| Techno Thriller And Terminator Prequel- The Awareness Posted: 09 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST Here’s the story they didn’t tell you in The Terminator movies, TV shows and video games, the story of what happened when a hapless janitor came across a sentient Skynet AI warning of impending doom, and all android hell was about to break loose. The Awareness has a slow build to the end, and very little sci-fi tech considering it’s supposed to be a precursor to The Terminator, but the creator of the short film, known simply as Henry, tells the tale nobody ever knew they wanted to see, and does it with a gritty edge befitting the computer program that caused the fall of humanity. | Fadiouth, An Island Made of Clam Shells Posted: 09 Jan 2014 01:00 AM PST
Fadiouth is an artificial island off the coast of Senegal. It’s made almost entirely of clam shells. People living in the area built it over generations of clam harvesting. This was their shell dump. Now it’s large enough to support houses, though it’s most widely known for its Christian cemetery. Visitors can go there over a 400-meter long wooden bridge. As they walk through the streets and by the graves they can hear and feel the shells crunch beneath their feet. -via Amusing Planet |
| Posted: 09 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST Get ready to see an adorably cute and furry baby! The two-month old yet-unnamed polar bear at the Toronto Zoo drinks milk six times a day, and is developing like a little champ. The cub is being hand-reared after his two siblings died shortly after birth. He's growing teeth and whiskers, and here you can see him learning how to walk. He's also working on his adorable tiny bear roar! -via Time Newsfeed |
| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST Long ago in a house just down the street, Han Fredricksen and Ellie Organa dreamed of travelling far, far away. When Han was unable to fix the hyperdrive, he had to escape Imperial forces trying to put him into a nursing home by tying balloons to his ship and floating away. That’s how I interpret this clever mashup illustration mixing the Pixar movie Up with Star Wars. It was made by James Hance, a delightful artist whose work we’ve featured extensively. -via James Hance |
| Abandoned Detroit Parking Garage Turned Into Street Art Gallery Posted: 08 Jan 2014 10:00 PM PST (Images via Sam Rodriguez/Photo 313) The Library Street Collective underwent a massive endeavor, dubbed The Z Project, to turn a 10-story parking garage in Detroit into a place for street art lovers to hang and take in the pieces rendered on the walls by street art superstars Dabs Myla, Pose, Revok, and Maya Hayuk, just to name a few. In keeping with street art tradition, something the Banksy-ites seem to have forgotten, the walls won't be torn down because the pieces aren’t for sale, they’re simply there to admire, inspire and make your eyeballs perspire. And once the artist decides their piece has had their time in the sun they can paint over it and create a new masterpiece. Via Hi-Fructose |
| Catching Up With Maru and Hanna Posted: 08 Jan 2014 09:00 PM PST It's been a while since we checked in with Maru and his younger sister Hanna. So what have these two cute kitties been up to? This video should sum up their recent exploits fairly well -essentially, the two have just been acting adorably, playing together and enjoying all kinds of fantastic boxes of all sizes. | Using Sand To Cast A Hexagonal Pewter Stool Posted: 08 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST Metal casting can involve a lot of expensive equipment, scorching heat and a lot of know-how, or you can simply do what artist Max Lamb does and bring your supplies to the local beach in Cornwall, England and cast stuff in the sand. Max uses primitive sand casting techniques, essentially making a mold by digging out the shape in sand then pouring molten pewter into the sand mold to get his finished product, which has a shape and texture co-created by Nature. His simple, whimsical works hearken back to a time when the end result didn’t have to look like it was computer generated, and casting in metal wasn’t seen as an archaic discipline. | The Simpsons House in LEGO is Now Official Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST LEGO company officials, perhaps forced to adjust their PR schedule by a leaked photograph, have announced the debut of The Simpsons LEGO construction set. The playset will be available in LEGO stores and online in February, and will cost $199.99 in the US, $229.99 in Canada, and various prices in Europe. The set comes with six minifigs (the Simpson family and Ned Flanders), but the Simpsons line of minifigs will have 16 figures in all, and they will be made available in May for US$3.99 each.

| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST At one time, it seemed silly to think that birds descended from dinosaurs. Now it's pretty well accepted, even though it's still hard to picture T. rex with feathers. As more fossils and more species are discovered, we get a glimpse into the weird twists and turns on the evolutionary path from reptile to bird. There are certain features we think of as avian, such as gizzard in place of teeth. But fossils of Hongshanornis, a bird only discovered in the 21st century, had both. According to a 2014 report on the most recently-found fossil, Hongshanornis has small teeth in both the upper and lower jaw.

| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST Now you can truly say “this video game is Kafka-esque” without sounding like a vapid hipster, because The Franz Kafka Video game is on its way to your Castle. You will feel the Metamorphosis as you attempt to survive The Trial of playing this game, deep in Contemplation about Amerika and The Judgment of your friends if you’re unable to beat the game. This brainy game was developed by A Hunger Artist by the name of Denis Galanin, a Russian game developer whose previous game release was based on Hamlet and who would probably write A Letter To His Father if he ever stood Before The Law, accused of making a mindless game. | Polar Vortex, You Freeze My Cortex Posted: 08 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST German DJ Flula Borg responds to the recent cold weather with a song complaining about it. Watching this, I cannot help but think how well Flula would fit in on an SNL Sprockets segment. "Now is the time when we dance!" Poor Flula. I heard it got down in the mid-60s in Los Angeles this week. -via Viral Viral Videos |

| A Random Act of Kindness by a Dairy Queen Employee Posted: 08 Jan 2014 02:00 PM PST
Joey Prusak, 19, works at a Dairy Queen restaurant in Hopkins, Minnesota. In September, a blind man purchased a meal at the counter. While paying, he accidentally dropped a 20-dollar bill on the floor. The woman standing behind him in line snatched it and put it in her pocket. Prusak approached the woman and asked her to give it back. She refused and began cussing at him. He told her to leave, which she did, while keeping the money. Later Prusak spoke with the blind customer and handed him a 20-dollar bill from his own pocket. All of this might have passed by without further attention but for an email that another customer sent to Dairy Queen’s management. She described the incident, which promptly went viral. Since then, Prusak has gotten a lot of positive attention, including an invitation from Warren Buffett to attend a shareholders meeting of his company, Berkshire Hathaway. Berkshire Hathaway owns Dairy Queen. -via The Presurfer |
| Getting to Know Alternative Bananas Posted: 08 Jan 2014 01:00 PM PST So you may have already heard that the banana we've all come to love, the Cavendish, is likely to become endangered during our lifetimes thanks to the highly contagious Panama Disease. While that stinks, it doesn't mean the end of bananas all together. Instead, we'll just switch to a new cultivar like our grandparents did when they moved from the Gros Michel to the Cavendish. So what are our options banana-wise? WebEcoist has the answer with a rundown of 7 different bananas we all might be eating in the near future. The ones above are the ae ae bananas that grow in Hawaii and Florida. I don't know how they taste, but they sure look cool. |
| This Goofy Railroad Design from 1894 Used Wind to Move Posted: 08 Jan 2014 12:00 PM PST In their 1894 book The Coming Railroad, George Nation Chase and Henry William Kirchner wrote that America’s rail system was the most essential piece of technology to maintain modern life. But the rail system had reached the limits of its capacity for transportation. It was expensive and inefficient. In order to increase the carrying capacity of railroads to keep up with the demands of a growing population, the United States should switch to wind-powered locomotives. The authors called their proposal the “The Chase-Kirchner aerodromic system of transportation.” In it, cars would rest on elevated tracks. Each car would have “banks of aeroplanes” between 2,000 and 4,000 square feet in area. These planes would catch the air and, supplemented by electric motors, provide movement. -via Retronaut |

| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 10:00 AM PST Two years ago, Ann Reardon wowed the internet with her cake shaped like the Instagram logo. With every slice through the core, you got the full symbol. This cake is similar, but shows Larry, Twitter’s iconic bird. The calls it a “surprise inside dessert.” To make your own, get a tall, roughly cylindrical container. Print out a template for your logo, sized so that it fits easily within the container. Get 0.3 millimeter-thick aluminum flashing. Mold it into the shape of logo. Then mix a chocolate cremeux, which apparently is something like a gelatinous mousse. Also make a white chocolate mousse for the white background, an orange glaze for the crust and a pate de sucre for the base. You can find the full recipe here. -via Foodiggity |
| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 09:30 AM PST The average temperature in Bethel, in western Alaska, is below freezing, although summers see temperatures in the 50s for short time. Yet the town's sole farmer, Tim Meyers, grows root vegetables, greens, and even strawberries on his 17 acres. The 6,000 residents of Bethel enjoy relatively fresh local organic produce in a state where 95% of food is imported.
It's not as easy as he makes it out to be. Meyers' growing method involves two years of soil preparation, most of which is taken up just thawing the topsoil. That's a significant investment. But Meyers believes that if other farmers start out small, they can grow crops in permafrost and make Alaska more self-sustaining. Read about Meyers and his growing enterprise at Modern Farmer. -via Digg |
| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 09:00 AM PST Two and a half years ago, Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling enchanted and disturbed the internet with their delightfully weird and slightly terrifying short film Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared. Here's their sequel with the same puppet cast which has somehow survived the madness and maintained a functional level of sanity. The subject of this film is time. What is it? What does time do? What are our limitations within time? -via Nerdcore |

| Medical Student Saves Life of an Actor Pretending to Have a Health Problem Posted: 08 Jan 2014 08:00 AM PST
Medical schools hire actors to pretend to have certain ailments. Medical students then attempt to diagnose those afflictions. Ryan Jones, a medical student at the University of Virginia, examined one of them, Jim Malloy. Malloy was pretending to have an aortic aneurysm. Jones noticed that he was doing a very convincing job of it. He showed all of the symptoms of an actual aortic aneurysm. Sometimes medical schools hire people who have real medical problems in order to make these simulations more realistic. But this was not one of those times. Jones informed the attending physician, who suggested that Malloy get further tests. Malloy did so and later had surgery to correct the problem in his heart. By calling early attention to the problem, the medical student had saved his life. -via Nag on the Lake |
| Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST Some people find it easier to deal with very cold weather than others. Tyler Langford moved from his native Georgia to Chicago to follow his dreams, just in time to experience a polar vortex. He's having a hard time dealing with the simple task of getting from his home to work. Along the way he describes how the difference in weather feels to a Southern boy. It's not pretty. -via Daily Picks and Flicks |
| It's So Cold That an Escaped Prisoner Turned Himself in Posted: 08 Jan 2014 07:00 AM PST
On Monday, he walked into the office of a local motel and asked the clerk to call the police. Vick had had enough of the winter storm and wanted to get warm. Paramedics briefly examined him before police returned him to prison. -via Legal Juice |
| Kids Who Have Mastered The Art Of Hide And Seek Posted: 08 Jan 2014 06:30 AM PST Playing a game of hide and seek as a child usually involved hiding from the other little kids who were hiding along with you and would give away your position by talking, either that or finding a hiding spot so ultimate that nobody ever came looking for you and you eventually had to pack it in and say "I'm off to guzzle a juice box-game over!" The kids in this series of photos, however, live by a very stealthy motto- the best place to hide is in plain sight, and they’re trying to perfect their ninja vanishing skills before they hit the playground, in case they need to make a quick getaway from whoever is IT. |

| Visiting the Alps? Stay in the Amazing UFOgel Posted: 08 Jan 2014 05:30 AM PST The name UFOgel is a combination of the words "UFO" and "Vogel," which means "bird" in German. And this lovely rental home is a perfect combination of a space ship and a birdhouse. Best of all, the tiny minimalist home is situated right in the Austrian alps and the massive window in the living room provides for an amazing view. The small house can sleep up to eight, though four would probably be more comfortable, and it is equipped with all the comforts of home including a wood burning stove, a kitchen, a spacious shower and a large living room. You can learn more about the beautiful house and see more great pictures over at Homes and Hues, and if you love small, stylish homes, you'll also love the great Jenga House, the Japan House and the Little Concrete House on the Prairie. |
