| Posted: 26 Mar 2014 04:00 AM PDT There’s a really big weiner at the Miami-Dade County Fair. In other news, Miami-Dade County has a fair in March. This hot dog may soon be in the Guinness Book as the largest hot dog ever.
The hot dog can be bought, too -he’ll make one for your party for just $1,000. The fair hot dog was weighed, photographed, and sliced up and sold for a dollar a sample, with proceeds going to charity. -via Time Newsfeed
| Cormac McCarthy’s The Road: A Picture Book Posted: 26 Mar 2014 03:00 AM PDT The Road is a horrifying post-apocalyptic novel by Cormac McCarthy. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2007. It kept me up at night when I read it. So maybe it would be a great bedtime story for kids! Jerry Puryear turned The Road into a picture book. You can see photos of it at his blog, as well as his children’s versions of Michael Chabon’s Wonder Boys, Jonathan Frazen’s The Corrections and Donna Tart’s The Goldfinch. -via The Hairpin P.S. I just had a great merchandising idea: compose a cookbook inspired by The Road. | ||||||||
| How to Get A Free NeatoShop Tee Just By Supporting the Shop Posted: 26 Mar 2014 02:00 AM PDT We have a lot of NeatoShop contests simply because we're proud of our tees and want to spread the love. If you already own a NeatoShop tee of your own, then you know just how awesome they are. If you'd like to turn one shop into two, we now have a way for you to earn a free shirt just for sharing your love of our tees. All you have to do is take a picture of yourself in a shirt from the NeatoShop and then upload the image to our NeatoShop Facebook page. If we like the picture enough, we'll feature it as an official image for that design in the shop and in exchange, we'll reward you with a free tee shirt of your choice. If you keep taking pictures of your shirts, who knows, maybe a single NeatoShop tee will turn into a whole wardrobe. Obviously without seeing your pictures, we can't guarantee that we will or won't use your picture, but here are a few tips if you want to maximize your chances of getting featured:
Just imagine you could find yourself into a My Friendly Neighbor tee or any other great NeatoShop design simply for supporting the shop and the blog!
| Death Scent: The Rotting Zombie Cologne Posted: 26 Mar 2014 01:00 AM PDT When the zombie apocalypse comes, it will be important to hide your living human smell. In the first season of the TV series The Walking Dead, Rick and Glenn smeared rotting flesh on their bodies to mask their scent. It only worked until the rain started. Later in the series, Michonne walked among zombies by surrounding herself with jawless zombies, which is not always feasible. What’s a doomsday prepper to do? | ||||||||
| These Adorable Little Cat Sweets Are Good Enough to Eat Posted: 26 Mar 2014 12:00 AM PDT Rocket News 24 reports about a Japanese woman named Caroline who makes cute cat candies. She prepares them every year for Cat Day, a Japanese holiday held on February 22. They are called nerikiri, which is a traditional sweet made by mixing white bean paste and glutinous rice. She shapes and paints them into kitties who love to play with their food--and yours. You can see more photos of them here. -via That's Nerdalicious! | Photos: Carolinei | ||||||||

| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT Neatoramanaut Jean Cotton sent us some pictures of her dog Squiggy! Squiggy is a hairless Chinese Crested and Japanese Chin mix. He is a local celebrity in Exeter, Rhode Island, where he is considered "cute and unusual looking."
Squiggy was the winner of the online voting competition of the Sonoma-Marin Fair World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in 2013. Voting in the 2014 contest should begin sometime in April. You can see more pictures of Squiggy at his Facebook page. Send your pet pictures to tips@neatorama to be included in the pet blog Lifestyle of the Cute and Cuddly!
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 10:00 PM PDT Why head to the lake when you can just step out your front door to go fishing? YouTube user Kyle The Fish Whisperer has found thriving fishing holes in storm drains near his home. He’s found bass, bluegill, catfish, and catfish in the drains. Check your own local sewer for fish and other edible wildlife and report back in the comments. -via 22 Words | ||||||||
| Berlin Iron: A Sure Sign of Patriotism Posted: 25 Mar 2014 09:00 PM PDT During the Napoleonic Wars, the King of Prussia asked loyal citizens to give up their gold and silver jewelry to finance the war effort. They did, but they also got something in exchange: jewelry made of iron. The black forged jewelry was not as valuable on the surface, but it made a statement in that the person wearing it was obviously a patriot who made a sacrifice to defeat Napoleon. Collectors Weekly talked to jewelry collector Agram.m about Berlin iron, its history, and what distinguishes it from other antique jewelry. | ||||||||
| The Coolest Thing Invented in Each State Posted: 25 Mar 2014 08:00 PM PDT For Delaware, it's Kevlar--the stuff used in bulletproof vests. For Idaho, it's television. South Carolina's claim to fame is the submarine. Each of the 50 states of the United States can claim to be the location for at least one great invention. This BuzzFeed video shows them all. Did any of them surprise you? Would you dispute the home of any of these inventions? | ||||||||
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT This is something I hadn’t paid much attention to, but apparently March is the biggest month for vasectomies. So much so that many clinics run advertised specials in March. Why? Because if a man is going to have a vasectomy anyway, scheduling it right before the NCAA tournament allows him to sit at home for a few days and watch basketball. That’s why Urology Specialty Care in Kentucky is offering a free pizza with a vasectomy, intend of the usual bag of frozen peas (but you’ll probably get those anyway). With Leather has a roundup of the many funny March Madness ads for vasectomy clinics, including videos. | ||||||||
| #RuinAChildrensBook Is the Funniest Hashtag on Twitter Today Posted: 25 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT Make a slight alteration to a classic work from children's literature. Sometimes just a single letter. The results are hilarious. If you're not on Twitter, feel free to add your own in the comments. | ||||||||
| Haikyo: The Culture of Urban Exploration in Japan Posted: 25 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT You’ve seen plenty of photography here by urban explorers who sneak into abandoned places to document them on film. In Japan, the hobby is called haikyo, which would translate to urban explorer, but the exact meaning is just a little different. Urban Ghosts talked to haikyoist Jordy Meow about exploring the architecture of Japan.
But that doesn’t mean no pictures are taken! Read the rest of the interview, and see quite a few of Meow’s best photos at Urban Ghosts.
| Firefighters Sing "Let It Go" from Frozen to Calm Little Girl Trapped in an Elevator Posted: 25 Mar 2014 04:00 PM PDT
During this stressful time, Kaelyn began to panic. One of the firefighters responded by playing on his smartphone the song "Let It Go" (embedded below) from the movie Frozen. The firefighters, John Keough and Scott Myette, sang along. Soon Kaelyn calmed down and joined them. NBC News describes the scene:
My 3-year old is singing "Let It Go" at this very moment, so I can see how this method would be effective. -via Amy Duncan | Photo: Kerr Family
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT Watch this, and try to remember where you've seen it before. You've seen it everywhere and nowhere! This video is based on a script at McSweeney’s and could be used to advertise …anything. It’s that generic, made completely of stock footage from Dissolve. So it's just like the brand videos companies pay really big bucks to produce, but afterward, you can't even remember what it was talking about. -via Boing Boing | ||||||||
| The Marvelous Merchandising of Evel Knievel Posted: 25 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT American daredevil Evel Knievel was a one-of-a-kind showman. There wasn’t a stunt he wouldn’t attempt, and he broke 430 bones over his career. He was also a marvel of merchandising. In just five years, the Ideal Toy Company sold $125 million worth of Knievel toys and other merchandise, as anything with the name on it would fly off the store shelves. That’s every kind of toy you could imagine, plus everything else from towels to popsicles. Take a look at some of the more outrageous Evel Knievel products at Forces of Geek and as a bonus, you can read an entire Evel Knievel comic book. | ||||||||

| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jimmy Fallon do a QVC skit on The Tonight Show in which the only real aim is to get Schwarzenegger to say the classic line “Get to the Chopper!" from the film Predator. You have to admit, no one does a Schwarzenegger impression like Arnold. | ||||||||
| Beware The Staten Island Clown Posted: 25 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT (Image Via Instagram) (Image Via Instagram) Coulrophobes had better steer clear of Staten Island for a while, until the local authorities take care of a certain creepy clown they’ve got lurking around the city streets. He has become a bit of a local legend in the few short weeks he’s been clowning around the streets of S.I., because people claim he’s an elusive clown, appearing with a wave then disappearing back into the city before most of them can snap a pic. Is this the same clown faced freak that has been haunting Northampton, England, or is this one of the British clown’s disciples? Whatever IT is, if you see the Staten Island clown prepare to laugh your head off! -Via BuzzFeed | ||||||||
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT Many sports teams have given us Star Wars nights as promotions to get new fans into the seats. The Durham Bulls baseball team has done it before, but this year they’re going on further by outfitting the team in new R2-D2 jerseys! I think they should wear these for every game! Star Wars night will be May 4th (Star Wars Day), and the team jerseys will later be auctioned off to benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina. -via With Leather | ||||||||
| Frank Zappa Played The Pope On Ren & Stimpy Posted: 25 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT Once upon a time, way back in 1992, a little cartoon show about a dog and a cat called Ren & Stimpy was making waves with episodes about rubber nipples, a toast headed superhero, and all sorts of gross out gags parents felt were too extreme for kids. But Ren & Stimpy wasn’t really a kiddie show, John Kricfalusi’s seminal animated freakout simply fell victim to the cartoon stigma built by Disney decades earlier, which established the idea that all TV cartoon shows should be made for kids. Proof that Ren & Stimpy was not made for kids lies in the episode where Frank Zappa voiced the Pope, who is rescued by Powdered Toast Man and has to cling on to Toast Man's speedo clad buns as they fly through the air. Boy, they sure don’t make cartoon shows like that anymore! -Via Dangerous Minds | ||||||||
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 09:30 AM PDT Cats have their own business to attend to, and the fact that it may be an inconvenient time or place for humans is of little note. | Bizarre Helmets That Warp Facial Features Posted: 25 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT Helmets are worn to protect the head against flying objects and the elements, occasionally worn to keep a Sith lord alive and show the galaxy that he’s a total badass, but these are not the helmets you’re looking for if you need head protection. These bizarre dome helmets distort facial features in fun ways, helping Korean artist Hyungkoo Lee create some truly unique portraits for a series called The Objectuals, a series where the subjects look like Space Age supervillains or something out of an anime series. Hyungkoo definitely has an affinity for facial feature distortion, with another series called Face Trace you can check out on his site. -Via Hi-Fructose | ||||||||
| Posted: 25 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PDT Cats are not particularly good at chess, but don’t tell them that. They play with such enthusiasm, we’d hate to ruin their enjoyment! The humans in these matches are very forgiving about cats moving pieces the wrong way, taking too many turns, and moving their opponent’s pieces. That’s the price we pay for a friendly game with someone we know and love. -via Tastefully Offensive | ||||||||
| Dinner Time! Enjoy Your Giant Isopods Posted: 25 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT
I hope that you brought your appetites because we're living high on the crustacean tonight! Here are three Bathynomus doederleinii, also known as giant isopods. They typically live in the Western Pacific Ocean off the coasts of Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. They're ocean critters who are usually found from 100-686 meters below the surface of the ocean.
In Japanese, they're called ogusokumushi and are, quite sensibly, food. On March 29-30, an aquarium in Yokohama is offering children the chance to learn about these fascinating creatures, then eat them. They allegedly taste like prawn or crab meat. You can learn more at Rocket News 24.
| Dad Asks Three-Year-Old To List All The Bad Words He Knows Posted: 25 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PDT Toddlers are delightfully innocent, and any rude words that come rolling out of their mouth sound pretty darn funny, especially when they’re trying to prove how grown up they are. Redditor PirbyKuckett asked his three-year-old son to list all the bad words he knows, and the kid’s reply is just what you’d expect from a grown up toddler. You guessed it- butts, lots of butts, and one actual curse word at the end which makes this video awesomely NSFW, but that's what you get when you tell a kid "Tell me all the bad words you know...GO!" -Via 22 Words | ||||||||
