| Images Of Bears Doing Human Things Posted: 28 Mar 2014 04:00 AM PDT (Image Via Imgur) (Image Via Kevin Dietrich) There’s a reason they chose a bear to be the star of so many cartoon shows, from Yogi to Baloo to the Three Bears in those Looney Tunes shorts, because very few critters act as humanistic as bears. When a bear stands up and gives you a wave you can almost see your big, hairy uncle doing the same thing, and when they hold a newspaper, sit at a picnic table waiting for a basket full of goodies to come their way, or simply stick their tongue out at the photographer we instantly imagine a friend or family member doing the same thing. Enjoy this selection of images showing Bears Doing Human Things, put together by the animal loving folks at Bored Panda. | ||||||||

| The World's Smallest Sandcastles Are Built on Individual Grains of Sand Posted: 28 Mar 2014 12:00 AM PDT The artist Vik Muniz is always pushing boundaries. We've previously seen his peanut butter and jelly Mona Lisas, his art reproductions made with torn-up magazines and his clown skull. Those projects push the boundaries of materials. But Muniz also pushes out space. He found that as his studio physically expanded, so did his projects. Eventually, he used earth moving equipment to create drawings hundreds of meters across. Now, Muniz is going in the opposite direction. He had explored art at the gargantuan scale and was ready to create it at the microscopic level. So he sketched sandcastles and sent them to Marcelo Coelho, a designer who is skilled in the artistic use of a focused ion beam. With special equipment, Coelho can etch lines 50 nanometers wide. That's about one thousandth of the width of a human hair. You results are beautiful sandcastles on grains of sand. You can read more about the project and see more images at Colossal. -via Lustik | ||||||||
| Posted: 27 Mar 2014 11:00 PM PDT When a firefighter loves a teacher, he just does what he’s gotta do. Justin Deierling and his buddies at the fire department in Greentown, Ohio, arranged for the local school to stage a fire drill. That was his opportunity to propose to Melissa, a teacher at the school, in front of all her students and co-workers. And the firemen had rings for all the kids, too! They got ring pops, and a thrill out of seeing their teacher so happy. See photos from the event at Flickr. -via The Chive | ||||||||
| Little Red Riding Hood Is a Jerk Posted: 27 Mar 2014 10:00 PM PDT Yes, the Big Bad Wolf is the villain of the story, but only because he's just a bit worse than that little brat. She's come all this way just for the pleasure of insulting her own grandmother! Go ahead and eat her. | ||||||||

| Wu-Tang Clan Takes a Novel Approach to Selling Records By Producing Only 1 Copy of an Album Posted: 27 Mar 2014 06:00 PM PDT
Since 1992, the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan has sold millions upon millions of copies of its musical albums. But the way that people access music has changed a lot since 1992, so the group is adapting. It has produced a new album titled Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. Wu-Tang Clan will create only 1 copy of the album.* That's right: just 1.
You will not be able to purchase a CD online or at a physical store. You will not be able to download it online. There's only one copy of the 128-minute, 31-song album. It's in a handmade silver and nickel box in a vault in Morocco. Eventually, the album will be put on display at art exhibitions and music festivals. Later, it'll be up for sale--at a high price. Zach O'Malley Greenburg of Forbes reports:
-via Marginal Revolution *Semantic question: if there's only one physical occurence of the album, then should one say that there are no copies? Doesn't a "copy" imply duplication?
| Mousetrap Chain Reaction in Slow-Motion Posted: 27 Mar 2014 05:00 PM PDT The Slo Mo Guys set up a chain of 150 mousetraps, and set them off manually. Dan doesn’t even have time to withdraw his hands an inch before they all go off! Luckily, only one of them actually trapped him, but that had to be a scary experience. We get to see it in glorious super slo-mo, then in real time, which takes no time at all. -via Viral Viral Videos | ||||||||
| Watch This Bridge Collapse with a Single Touch by an Excavator Posted: 27 Mar 2014 04:00 PM PDT A skilled excavator driver has the hands of a surgeon and the soul of a classical pianist. S/he can do amazing things, like pushing a stalled truck or lighting a cigarette. This video allegedly shows one destroying a bridge in Guangxi Province, China. All it takes is one touch in the right spot. Yes, it's possible that there was some preliminary work done by demolitions experts. But I wouldn't rule out the excavator driver. -via Jalopnik | ||||||||

| Posted: 27 Mar 2014 03:00 PM PDT This is an wonderful way to turn a negative into a positive! Parents get the idea sooner or later that making light of a situation does more long-term good than sympathy. Turning monsters into a cause for celebration goes way back, though. Jim Henson did it for years. Comic by Lunarbaboon. | ||||||||
| A Stomach Churning Series Of Photographs Posted: 27 Mar 2014 02:00 PM PDT The best way to see what lies inside your stomach is to get a scalpel and split yourself wide open, or shrink a ship full of photographers down to the size of a pill and swallow them whole. But the best way to see what your stomach acid will do to anything it comes in contact with is to swallow some film and see what happens. That’s the idea behind “I turn myself inside out” by Luke Evans and Joshua Lake- frames of unexposed film were swallowed then retrieved after digestion (nicest way to put it), then the film was examined under an electron microscope and enlarged images, like the one above, were printed. Here's the idea behind the series from the creators:

| Woman is Launch Pad for Baby Goats Posted: 27 Mar 2014 01:00 PM PDT A woman in a goat pen just wanted to watch and pet the kids. But they discovered she is perfect for climbing and jumping off! We just hope she managed to escape without too many hoof marks. -via Arbroath | ||||||||
| Photographer Captures The Strange World Of Creative Dog Grooming Posted: 27 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT The world of creative dog grooming revolves around color usage, contour shapes, and other design principles that feel right at home in print but are hard to imagine seeing on your pet. Paul Nathan is a fashion photographer who was captivated by the strange beauty of creatively groomed canines, specifically those who compete in a national competition called Intergroom, so he put his pretty pictures of dogs looking rather ridiculous into a book appropriately entitled Groomed. Dogs that have undergone a creative grooming makeover look fine on stage with the other colorful contestants, but they would look completely ridiculous walking around the neighborhood! -Via Beautiful/Decay | ||||||||

| This Elevator Is a Pneumatic Tube That Shoots You Through Your Home Posted: 27 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT
The company that manufactures it, however, would like to stress that it moves slowly and lacks the speed of a pneumatic tube at a drive-through bank or pharmacy. And the company emphasizes this issue as though it is a selling point rather than a disadvantage. Shoot, aside from the inevitable head injuries and broken bones, that sounds like a lot of fun! Dayton Elevator makes elevators, wheelchair lifts, and stairlifts. Their elevators operate through pneumatic pressure rather than pulleys and weights. The company says that, as a result, they're easier to install than conventional elevators. They also make any home look like the set of a 70s era science fiction show. -via Dornob
| Posted: 27 Mar 2014 09:30 AM PDT Christopher Reeves was arrested in Utah for DUI and drug charges. He was wearing a Superman shirt at the time.
Investigators pointed out that Reeves is not related to the late Christopher Reeve, who portrayed Superman in film. He is presumably also not related to George Reeves, who played Superman in the 1950s TV series. The real Superman would not have needed a vehicle to go that fast. -via Arbroath
| Every Spider-Man Ever Will Appear In Upcoming Series Event Posted: 27 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT No other superhero has had as many imitators, incarnations or variations as that wisecracking webhead Spider-Man, and even though it’s hard to keep track of all the men and women who have donned the Spidey suit it’s easy to see why Marvel loves coming up with new versions of their most popular hero. Series writer Dan Slott revealed an upcoming series event called Spider-Verse which will feature “every Spider-Man from every universe” in one big ol’ web slinging bonanza that will start in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man and expand across multiple titles. And what's the best part about this crazy event? Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham will be there!!!! -Via ComicsAlliance | ||||||||
| Posted: 27 Mar 2014 08:30 AM PDT A dog became trapped in a concrete-walled waterway in Romania. We don’t know how long he was there before two men hauled him out, but it was long enough for the dog to realize he was in danger. He readily displays the pure joy of being on dry land and was very appreciative of the rescue. Contrast his reaction to that of the cat in Sweden that was rescued by a sailor from under a boat. Dogs cannot hide their feelings. Cat make it an art. That’s a good dog. | ||||||||
| This Clock Automatically Writes the Time on an Etch A Sketch Posted: 27 Mar 2014 08:00 AM PDT This ingenious clock by Instructables member dodgey99 turns the knobs on an Etch A Sketch to write the time, then flips over to erase the markings and update. First, he adapted a pre-existing body of code that used stepper motors to write random lines on an Etch A Sketch. He carefully rewrote this code so that it would not only compose specific lines, but reset the stylus on an analog device. Then he used pulleys to connect the knobs to a pair of overpowered stepper motors mounted a frame of acrylic sheets. An Arduino electronic controller directs the motors. Check out the impressive result in action: | ||||||||

| North Korean Students Must Get Kim’s Haircut Posted: 27 Mar 2014 07:30 AM PDT
Of course, if all college men are wearing the hairstyle for any length of time, it will develop a new reputation, but in the long run, it will not be a good one. -Thanks, Daniel Kim! Update: According to the Associated Press, the entire story is a hoax.
| PBS Off Book Examines The Rise Of Video Game Economies Posted: 27 Mar 2014 07:00 AM PDT The billion dollar virtual economies created by massively multiplayer online video games are something very few people saw coming in the 80s, when video games were just beginning to hold their own against other popular forms of media. Even more surprising is how fast these virtual economies sprang up, and how people around the world are now making a living farming for loot in video games like World of Warcraft and EVE Online. This episode of the PBS series Off Book focuses on the strange virtual economies created by video games, and how this internal economic snafu has become quite a headache for both the game studios and international law enforcement officials.
