| Your Favorite TV Cars as Transformers Posted: 19 Mar 2014 02:00 AM PDT The Delorean from Back to the Future Darren Rawlings, an animator and illustrator in Canada, imagines a world in which all TV shows and movies are spinoffs of The Transformers. Which is, of course, as it should be. His series “If They Could Transform” takes the most famous on-screen cars and envisions them as transforming fighting robots. I am left wondering which are Autobots and which are Decepticons. | What Rhymes with Niagara Falls? Posted: 19 Mar 2014 01:00 AM PDT Dave McKinley of WGRZ in Buffalo, New York, wrote a poem about Niagara Falls and the fact that it is not frozen. Many folks heard that it was and came out on a cold, cold day to see the phenomenon. The water is still running, and it was a lovely sight with all the snow and ice surrounding it. And the poem is clever. -via Daily Picks and Flicks | ||||||||

| Posted: 18 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT Wittenoom, Australia, lies in the Pilbara region of the Western Australian desert, but you won’t find it on modern maps. The name has even been erased from road signs. But at one time, it was a thriving mining town. From 1943 to the mine's closure in 1966, more than 165,000 tons of asbestos were extracted and shipped out of Wittenoom. However, poor public knowledge about the dangers of asbestos allowed the toxic dust to be spread throughout the town; it clung to the miners' clothing, infecting homes, gardens, and schools. Of the 20,000 men, women, and children who worked or lived in Wittenoom in these decades, it is predicted that roughly 25% will die of asbestos-related diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, or mesothelioma. It wasn't until 1978, however, that growing health concerns would lead to a full-scale evacuation. Since the evacuation, the Australian government has gone to great lengths to erase the town from maps and even history. As a 2013 flier said, "Visiting Wittenoom is not worth risking your life." However, a few stubborn longtime residents are reportedly still living there. The story of Wittenoom is one of Five Ghost Towns Abandoned after Disasters that you can read at Atlas Obscura. | ||||||||
| Posted: 18 Mar 2014 10:00 PM PDT It’s easiest to learn a language when you’re a child. So get your kids off to a good start by teaching them a language in the Game of Thrones universe. It’s easy and fun with these videos by Muzzy, a language video training program. And there’s more! In addition to Dothraki, children can also learn Valyrian, White Walker and Hodor. The last one, is, of course, increasingly important in international commerce. This video by Nacho Punch parodies the commercials of Muzzy, a children’s educational series that teaches foreign languages. | Onion Reveals Its True Evil Face Posted: 18 Mar 2014 09:00 PM PDT This is why cutting an onion makes you cry. It's because it's evil* *Actually it's because of cutting an onion breaks its cells open, thus releasing enzymes that turns sulfenic acid into propanethiol S-oxide, a volatile sulfur compound that wafts up to your eye, react with the water in your tears to form sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid (the chemical that disfigured Gotham district attorney Harvey Dent and turned him into Two-Face in the Batman comics- see? Comics are scientifically useful!) burns, so your eyes produce more tears to wash it away. In short, onions make you cry because it's evil. | ||||||||
| Watch Billy Dee Williams Dance to Disco Star Wars Music Posted: 18 Mar 2014 08:00 PM PDT Billy Dee Williams played Lando Calrissian in the original Star Wars movies. He recently reprised that role on the reality television show Dancing with the Stars. Here he is dancing with Emma Slater, who is appropriately coiffed with Princess Leia buns. They cha-cha-cha to a medley of Star Wars tunes, including the title and cantina themes. Before you condemn the judges: keep in mind that if the Emperor has a Death Star pointed at your planet, you’ll follow his lead, too. The audience should be more understanding. -via Tor | ||||||||
| The Mystery of the Sea Unicorn Posted: 18 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT At one time, Vikings made a lot of money by selling narwhal horns to European royalty as unicorn horns. Of course, they were secretive about where they obtained the horns. We know more about narwhals now, a lot more. They are a type of whale in which one tooth grows into a long, straight tusk -but only in the males. But what purpose does it serve? A new experiment points to the theory that the tusk is a sense organ.
An experiment in which scientists manipulated the water around narwhal’s tusks appears to prove the theory. Read about it and a whole lot more we now know about narwhals at The Loom.
| Twitter Bot Pranks Gullible People with Hilariously Fake Facts Posted: 18 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT As Abraham Lincoln famously said, “The problem with quotes from the internet is that they’re often fake.” The internet is littered with falsehoods that spread quickly because they can be easily retweeted or reposted with a couple of mouse clicks. To my shame, I’ve been occasionally suckered by them.* There are widely-followed Twitter accounts, such as @HistoryInPics and @HistoricalPics, that have been accused of taking manipulated photos and passing them off as real or adding wildly inaccurate captions. Rebecca Onion of Slate described the problems that these Twitter accounts pose here. Eric Drass, an artist, agrees. There’s a problem with images that are unsourced or fake images circulating the internet, becoming facts in the minds of people who don’t know any better. To highlight the problem, he created @factbot1, a program that automatically generates random facts, finds relevant images, then tweets them. -via 22 Words *One of the hardest research projects I’ve ever had was, oddly enough, the 2013 Neatorama Desk Calendar. It’s filled with 365 bits of interesting trivia. I found that the majority of neat trivia that I uncovered didn’t stand up to fact-checking. | ||||||||

| This Elegant Library Is Literally Guarded by a Colony of Bats Posted: 18 Mar 2014 04:00 PM PDT
And I mean literally as in literally and not figuratively (it is now necessary to be clear about that). This is the library of the National Palace in Mafra, Portugal. It's a beautiful building constructed by and for the now abolished Kings of Portugal. The palace has a library that would make any booklover quiver in joy. The volumes are well-preserved, in part due to the resident bats. Yes, bats. The staff permits bats to live in the library. They come out at night and feed on book-eating bugs. | Hands Are Symbols Of Desires And Fears Posted: 18 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT Appendages are growing out of all sorts of strange places in this creep-tastic series of digitally manipulated photos by Babak Hosseiny and Jeffrey Vanhoute entitled “O les mains”. There are fingers where hair should be, angry arms ordering a hand to pull back on some poor guy’s face by his eyelids, and all sorts of appendage shaped protrusions in all kinds of wrong places. Hosseiny was influenced by a Wittgenstein book he'd read about hands being the symbols of a person’s fears and desires, and together with Belgian photographer Jeffrey Vanhoute he brought this idea to light in a disturbingly surreal manner. The images in the series were created using traditional studio photos of the subjects, which were then digitally composited together, creating the desired, and decidedly creepy, effect. | Life Satisfaction as Ranked by Country Posted: 18 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT Where does your country rank in overall life satisfaction? According to this article over at Quartz, data from the Gallup World Poll as presented in Paris-based think tank Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Society at a Glance 2014 report, 15 countries are ranked above the United States. The top 10 countries reporting high life satisfaction are:
Life satisfaction, according to the report, is determined by both economic development as well as people's diverse experiences and living conditions. There's a broad regional/cultural grouping as four out of the top five countries are Nordic. The report noted that, on average across OECD countries, women report slightly higher levels of life satisfaction than men, and that life satisfaction decreases with age. The bottom 10 countries are
If you're wondering, the poll asked 1,000 to 4,000 residents of a country the following: "Imagine an eleven-rung ladder where the bottom (0) represents the worst possible life for you and the top (10) represents the best possible life for you. On which step of the ladder do you feel you personally stand at the present time?"
| Posted: 18 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT A luxury yacht named the Victoria, estimated to be worth at least £1million, tried to negotiate the Richmond Bridge in London on Sunday. It did not go well.
