German Man Creates Spider-Man Inspired Laser-Guided Web-Shooters

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 04:00 AM PDT

(Video Link)

Spider-Man's web swinging exploits are legendary among comic book fans and those introduced to the friendly neighborhood superhero by the new movies, so it’s no wonder people want to be like him. Spidey’s most iconic accessory is his signature web blasters, and many people have tried to make their own web slingers to little or no avail.

Patrick Priebe, who Gizmag describes as a “German laser weapons hobbyist”, created a deadly cool, and very functional pair of Spidey inspired web-shooters, only his creation doesn’t shoot webs- it shoots a laser-guided harpoon.

It’s a very useful device for killing and snaring prey from far away, but won’t help Marvel’s wise cracking webhead bag the bad guys…unless the bag in question is a body bag!

My Neighbor Totoro Easter Egg

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 03:00 AM PDT

Swedish artist Roberth Fearon painted an egg to look like Totoro. It's a great idea because Totoro's body is egg-shaped.

But why, dear Totoro, are you wearing your umbrella? It's not raining and the Catbus will be here soon.

Batman Beyond

Posted: 21 Apr 2014 02:00 AM PDT

DC Comics unveiled this new Batman short by Darwyn Cooke at Wondercon. It features the voice of Kevin Conroy and plenty of easter eggs

Like in the series "Batman Beyond," the short takes place in the future, with Bruce Wayne (voiced by Kevin Conroy, who has been portraying Batman for 22 years) semi-retired from being a superhero and his young pal Terry (voiced by Will Friedle, returning to the role for the first time since 2005) taking up the mantle of Batman. As the short begins, Bruce has been attacked by someone looking exactly like his younger self from "Batman: The Animated Series" (1993-95).

Before it’s over, you’ll see many incarnations of Batman as he appeared over his 75-year history. via Gamma Squad

Newborn Kittens Shipped with Cargo

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 11:00 PM PDT

How did two kittens wind up in a box of fiberglass equipment shipped from L.A. to San Diego? No one knows, but they are now getting the best care available. A warehouse worker in Chula Vista opened the box and found two kittens with their umbilical cords still attached. They were taken to the San Diego Humane Society, where they are under veterinary care.

While no one knows for sure how the kitties wound up on the semi, Humane Society Nurse Jenny Bonomini offered a plausible explanation to KGTV: “What we think happened was the mom had the babies and she put them in a safe spot … and she left. Then they got boxed up and they got shipped.”

The kittens, now named Mouse and Wifi, will be placed with a foster home and eventually adopted out.

This Frozen/Game of Thrones Mashup Is So Good It Should Be a Feature-Length Musical

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 10:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

We've seen mashups of the Frozen song "Let It Go" before, but never with such high production values. Loot Crate made this music video for their song "Westeros." Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and Joffrey Baratheon sing about the positive impact they will have on the world by being true to themselves. The lyrics, singing, costuming, and staging are excellent. This could be the starting point of a great musical.

Buffy the Vampire slayer had an excellent musical episode. Game of Thrones should, too!

Cats Are Highly Evolved

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 09:00 PM PDT

Cat Evolution by Coconutman

Cats are pretty cool customers, most kitties like nothing more than to lay around all day dreaming about conquering the human world and taking over salmon factories across the globe. They are so highly evolved that they no longer need to perfect their form, which gives them a lot more time to nap!

Celebrate the evolutionary laziness of felines with this Cat Evolution t-shirt by Coconutman, it's kitteh science and one hundred percent totally true...kinda. Okay, maybe not, but there's no doubt that it's a funny shirt!

Frolicking Llama

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 09:00 PM PDT

This vine of a bouncy llama is fun even with the sound off, but to get the full effect, you need to turn it on to hear the DMX soundtrack. It’s six seconds of silliness from Kirill Beerlove you’ll want to watch over and over! -via Buzzfeed

This Piano Playing Nun Is A Total Drag

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Unless you work in a piano bar, or a department store with its own eleganly dressed tickler of ivories, you’re probably not getting enough piano music in your life. Whether it’s ragtime, smooth jazz, techno or classical, piano music is the key to a healthy musical love life.

The nunny fellow in this video knows the importance of the piano, and its kooky younger cousin the organ, and he’s in the habit of rolling around town sharing his piano-mania with whoever doesn’t run away from him in horror.

He's a man of the cloth about town, and he's about to become the first drag performer to get a DUI while operating a motorized piano!

A Miniature World Inside an Easter Egg

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Jane Smith, a miniature maker, created this incredibly detailed diorama inside a cracked egg. She offers no information about her creative process, but I would hazard a guess that she engaged in some impressive needle felting.

Bonobo Builds a Fire

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Watch a bonobo, a close relative of the chimpanzee, start a fire with a match. Once he builds the fire, he does the natural thing next -he toasts marshmallows! No, this behavior wasn’t observed in the wild; he was taught to do this. But you wouldn’t know how to start a fire and toast marshmallows if your parents hadn’t taught you how, either. See, they aren’t so different from us, really. This clip is from the BBC TV series Monkey Planet, which is apparently about apes, too. -via Viral Viral Videos

The Scariest Inanimate Objects In Movie History

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Inanimate objects have been imbued with a sinister energy thanks to the horror genre, and some of the scariest stories and movies of all time involve characters being terrorized by inanimate objects such as creepy dolls, haunted TV sets and mirrors that trap people’s souls.

Here’s a collection of the most terrifying inanimate objects in movie history, three of which are Stephen King’s creations, and although it’s far from exhaustive the collection of movies chosen for this list would make for a really fun movie marathon!

The Sherpas of Everest

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Friday, an avalanche on Mt. Everest resulted in the death of twelve Sherpas, and three others are missing. The disaster throws a light on the Nepali people who cater to wealthy but inexperienced mountain climbers who pay dearly to say they’ve climbed Everest. The Sherpas do the majority of the work: guiding the way, judging conditions, setting equipment, and ensuring the success of the expeditions. National Geographic photographer Aaron Huey explains what makes the Sherpas risk their lives over and over.

The majority of the Sherpa climbers I talked to don't really want to be doing this business, but when you live in this super-remote mountain valley where there is this highway of money coming through, you go out and risk your life.

Before commercial expeditions, there were only three things: yak, buckwheat, and potatoes. When you can make 30 times as much money carrying loads up icefalls and setting up tents on Everest, you're going to not do the buckwheat. A lot of these guys are just trying to do it long enough to get their kids in a private school in Kathmandu and build a teahouse in their village, where they can retire.

There is a slice of the community that lives to climb and go from mountain to mountain, just like my Western friends who do that, but those guys are in an extreme minority. Most do it because it's the only real business. That's one thing a lot of people don't think about.

On the one hand, the tourism money makes a real difference in the lives of the mountain people. On the other hand, is it worth it when your father, son, or husband doesn’t come home? Read more about the Sherpas at NatGeo News.

This Pool Rocks

This is not a wave pool. This is a regular Olympic pool in Mexico City, recorded by Brandon Ramirez Urzua as a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit Mexico on Friday. Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties or major damage. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the pool when it happened, though. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Vintage Advertisements Get A Pop Music Makeover

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Artist David Redon discovered a fun way to update vintage advertising posters and give them a modern pop culture makeover- he replaced the original subjects with famous musicians.

Redon is the art director for Quai Des Orfevres ad agency in Paris, and the simplicity of each piece as well as the vintage colors are what make his updated posters really work. Snoop Dogg in a gin ad? Fo shizzle.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain selling soft serve? Smells like a winner. But Kanye taking the place of Rosie the Riveter? Now that's what I call taking this musical mashup too far!

Interactive Game of Thrones Map

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

With Google Maps technology, you can now explore the lands of George R.R. Martin’s world from A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones. Check out the map of Westeros and Essos. With a click you can see who owns what lands, or the paths that characters travel. Toggle between “episodes” and “chapters,” depending on whether you’ve read the books or are following the TV show. You can adjust a slide to protect yourself from spoilers, although it may be tempting to peek ahead. There are also plenty of links to more information. Cat Tries to Steal Fish

This cat thinks he’s got it all figured out: just walk over there and take one of those tasty fish hanging from a thin metal rafter. He apparently overestimated either his abilities or the width of the rafter. The entertainment value of the video is slightly improved by the shakiness -that's due to the videographer giggling. -via Tastefully Offensive

These Knockoff Products Seem Totally Legit

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Most people have had a bad experience with knockoff products, thinking it'll be just as good as the original only to find that it just doesn’t live up to the original, and yet people keep buying knockoffs because they're cheap.

Well, you get what you pay for, and when you buy a Skerple instead of a Sharpie you know you’re getting less marker for your money. Even worse- when the product's name asks the consumer to figure out for themselves "Could it be butter?" you're better off paying a few more bucks for the real thing.

You can see more of these hilarious bootleg products in BuzzFeed's 30 Knockoff Products That Are Almost Better Than The Real Thing.

Car Fire in Safari Park

Posted: 20 Apr 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Where would be the absolutely worst place for your car to catch fire? In the lion enclosure of a drive-through safari. And that’s what happened to Helen Clements and her two children when they visited Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, England.

Mrs Clements said she thought her car had overheated when it stopped inside the enclosure.

"Then basically, we thought: 'That's not steam, that's actually smoke'," she told BBC News.

"It was getting thicker and thicker and obviously coming into us, and then we saw flames."

She sounded her horn and both she and George opened their doors, before rangers came running towards them.

"Unfortunately they were shouting to us: 'Get back in the car, do not get out of the car'," she added.

Her son ran out but she called him back and within moments, a ranger had pulled up in a vehicle and got them out of the car.

They could not see the lions at the time as other cars were in front of them.

The lions did not approach, because they are smart enough to know fire when they see it. Still, it was a frightening incident. Rangers moved the lions out of the enclosure before firefighters extinguished the flames. -via Arbroath
