Dear Jason, After decades of runaway media consolidation, the Federal Communications Commission today took a critical first step toward tightening its rules and pushing back on big media. This is an important move, with the potential to put more of the public airwaves into the hands of local owners. Help Us Use This Vote to Break Up Big Media. Donate to the Free Press Action Fund. Here's what just happened and what we need to do next. In a 3–2 vote, the agency closed a loophole that has allowed companies like Sinclair, Nexstar and Raycom to evade federal media ownership limits. Now these media giants have to start playing by the rules, and some companies will be forced to sell off stations that violate the FCC’s ownership caps.1 For years we've been collecting evidence of these sneaky deals — and activists like you have been calling on the FCC to act. It worked. We won a big victory today. Help Us Fight for Local Voices. Donate to the Free Press Action Fund. Now we need to ensure that these station divestitures actually help boost media diversity. Here's what we're going to do: • We'll hold companies accountable and monitor every transaction to ensure big broadcasters don't just swap stations. Help Fund the Fight for Media Diversity. Support the Free Press Action Fund. Together our work helped remind folks in Washington that the airwaves belong to the people. We need to take advantage of this momentum to make the most of this win — and to ensure that it results in meaningful changes in the media. Help us fund the next stage of this fight, and we'll help you take back the media. Thanks for helping make this win possible. Josh, Lindsy and the rest of the Free Press Action Fund team P.S. The Free Press Action Fund fights media consolidation each and every day. We don’t take money from business, government or political parties and rely on the generosity of people like you to fuel our work. Please donate $10 (or more!) today. Thank you! P.P.S.
