A Terrifying Robot That Will Gyrate Her Way Into Your Nightmares

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Robots can build cars, take a spin on Mars and generally do some pretty cool stuff, but are we already running out of ideas for uses?

You might assume that if you saw this gyrating robot dancer doing her hypnotic hip sway for them and didn’t know the back story, but this scary robo-gal is an art installation created strictly for entertainment purposes by Jordan Wolfson in conjunction with special effects studio Spectral Motion, and not necessarily the next step in robotic evolution.

So maybe she isn't the future of robo-tech, but it looks like Chuck E. Cheese is about to get a sexy new stripper to add to his animatronic band!

10 Fantastically Awful Retro Toys

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 03:00 AM PDT

(Photo: eBay seller scratch-x

This is a great idea! If there’s one thing we need to teach young children, it’s the importance of rooting around medicine cabinets and experimenting. What could possibly go wrong? You’d better look through eBay for a vintage 1950s toy medicine chest. It comes with basic hygiene items, such as soap and toothpaste. But feel free to add prescription drugs and razor blades. Once your kids run out of their own, they know that they can find more in mommy and daddy's medicine cabinet.

This is 1 of 10 weird old toys rounded up at Anorak. You can find the rest here.

Woman Has Her Own Skull Replaced with a 3D Printed Plastic One

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 01:00 AM PDT

(Photo: University Medical Center Utrecht)

A Dutch woman had a rare bone disorder that caused her skull to grow from 1.5 centimeters thick to 5 centimeters thick. Among other problems, this disorder gave her terrible headaches and reduced her eyesight. Eventually, it would kill her. So surgeons led by Dr. Bon Verweij at the University Medical Center Utrecht replaced her skull with a plastic one produced by a 3D printer.

Dr. Verweij had worked with skull implants before, but never as large as this one. The operation was nonetheless tremendously successful. The patient has regained her sight and recovered enough to return to work. You can read more about her case at Wired.

First Episode Of Machinima's New Sci-Fi Web Series ENORMOUS

Posted: 27 Mar 2014 12:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Enormous is a web series with a mighty big name to live up to, and a highly competitive online market full of quality productions to vie against for viewers, but the Machinima and Prime Universe Films production looks like it might live up to its monicker.

Enormous tells a different kind of post apocalyptic tale- the world is overrun by monsters, and the remaining human survivors have to fight for survival or risk becoming a pile of critter crap.

It suffers from the usual first episode problems, namely generic dialog, slow pacing and actors still becoming familiar with their roles, but these problems are sure to be ironed out as the series gathers steam.

Man Robs Shoe Store, Goes to Prison for 15 Years. When Released from Prison, He Immediately Robs the Same Store.

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Either he wanted to get caught or he’s not an original thinker.

In 1999, Christopher Miller robbed a Stride Rite shoe store in Toms River, New Jersey. For that crime and others, the state sent him to prison for 15 years. Last Friday, he was released from prison. According to police, the next day, Miller walked into the same Stride Rite and robbed it again. Police caught him a quarter of a mile away.

LEGO Resume

Leah wanted to stand out from the crowd of job-seekers, so she made a LEGO set of herself (in a limited edition of two). It made plenty of sense for a job in an advertising agency. This Brilliant Invention Helps Disabled Kids Walk and Play

Debby Elnatan's young son, Rotem, has cerebral palsy. He has very limited mobility. She wanted to find a way to help him experience upright movement, so she invented the Upsee. It's a harness that straps a child to the legs and waist of an adult. Both the child and the adult wear sandals that are joined together and slip over their shoes. With the adult's assistance, the child can step, walk, dance and even kick. Both can keep their hands free while doing so.

Elnatan took the Upsee to Leckey, a child accessory manufacturer in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. On Monday, the company released Upsee for global distribution. You can find a promotional video below.

The Real-Life Story That Inspired Up

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 08:00 PM PDT

In 2007, we had a post about Edith Macefield and her refusal to sell her home, even though a high-rise was going up all around her little house in Seattle. Edith died in 2008.

In 2009, we posted a picture of Macefield’s house festooned with balloons as a promotion for the then-new Pixar movie Up. Many speculate that the movie was inspired by Macefield.

You might not know the rest of the story. Who got the house when Macefield died? She willed it to Barry Martin, the construction chief of the project that went up around her house! The two had become good friends during the building controversy. He is making sure that Macefield's legacy lives on. Read the whole story, with pictures, at Buzzfeed.

Artist Turns Corrective Helmets for Babies into Works of Art

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Plagiocephaly is a neonatal disorder popularly known as “baby flat-head.” During gestation, a baby’s skull encounters resistance and grows a flattened surface. One common treatment is to wear a custom helmet that corrects the growth as the child ages.

Perhaps they’re not pretty appliances, but Paula Strawn is here to fix that problem. Over the past 10 years, she’s painted 1,200 helmets with playful and fancy designs, from the works of Van Gogh to super heroes. You can view more here.

43 Cartoon Theme Song Medley

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Ensemble ACJW performs a whole slew of cartoon themes all in one medley. How many do you recognize? There’s a list of them at the YouTube page. I looked through them, and there was only an outside chance of my recognizing six of them, as these cartoons mostly premiered after I became an adult. For the biggest part of the internet population, they will probably bring back some fine memories. They do a very good job of playing them! -via Tastefully Pffensive

Blizzard Artist Gives Disney Movie Stills A Digital Painting Makeover

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Animation has come a long way since the days of classic Disney animated features like 101 Dalmatians and The Sword In The Stone, and now that we use digital art and animation programs to make the whole process easier than ever before these classic films would have a very different look if they were made today.

Tyson Murphy is a lead character artist for Blizzard, and he decided to do a digital painting lighting study by painting over stills from old Disney films.

Tyson's versions look very painterly, and the characters definitely look more realistic, but for my money it's impossible to improve on the perfection of the original backgrounds. Tyson says he's planning to do more of these studies soon, may I suggest a scene from the Black Cauldron?

7 Walking Dead Things You (probably) Didn't Know!

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Cinefix put a TV trivia list into a video so you can enjoy some really gory scenes from The Walking Dead while learning about some of the easter eggs, production notes, and trivia from the series. First, if you don’t regularly watch the series, be warned that the images can be really gross. Second, if you do watch The Walking Dead but aren’t current on season four, this does contain spoilers.

But this video does not address the one thing we all don't know -who is going to kick the bucket in the season finale? At least one main character is killed off at the end of every season so far, and there's no reason to believe this year will be any different.

I did know most of these seven things already, because The Walking Dead is my guilty pleasure and I even participate in discussion forums about it when I have time. That and playing Doge 2048 are pretty much what I do when I’m not blogging. -via Laughing Squid

The iStab is a Folding Knife for an iPhone

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT

There are so many survival tools that you can find on an iPhone, such as a compass, a map, a flashlight, and first aid instructions. But none of these things will let you cut an object. That’s why Instructables member Mike Warren’s invention is so handy. His iStab is an iPhone case that has a built-in folding knife blade. He made this piece of cutting edge technology with a 3D printer and a cheap paring knife.

First, Warren found pre-existing designs for folding knifes and iPhone cases on Thingiverse. He mixed them together in Meshmixer, a 3D design editor. He then used an Objet500 Connex to print the case.

25 Things You Should Know About Life With A Toddler

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT

From the time they take their first steps to the time you send them off on the preschool bus, your life with a toddler is a trip through the looking glass. And just like Alice, you will be confused and confounded by something new every day. If you’ve never been totally in charge of a 2-year-old demon spawn from the pits of hell, you might find this amusing, if a bit incredible. If you’ve actually raised a child through the toddler phase, you will laugh uncontrollably at how spot-on this list really is.

2. THEIR RULES ARE LABYRINTHINE AND INEXPLICABLE

Watching a toddler is like watching an alien creature build some kind of extraterrestrial machine. It’s like watching ritually-peculiar Druid magic, or the interpretive dance of a sentient spam-bot. Our boy-human will put on an Indiana Jones hat and start calling himself “Nemo.” He’ll hand you things and then demand you hold them and if you try to give them back you’ve broken some ancient changeling contract. He’ll require a very particular truck and if you hand him one that is 95% the same truck, he’ll actually hate you — like, maybe literally hate you — for at least two minutes. (Then he’ll forget.) He’ll place things around the room or perform a sequence of events that, for all you know, is meant to unlock some kind of apocalypse. It’s methodical and maddening, like a bird building a nest out of watch parts. Other times? He’s not like that at all.

3. THE WOLVERINE TORNADO

Take a bunch of wolverines. Throw them into a roaring F5 tornado. That’s a toddler. It’ll tear through your home, shrieking and whirling about, scooping things up and depositing them elsewhere. It’ll lose things. It’ll destroy other things. It’ll change direction in the hair’s breadth of a moment — “I’m doing this no now I’m doing this other thing wait what’s that over there.”

Chuck Wendig’s observations as a father include a part about toddlers being “proto-teenagers.” As the parent of several teenagers, I look forward to his analogies when his child reaches that stage of life. And I will laugh then, too. -via Metafilter

Real Life Tetris Art Installations By Michael Johansson

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 09:30 AM PDT

It can be a real pain to fit all of your stuff into a garage, storage space or closet, but thinking of the entire process as nothing but a big game of Tetris might make it easier.

Artist Michael Johansson is really good at playing Tetris in real life, with real life objects you'd find in storage, and his colorful puzzle game inspired art installations show his amazing ability to pack a bunch of junk into spaces of all shapes and sizes.

The objects in his installations fill every inch of space perfectly, and the color arrangement gives the whole arrangement a video game feel.

44 Facts About the U.S. Presidents

One fact for each president -you’ve seen these lists before, even here, but these are different facts from what you’ve heard before. John Green dishes the trivia on all our Commanders-in-Chief in the latest mental_floss video. Who knew John Tyler had 15 kids? Most of us are barely aware that he was a president! You’ll probably learn some things you never knew about other presidents, too.

Smiley Face Screws

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PDT

There are many different screw head types, most of which were developed with some practical goal in mind. Yuma Kano’s design, however, is just for fun. Screw is a collaborative project between him and Komura Seisakusho, a screw factory in Japan. His screws are, he claims, “a product that can bring joy.” I’d bet that’s true if you’re taking something apart and didn’t anticipate one of these beauties appearing.

This could be a clever way to make cash. After all, using smiley face screws would necessitate purchasing bits and drivers that can move them. Kano would do well to make the screws cheap and the screwdrivers expensive.

A Boy Imagines A Day On The Town In This Animated Short - Around

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Around is the kind of animated short that some viewers may find disturbing, not because of mature content or language but because of the squiggly hand drawn animation style.

Around was created by Ryu Kato in 2010, and it's a visionary short full of living motion, lines and otherwise, with a rough illustrative style that comes off as a mixture of Bill Plympton style and the unnervingly twitchy look of Dr. Katz.

The premise is simply "A chain of dizzying images illustrate a day in an imaginary town as seen through the eyes of a boy", but there is a lot more to this short than a simple visionary trip around town.

15 Breathtaking Illustrations Of Fairy Tales From The 1920s

The intricate artworks were elegant and sumptuous and transported us to another world. Buzzfeed has collected a few of those beautiful illustrations for our enjoyment. Aside from looking absolutely stunning and providing unparalleled views of the natural surroundings, this house is also fantastic in the amount of natural light it lets in and the way the walls, made from structural insultated panels, provide a perfect space for the artist to hang up his favorite works.

Construction Worker Trapped by Houston Fire

Posted: 26 Mar 2014 05:30 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Nail-biting time: an apartment building under construction is burning, and a construction worker is trapped on a fourth-floor ledge outside a window, while the flames get closer and closer.

The Houston Fire Department battled the blaze for several hours yesterday. All the construction workers are safe and accounted for. The $50 million, 396-unit apartment complex, which was to be called the Axis Apartments, is a total loss. Here’s a look at the fire from further away.

The fire is believed to have started on the roof, and spread rapidly due to high winds. Read more about the fire at the Houston Chronicle. -via reddit
