5 Iconic Buildings Built with LEGO Bricks

Posted: 17 Mar 2014 03:00 AM PDT

This LEGO Sydney Opera House is big enough so that LEGO minifigs can come inside and sit in the audience! It was built by Ryan McNaut, also known as The Brickman. Geeks Are Sexy has a roundup of architectural LEGO projects, builds that recreate the Blackpoll Tower, the Coliseum, the Empire State Building, the Sydney Opera House, and the Tower of Orthanc (which is fictional, but still iconic). Some of the projects come in more than one size, but all are lovingly crafted and well worth seeing!

Clever Bookcase Has a Built-In Folding Ladder

Posted: 17 Mar 2014 12:00 AM PDT

I love this bookcase! Karen King, a designer in Toronto, developed Higher Ground, a combination bookcase and ladder. Pull on the front to expose three steps. The whole thing is made with sustainably harvested wood or reclaimed lumber.

It looks like a great way to use vertical space in a room with a high ceiling.

Soviet Hobbit Illustrations

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT

A 1976 edition of The Hobbit published in the Soviet Union has illustrations by M. Belomlinskij. They reflect the style of the time, although they also somewhat resemble woodcuts. Of course, you are familiar enough with the characters that you recognize them even without the text, which would be in Russian anyway. See more illustrations at Retronaut. -via mental_floss

Why, raptor? Because your friends are really cold-blooded, that's why. Once they got their claws on the tubs of frozen eclairs, they didn't need you anymore. Enjoy your early winter.

15 Delightful Facts About Saint Patrick’s Day

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT

We’ll all being wearing green on Monday for St. Patricks Day, but how much do you really know about the holiday? It’s both a religious and national holiday in Ireland, revolving around the evangelist who converted the Irish in the fifth century. Here’s some trivia you should know:

8. There’s a Reason for The Shamrocks

How did the shamrock become associated with Saint Patrick? According to Irish legend, the saint used the three-leafed plant as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland.

12. It Could have Been Saint Maewyn’s Day

According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick wasn’t originally called Patrick. His birth name was Maewyn Succat, but he changed his name to Patricius after becoming a priest.

You'd Never Guess What This 16-Year-Old Teenager Couldn't Buy At The Supermarket

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT

The answer is: teaspoons. That's right, a pack of teaspoon.

Yvette Whelan was frustrated that his stepson Liam and his brother kept on losing her teaspoons, so she sent him to a local market to buy a pack of teaspoons.

But staff at Tesco in Haslingden refused to sell the pack of teaspoons to Liam because he was under the age of 18.

"Knives, forks I can understand but teaspoons? No," Yvette said to the BBC, "There's just no common sense." Liam had to go home empty handed and was "really embarrassed" by the incident, she added.

Tesco later apologized for the incident, saying "We do include a till prompt for proof of age on our self-service tills for some items. We ask our colleagues to use their judgment as to whether this should be applied. In this instance, this was not followed and we apologized to our customer for any inconvenience caused."

Dying the Chicago River Green for St. Patricks Day

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Every year, the Chicago River is dyed green for the St. Patricks Day parade. This time-lapse video taken yesterday may seem like it’s in black-and-white at first, but that’s just the colors of the city. It’s a slight shock when the green starts! The dumping was done by members of the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130. Here’s a view from a little closer to the action.

The area of the greening was restricted somewhat by construction further up the river. The green only lasted for the day, but brightened things up for the parade.

Star Trek Foods for Every Occasion

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Chris-Rachael Oseland, the Kitchen Overlord, specializes in preparing geeky foods, from Wonder Woman potatoes to Alien facehugger eggs. She often does thematic weeks focused on particular franchises, such as the recent Dune Week.

Most recently, she's held a Star Trek week with custom recipes inspired by the greatest of all science fiction franchises. Pictured above is her Klingon blood orange pull-apart bread. It's made with blood oranges, not Klingon blood--not that I doubt Chris-Rachael's prowess with a bat'leth.

Here's her meatloaf made to resemble (but not taste like) a horta.

Mama Horta's eggs look just like those in the classic episode "Devil in the Dark," but are actually silver Sixlets, a type of hard candy. That's okay, because baby hortas are sweet.

The Ferengi are among the most fascinating species in the Star Trek universe. They were nicely developed by writers in Deep Space Nine. The Ferengi are flawed in some ways, but I think that they are the most realistic society described in Star Trek. It's not a coincidence that a Ferengi has been my online avatar for years.

So I'm especially delighted by Chris-Rachael's Ferengi ears made with canned cinnamon bun dough. Chris-Rachael calls making them "disgustingly easy." Be sure to add the orange frosting as ear wax, which is where the intense flavor comes from.

You can view more recipes from Star Trek Week at Kitchen Overlord. And if you love Star Trek food, then you may also wish to explore Food Replicator, a food blog devoted to duplicating dishes shown or mentioned on Star Trek.

Functionally Obsolete

Rare Photos From The Rothschild Illuminati Ball In 1972

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT

The Rothschilds are one of the wealthiest families in the world, and they were known for throwing wicked costume parties back in the day, with only the most famous and distinguished guests in attendance.

However, very few photos have surfaced from their decadent soirees, and those photos which have been released reveal how the one percent get their party on.

In 1972 Baron Guy De Rothschild and his wife Marie-Helene hosted a Surreal Face themed party at the Chateau de Ferrieres, where their famous guests, including Salvador Dali and Audrey Hepburn, were asked to wear "black tie, long dresses and surrealists heads".

The guests didn't disappoint, arriving with wildly decorated heads and austere garb, but it seems all the crazy facepaint and liquor in the world couldn’t liven up such a stiff crowd!

Early in the morning of Nov. 1, 2011, a car ran into and over a fire hydrant in San Diego. The pressure from the erupting water line kept the back end of a Toyota Corolla lifted 10 feet off the ground for hours.

The driver was nowhere to be found, leading police to suspect that the car had been stolen.

A Collection Of Men's Hairstyles From The 1970s

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

People made some bad style choices in the 1970s- leisure suits, Earth shoes, zippered and belted jumpsuits, and lemon yellow polyester slacks all come to mind as fairly common fashions that were fairly hideous.

But whether you escaped the decade fashionably unscathed, or you have a hideous Disco phase among the skeletons in your closet, chances are bad 70s style affected your look in one way- a bad hairstyle. We've all had our share of bad hair, but guys really got the short end of the stick during the 70s when it came to coiffures.

Seeing these bad hair pics will either make you appreciate your own hairstyle, or give you an idea for a new direction to take with your hairdo.

Pygmy Tyrannosaur Found in Arctic

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT

A new dinosaur that was a small but close relative of T. rex has been found in Alaska, of all places. Nanuqsaurus hoglundi was only about 20 feet long (shown in blue in the above graph) and lived about 70 million years ago. Paleontologist Tony Fiorillo was part of a team that gathered the bones in 2006 while looking for a different dinosaur in the Prince Creek formation, and only later examined them.

In N. hoglundi's day, northern Alaska—then part of an ancient subcontinent called Larimidia—had weather like modern-day Seattle: seasonally cold but not frigid. The dinosaur likely would have wandered in the valleys beneath majestic snow-capped peaks and hunted other dinosaurs, including a duck-billed species, amid towering sequoias and flower-studded coastal plains, said Fiorillo, who received funding from the National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program.

Unlike Seattle, though, the Arctic was still a rough place, with long periods of darkness and light, as well as distinct seasons in which food wasn't readily available. For instance, prey species likely would have exploded in number during the summer, but then fallen off in the dark winter, leaving predators with little to eat.

The name Nanuqsaurus is derived from Nanuq, the Alaska Inupiat word meaning polar bear. Read more about the discovery at National Geographic News.

B-Roll Footage From The Muppets Most Wanted

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

The Muppets Most Wanted is about to hit theaters, treating legions of puppet loving people to a new big screen adventure starring their favorite fleece covered friends.

Filming an epic movie like The Muppets Most Wanted means lots of B-roll footage and scenes removed from the final edit of the film, and for fans of the filmmaking process these unused scenes give us insight into the entire process, and shows how a scene starring a puppet actually comes together.

But since this is actual B-roll footage from the film there are all kinds of spoilers, so don’t watch if you’re worried about spoilers ruining your Muppet movie viewing experience, just come back and watch the clips after you've seen the film!

Goodnight Clock

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Goodnight Moon, written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd, has been a bedtime staple for over 50 years. What the authors did not expect when the book was published in 1947 was that the internet would allow geeks all over the world to deconstruct the beloved childhood story. Burrito Justice studied the pictures in the book and calculated that the little bunny’s bedtime ritual takes an hour and ten minutes, starting at 7:00 and ending at 8:10. For small children, it often takes that long.

But reaction to the post brought up the progression of the moon across the sky -how did that sync up with the clock? After another analysis of the illustrations, it was determined that the moon’s astronomical progression does not match up with the clock! There are also observations about cross promotion of Brown’s books in Goodnight Moon and her other publications, in the post at Burrito Justice. -via Metafilter

An earlier calculation of the chronological length of the book used only the moon's progression and not the clock on the mantle. A bedtime ritual of six minutes was inferred, which is wildly optimistic, as any parent will tell you.

Steve McCurry's Photographic Vision Of Ethiopia

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Photographer Steve McCurry has an epic vision which he has been happily sharing with the world for over 30 years, and his knack for revealing the heart and soul of his subjects makes him the perfect person to call when you need help promoting a humanistic cause.

This photo journey took Steve to Ethiopia, more specifically to the remote Omo Valley region, where he was invited to capture the plight of the Omo children and help spread the word about a great cause.

The Omo Child charity takes care of children who are considered mingi (cursed) by their tribe and either sent to die in the desert or ritualistically murdered.

These unwanted mingi children are given a home and an education thanks to the efforts of Lale Lubuko and photographer John Rowe, founders of Omo Child, and with Steve McCurry’s intimate and illustrative photo series showing the world who their donations are benefitting the Omo children will hopefully receive the funding help they so desperately need.

Voice Recognition Failure

Posted: 16 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Markus Johansen is Norwegian, but he is speaking English in this Audi, which is either a rental car or a demo. The car speaks English but has a definite problem with accents. The general consensus is that the car will do anything to avoid playing Nickleback.

But it makes you think: How useful is voice recognition technology globally? Besides the many different languages, there are many accents within each language even among native speakers. And those who speak whatever language is used as a second language are often just plain out of luck. -via Daily of the Day
