The Secret to Dealing With Change

By Chris HoganWho Moved My Cheese?

As we continue to celebrate Readers Are Leaders month, we asked our own Chris Hogan to discuss one of his favorite nonfiction books. For more book reviews, check out EntreLeadership.com.

If there is one thing I've learned in life, it's that change is never easy. Even good change can be tough to handle while you're going through it. And if I'm being totally transparent, I've even gotten a little whiney about it in the past instead of trying to understand what's going on and taking action.

That's why I always recommend a short little read to every business owner and leader I meet who is struggling with change: Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson. It is a simple little book—less than 100 pages—but it packs a powerful punch.

Quick Tip

EntreLeadership Coaching and Community

To think clearly about business, or anything else for that matter, we have to turn off all of that "white noise" once in a while. And there's a lot of it. Research shows we are hit with more than 3,000 marketing impressions a day. So here's my advice: Get away from all those distractions. Go to the beach, the lake, the mountains or simply the park down the road. Allow yourself some quiet time, so you are able to think about the big issues. Take a pen and a pad or just one book and a highlighter—and nothing else. Unplug and allow your mind the room to think. You'll be amazed how much you get done by occasionally stopping your everyday workflow and getting away.

Erin McAtee
Senior Director of Internet and Technology Development, Business to Consumer Division and daveramsey.com

As a leader, part-time small-business owner and dad to a 4-month old, it's not always easy to schedule time to read. But what I've realized is there is more than one way to learn. You just have to make it work with your lifestyle. Right now, I'm listening to audio books during my morning and afternoon commutes. On my lunch break, I usually carve out 30 minutes of reading on my iPad. I also use the Wunderlist app on my phone. When someone mentions a good book, I immediately put it on my book list. If not, I would simply forget about it. So no matter what method you choose, make the time to read. It's the quickest and, I think, the best way to obtain knowledge that brings value back to your business.
