Register Today! | | Today's Top Stories Enterprises grappling with mobility will need to master 10 mobile technologies and capabilities over the next three years, according to Nick Jones, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. One of the 10 capabilities is enterprise mobility management, which includes mobile device and application management, app wrapping and containerization, and enterprise file synchronization and sharing. "Such tools will mature, grow in scope and eventually address a wide range of mobile management needs across all popular OSs on smartphones, tablets and PCs," Jones explains. Another capability in application development tools that can support at least three platforms--Android, iOS and Windows--and three architectures--native, hybrid and mobile Web. "Tool selection will be a complex balancing act, trading off many technical and nontechnical issues (such as productivity versus vendor stability), and most large organizations will need a portfolio of several tools to deliver to the architectures and platforms they require," writes Jones. Reflecting the need to support multi-architecture apps, Jones expects HTML5 to become a vital technology for enterprises as the popularity of mobile Web and hybrid apps increase. At the same time, the Gartner analyst admits that HTML5 is fragmented and immature and poses implementation and security risks. In addition, enterprises will need to understand and incorporate wearable devices into their tool set, despite the potential security, safety and privacy risks. "These gadgets will communicate with mobile apps to deliver information in new ways and enable a wide range of products and services in areas such as sport, fitness, fashion, hobbies and healthcare, says Jones. On the wireless network side of the equation, enterprises will need to deploy Wi-Fi networks, applications and products using the most advanced standards. "Demands on Wi-Fi infrastructure will increase as more Wi-Fi-enabled devices appear in organizations, as cellular offloading becomes more popular, and as applications such as location sensing demand denser access-point placement. The opportunities enabled by new standards and the performance required by new applications will require many organizations to revise or replace their Wi-Fi infrastructure," observes Jones. Other mobile technologies and capabilities in the top ten must haves include advanced mobile user experience design, high-precision location sensing, mobile-connected smart objects, LTE and LTE-A cellular technologies, and metrics and monitoring tools. Register Today! | Emerging markets are putting downward pressure on smartphone prices, as mobile users trade in their feature phones for smartphones, estimates market research firm IDC. "Converting feature phone sales to smartphone sales implies a relentless push towards low cost," says Simon Baker, program manager for mobile phones at IDC CEMA. Nearly half of the mobile handsets sold across the world have retail prices of less than $100 without sales tax, with two-thirds of those having prices of less than $50, according to IDC figures. India, for example, represents more than one-quarter of the global feature phone market, and nearly half of the smartphones shipped to the country last year cost less than $120 per phone. Other emerging markets with high feature phone penetration include the Middle East and Africa, Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America. "This is a very big market opportunity. Some 660 million feature phones were shipped last year, which could add two-thirds to the size of the current global smartphone market," says Baker. "The opportunity gets larger the lower the price falls. If you take retail prices without sales tax, in 2013 nearly three-quarters of the $100-$125 price tier was already accounted for by smartphones. Within $75-$100 the proportion was down to just over half, and between $50-$75 it was not much more than a third," Baker adds. To compete in the lower-priced smartphone market, manufacturers have begun moving their manufacturing to countries with lower labor costs, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, IDC notes. Video session stalling rates across all wireless network types ranged from 40.8 percent of videos played in the U.S. to 73.3 percent of videos played in India. As a result, half of the consumers surveyed in each country said they experienced low quality, lagging or "buffering" when they watched videos "often" or "all the time." To conduct the study, Opera combined global data from its Skyfire unit on mobile video network loads with bandwidth test data from wireless network performance firm OpenSignal, using data from late 2013 on global networks. Opera worked with On Device Research to survey consumers in the five countries about their personal experiences with mobile video. Opera has an economic interest in uncovering mobile video stalling issues because it provides mobile video optimization through its Rocket Optimizer product. Still, the study results are informative as more mobile content is being delivered in the video format. The pCell technology will work in existing devices that support LTE. "That will shock people. It means we have hundreds of millions of devices out there that are ready to go," says Perlman.
