by Selcuk, proving that he has the heart of a lion and a limitless supply of scrap metal!

Somehow, I don't think any of these fun facts will tip their opinions much, because while they are interesting, they don't give the whole story. Still, alums have some great stories to tell!

Police Rescue Man from Snow Fort

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST

Police in Hermantown, Minnesota, responded quickly and saved a man's life after his snow fort collapsed on him. And his dog. Josh Toms and his dog Leo were inside the snow fort he built when the roof fell in, trapping both of them with little breathing room. The weight of the snow kept Toms from escaping.

Outside the fort was Toms’ son, Ian. "It was like, really, really scary because I didn't know what was happening," Ian said.

Ian then remembered what Toms had told him an hour before: "You first call 911 and then you come back and you start shoveling. But I was like, 'don't worry this never happens.'"

But this time it did.

Ian said "I was like ‘oh, he's just going to stand up,’ but he didn't stand up. So I ran inside to call 911."

Within 15 minutes, police arrived and pulled both Toms and Leo from the snow. -via Arbroath

Monowi, Nebraska. Population: 1.

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

(Photo: Roadtrippers)

Monowi, Nebraska has only one resident. By population, it's the smallest incorporated municipality in the United States.

(Photo: Roadtrippers)

This is its only resident: Elsie Eiler. She's the mayor, librarian and bartender. Austin Coop of Roadtrippers has a fascinating write-up about Ms. Eiler and her little town. You can read it here.

In the 1930s, Monowi had a population of 150. It slowly faded away. The 2000 US Census listed a population of 2 residents: Ms. Eiler and her late husband Rudy. Now it's just her.

That can come in handy sometimes. When Ms. Eiler wanted to open a bar, she gave herself a liquor license in her capacity as mayor.

There's also a little library, which Ms. Eiler maintains herself. I'd love to see it. Small town libraries are fun places to visit on road trips.

Our Lenin Soviet Propaganda Kids Book From 1934

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST

Back in the good old days of Communism the art was hip to be square, the statues were crazy huge and the kids were allowed to march around in the square. Dressed in smart little uniforms with their heads all full of that Red propaganda, what is a Soviet kid to read during story hour?

Here’s a copy of Our Lenin, so they can get the back story on their mighty leader Joseph Stalin and learn how long it took him to grow that sweet moustache. Freshly translated into English in 1934 by the American Communist Party, Our Lenin is jam packed with armed conflicts, corruption and, of course, Lenin looking all stoic and heroic.

8 Ways To Get A Fictional High

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST

One way to set up your dystopian fantasy the way you want it is to use drugs. No, that's not what I meant, although plenty of authors do. This is about using custom-designed drugs in your novel. A fictional drug can have any effect you want it to, which can shape the setting or even drive the plot. In many fantasy worlds, there is someone, somewhere, who uses an addictive and highly-coveted mind-altering substance that doesn't exist in the real world. For example:

1. Milk Plus from A Clockwork Orange

Alex and his three droogs, Pete, George, and Drim enjoyed going to the Korova Milk Bar for a drink or three of Milk Plus before a night of the old ultra violence. Only instead of normal mixers like strawberry powder or chocolate syrup, this milk-based cocktail contained a variety of fictional narcotics, such as vellocet, synthernesc, or drencrom. To really add a touch of class, the drink is served in a woman-shaped glass with convenient nipple spouts. Even better? You can give it to your kids because the narcotics in Milk Plus weren't controlled.

Which is one of the reasons that A Clockwork Orange was the third most-disturbing book I read as a teenager. Read the rest of the list at HuffPo Books.

These Canes Function As Furniture As Well

Posted: 22 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

Anyone who has to use a cane knows how useful they are, but Lanzavecchia + Wai (the same team that brought us the delightfully fun Rocking Bench) discovered a way to make using a cane around the house even more useful. There are three models of the Together Cane -the I-cane, which features a laptop or iPad desk, the T-cane, that can be used as a tea tray, and the U-cane, can be used to carry and store magazines and/or crafting supplies.

And so the elderly don't have to lift up the loaded up canes, they come with wheels, which are presumably tight enough to prevent the wheels from slipping out from under the user.

Thai Military Drill Performance

A drill team from the Royal Thai Navy performs during a Royal Thai Armed Forces Day event in the Sattahip District of Thailand on January 18th. The impressive choreography is set to "The Final Countdown" by Europe. The choice of "It's a Small World" may seem a bit strange to American ears, but it probably doesn't have the same Disney connotation to those who haven't been to the theme park. -via Daily Picks and Flicks
