Dear Friend, Every year, Feeding America conducts the Map the Meal Gap analysis in order to better understand hunger at the county level and provide geographically targeted solutions to feed people in need. The report finds that food insecurity exists in virtually every county and Congressional district in the nation. Other findings include: - Counties with the highest rates of food insecurity are more likely to be found in rural areas than in metropolitan regions.
- While Los Angeles County, California had the highest number of food-insecure individuals (1.6 million), Humphreys County in Mississippi holds the highest food-insecurity rate in the country at 33%.
- Among the fifty states and the District of Columbia, the highest rate of child food insecurity is 29 percent in New Mexico.

The study is supported by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, Nielsen, and the ConAgra Foods Foundation. The lead researcher is Dr. Craig Gundersen, Professor of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois and member of Feeding America’s Technical Advisory Group.  |
