So the future of the mobile device is to become both an extension of and complementary to the original computing platform. As FierceMobileIT reported last week, there could be as many as 50 million Android smartphones vulnerable to the Heartbleed flaw, which could enable an attacker to steal passwords, personal messages and other sensitive data out of the device's memory. Most of the vulnerable smartphones are running Android 4.1.1 (JellyBean), but some are running 4.22, explains Lookout in a SlideShare presentation. In addition to the HTC smartphones, the Motorola AR TIX HD is one of the most vulnerable devices Lookout estimates that 3.4 percent of Android users in the U.S. are running OpenSSL versions vulnerable to Heartbleed. The security firm explains that Android smartphones are vulnerable through "reverse" Heartbleed. "Most people are talking about Heartbleed, where a malicious client steals data from a vulnerable server. But it works in reverse as well. A malicious server could steal data from a vulnerable client, such as your Android phone." The security firm explains that iOS devices are not vulnerable to Heartbleed because Apple does not ship iOS with OpenSSL. Chris Nerney with CiteWorld blames the high number of devices susceptible to the security flaw on the "disastrously slow" Android update process. Users running the vulnerable Jelly Bean operating system "must rely on an Android partner distribution system that has upgraded KitKat at the scorching pace of 1% of devices per month. It's a terribly inefficient system that not only frustrates and confuses users, but makes IT professionals leery of supporting Android and its seemingly infinite versions." Nerney adds: "Both hardware manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC and major carriers stand between Android updates and users. Any new version of Android must run a gauntlet of customization by handset makers and telcos before being distributed to users, a process that can take months." This might explain why HTC smartphones are the most vulnerable to Heartbleed, according to the Lookout data. To leverage its vast database of user data, Facebook intends to pitch the ad network to publishers and developers at its "F8" developer conference held in San Francisco at the end of April. More than half of Facebook's ad revenue, which totaled $1.24 billion in the fourth quarter of 2013, came from mobile ads. Facebook and Google accounted for a majority of mobile ad market growth last year. The two firms saw net mobile ad revenues increase by $6.92 billion, or 75.2 percent of the additional $9.2 billion that went toward mobile last year, according to the latest stats from e-Marketer "In the past, Facebook stayed away from building out an ad network because it was busy trying to sell ads on its own Web site ... now it can make money from its billion-plus users even when they're not on Facebook's own properties," says Re/code. In January, Facebook said it was trying out ways to sell ads on other firms' apps, "like a mobile ad network," Re/code explains. Facebook will be competing with Google's AdMob mobile ad network, Twitter, which is linking its MoPub ad network to its ad buying platform, and smaller players such as Millennial Media. In 2012, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg undertook a major overhaul of the social networks mobile efforts with a goal of making the firm into a "mobile first" company. The latest mobile move is Facebook's efforts to offer users a mobile payments option. The firm is expected to get an e-money license in Ireland soon that would enable users to exchange money on the social networking site, according to Ovum mobile payment expert Eden Zoller. Mobile payments are "gaining good traction with consumers, particularly in emerging markets where Facebook has ambitions to be the prime platform from which people access, and interact with Internet services," explains Zoller. "We know mobile is critical. Later this year, we are going to hit our mobile moment, where mobile accounts for more than 50 percent of all global traffic," writes Deep Nishar, senior vice president for products and user experience at LinkedIn, in a blog. A majority of LinkedIn members in Costa Rica, Malaysia, Singapore, Sweden, the UAE and the U.K. already access the LinkedIn site using their mobile devices, relates Nishar. LinkedIn just launched a new SlideShare mobile app and redesigned mobile web experience. It is also working on mobile partnerships with Apple, Nokia, Samsung and other mobile vendors. The professional social networking site reached 300 million members last week, Nishar announced. To take advantage of mobility, LinkedIn includes a training program that requires all engineers to take week-long iOS, Android and HTML 5 training courses, explains Mashable. "The primary purpose of that is to just enable a larger and larger portion of our engineering workforce to be able to be mobile-enabled," Kiran Prasad, the senior director of mobile engineering at LinkedIn, tells Mashable. About a quarter of LinkedIn's engineers have completed the training, he adds. For responsive design sites, "the same codebase and associated images are sent to all devices from PCs to mobile phones. It is best to optimize images for mobile devices at the server level, which delivers lighter pages, faster load times and a better user experience," says Ted Verani, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Trilibis.
